Reaction to Vick signing

POSTED: Friday, August 14, 2009, 12:31 AM
One for the dogs.

Here's some reaction from the signing of Michael Vick:

COACH ANDY REID:
"I'm a believer that as long as people go through the right process, they deserve a second chance. He's got great people on his side; there isn't a finer person than Tony Dungy. He's proven he's on the right track."

PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS:
"PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water. You have to wonder what sort of message this sends to young fans who care about animals and don't want them to be harmed."

QUARTERBACK DONOVAN MCNABB:
"I pretty much lobbied to get him here because everybody deserves a second chance. What a better place than to come here with this group that continues to stay together and bond together through times. ... For a guy that has spoken the truth in front of the nation, has served his time, and for a guy who was just looking for an opportunity to kind of get his feet back on the ground. I think he deserves it."

FORMER EAGLES LINEBACKER, FORMER TEAMMATE OF VICK AND CURRENT 610-WIP HOST IKE RESSE:
"It's not going to go over smooth. ... But one thing I know about these fans -- they love this team. Players come and go. Not everybody is a high-character guy. Some guys are going to make you pull your hair out, some guys are distasteful to look at, or what have you, but they love this team. This team remains here after the players leave. Michael Vick is going to be a small part of our lives."

WIDE RECEIVER DESEAN JACKSON:
"Oh man, definitely it is [exciting]. He is a great player. He has a lot to prove to everybody and try to get back on the right track. On the field, he is very explosive. We got some things on this offense now, man."

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED'S PETER KING (via Twitter):
"A fantastic move for Vick. Believe me when I tell you he wanted stability as much as anything, and Reid/Heckert/Banner define stable."

BRIAN BALDINGER, NFL NETWORK:
"When the Eagles signed T.O. that wasn't the most popular thing to do. But that was the best year Donovan McNabb has had as an Eagle and it was the year they went to the Super Bowl (2004). I think Andy recognizes this league is all about integrating the most talent you can. They're just bringing Michael Vick in to create a Wildcat package. They had (second-year wideout) DeSean Jackson running their Wildcat package last year. But he can't throw the ball the way Mike Vick can."

CORNERBACK SHELDON BROWN:
"I think the signing of Vick is great because someone is giving him an opportunity to redeem his career and let his play speak for itself so I have a lot of respect for that."

SAFETY QUINTIN MIKELL:
"He's a great player, a good person, and everybody deserves a second chance. Everybody has been talking about what happened but at the end of the day, he paid his debt. We're going to welcome him here and hope that he can put everything back together by putting the right people around him and love him up."

QUARTERBACK A.J. FEELEY ON HIS PLACE ON THE TEAM NOW:
“I can’t get caught up in that. You can’t control what you can’t control. … I will say that there’s not a guy I trust more in this world than Andy.”

PATRIOTS QB TOM BRADY ON WHETHER HE WAS SURPRISED BY THE MOVE:
"No, he's a really good player."

BENGALS RECEIVER OCHOCINCO (per Twitter):
"Mike Vick and McNabb on the same team, damn!!!!! Glad I don't play defense, good luck game planning to stop that shh!!"

It's crazy that in some societies people can go to jail for killing people and are praised when they get out of jail or praised for not snitching, but this man can't be forgiven. God forgives why can't we?

Hello people. As a business move: The "Philadelphia Eagles" are an NFL franchise in the BUSINESS of providing sports entertainment. I've been an Eagles fan and Philly native since a kid back in the 50s and trust that they know more than I do regarding what's best for the Philadelphia Eagles. On the personal side: You all have the right to express your opinion of Vick for what he did 2 years ago but doesn't everyone deserve a second chance if sincerely remorseful. Vick can't take back what he did but he can change his life and become a positive force for animal rights. I think that we should give the guy a chance to do just that and if it means that some disgruntled fans turn in their season tickets, so be it.

After a child molester serves his time he is still labeled a predator for life. The crime has been paid for but what is inside a man is still inside a man. Those who would prey on the powerless deserve no accolades. Would we give Hitler a second chance? Pol Pot? Sadam Hussein? Now for another reason 2009 can be known as the year Philadelphia lost its Soul.

I wonder how many of the anti-Vick folks continued to support Bill Clinton after his fling with Monica became public? Just curious.

Poor Donovan. With that fragile psyche of his, I expect he will have rearview mirrors attached to his helmet which it will make it easier for him look over his shoulder all year -- that's were Vick will be all year. Prediction - melt down for Donovan by week 6.

Best move the Eagles could make. He will convert all doubters very quickly. Falcon season ticket holder.

Let's stop calling Vick's electrocuting, drowning, hanging, and beating of dogs to make money a "mistake." Can we also stop wtih the 2nd chance nonsense too? He pulled the Ron Mexico stunt, tried to sneak pot on an airplane, and publicly lied and humilated the Falcons team, fans and fron office. The Eagles have always been a team to sign players of high character (TO was a big mouth and an idiot, never got in toruble with the law) and now they sign one of the worst. He doesn't help the team. In fact, with McNabb's insecurity, he may hurt the team. Someone said Vick was more accurate then McNabb. Here are some quick stats. . .Vick never threw for 3,000 yards (only 187 yards per game), never threw for more then 20TDs (never had players? roddy white went for over 1200 yards with Joey Harrington they year Vick left), averages an INT every 33 passes (mcnabb is 1 for every 47), fumbles as much as Kurt Warner, and his career comp % is 53.9 vs. mcnabbs of 58.9. Vick's best year comp % wise is 56.4. Mcnabb only had one year that was lower then that and it was his rookie year. So really, what does Vick do for this team after the negative press, being out of football for two and a half years and will be turning 30 in the near future? What Think Tank thought this was a good idea? The Eagles are one of the favorties to go to the NFC Championship game, again, which they will probably lose, again, and they do this to improve the team? Brilliant! As for Stallworth, the family of the victim AGREED TO THE DEAL. He paid them off, which it another issue. You can not compare him with Vick.

Second chances are for people who make mistakes and for people who are truly sorry. What he did wasn't a mistake, it was evil. And he is only sorry he got caught. The only thing people seem to want to comment on is how this will effect their offense. Just goes to show you that the NFL is all about the $$$ and has no moral compass whatsoever. They spew this 'second chance' B.S. as a rationalisation. Are any of you actually naive enough to think he is sorry for what he did to the dogs?

I am deeply disappointed with the Eagles decision. I have always felt that they have been a classy organization. This is going to go horribly wrong for them; I think they have vastly underestimated how badly this move is going to be received, both in Philly, and every single place the Eagles play. The NFL would have been a lot better off having waited a year to reinstate Vick, see if he can stay out of trouble, and have him spend a lot more time gaining some type of respect. This isn't going to end well for the Eagles. Mark my words, Vick WILL inevitably disappoint and disgust Eagles fans. Only a matter of time.

Mike Vick, as any person who served his sentence, is allowed to work in his given vocation. Just because an athlete is paid $1M shouldn't be considered unfathomable. Where is the consistent ethic of life? Why aren't we as sanctimonious when violence is the norm in Phila?

Let's see, second chance, if you worked for a bank and were convicted of embezzlement would that bank hire you back.........why not you should get a second chance right? Or better yet, if you were convicted of the same crime that Vic was, would ...your present employer hire you back, let’s say if you were a policeman, a nurse or a lawyer at a prominent firm.....hmmm.Read More
