Reid: Foles No. 2 QB; Kafka won't play Thurs.
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Andy Reid confirmed what many Eagles fans had hoped: Nick Foles is his backup quarterback.
"He's in that position right now," Reid said Tuesday.
There are a few qualifiers to Reid's statement. First, Mike Kafka, currently listed second on the depth chart behind Michael Vick, will not play in Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets. So, technically speaking, Foles is the No. 2 because he will start against the Jets.
"Yeah, right now, that's what he is," Reid said, when ask to clarify his original answer. "He's the one that's going to start the game."
Foles will start and play the first quarter, Reid said. Trent Edwards will play the final three quarters.
Kafka "got a little work in" during practice Tuesday, Reid said. But the quarterback's broken left, non-throwing hand was still tender.
"I'm going to hold him out unless something drastically changes," Reid said.
Kafka's future on the team has become cloudy. The Eagles must trim the roster to 53 by Friday. Reid will keep three quarterbacks. Vick and Foles are slam dunks. The final spot will go to either Kafka or Edwards.
Reid was asked if he's seen enough out of Kafka, who took only nine snaps in the preseason.
"I got enough time with him here to make that evaluation," Reid said. "The main thing for him right now is it's just tender right now. He took some snaps yesterday and he could feel them. It's best we hold him out."
Since Vick will be on the IR by game 3, I'd keep all 4 for now. If anyone has to go, please let it be Kafka. He's even worse than Kevin Kolb. fischman
BigdaddyG...you are smoking thai stick laced with acid...book it! tkeagle
With the wide receivers that the Eagles have, they clearly need a QB who can get them the ball. Kafka and his noodle arm clearly is not that guy. Maybe Andy can put him on the PUP list and re-evaluate the QB situation at Week 6, but I doubt he'd do that. He'll want to give Kafka a fair chance to hook on with another team. SteveS11
tkeagle - the thai stick sure beats the hell out of dreaming that the eagles will go anywhere this year !!! bigdaddyG
Why do people keep saying that Kafka will be #3 because he knows the system? Foles and Edwards have been practicing for months, and they both have done better "running the system" than Kafka ever has. As for intelligence, Edwards went to Stanford so he has a good head on his shoulders. watsonmr
let Foles sit this last game out, the Eagles are going to need him this season and we don't need a boat load of desperate amped up defensive ends teeing off on him Thursday night. Just play Edwards the whole game and see if he can with the #3 QB position over Kafka. sedale
Reid always must lie and deceive. When he added "For now" he left Foles and the fans confused. An upstanding straight shooting head coach would have the guts and integrity to put the truth out. This is why fans want Reid's hide. Taser
Reid is waiting for Edwards to stumble against the Jets so he can keep his draft pick Kafka. Having two developmental QB's with a starter that is injury prone, makes no sense to me. Kafka does not have the game experience or the arm to keep on the team. We would be better off this year to go with the game experience of Edwards while developing Foles. OverFiftyYears
we have a new franchise QB in town Nick Foles is ready to play right now he's stays in the pocket gets rid of the ball the line knows where he is,the defense gets plenty of rest with ball controll,he doesn't juke and jive and then get sacked and then blame the O-line he's not a tuirn over machine, big red has a gut check to make if wants to keep his job,,we will never win a superbowl with conVick,,the NFL has 6 rookies starting this season 3 are better then conVick right now Nick Foles would make 4..Nick Foles is a breath of fresh air and plays the game the right way.....wolf. wolf 4
Doesn't matter who the QB is when you have a mediocre OL coach playing DC. Only in Philly...
This is encouraging news. I like his skill set, but more importantly, I like a rookie taking advantage of a situation. We won't know about him until he's under regular season fire, but most definitely he offers hope for the future if Vick doesn't work out. beegal99
Worse comes to worse, can't they PUP kafka and buy 6 weeks time? dlivesay
