New day, same answers from Reid

Andy Reid and the Eagles are 1-4, marking their worst start since Reid's first season. (David Maialetti/Staff Photographer)

How would you grade prized free-agent acquisition Nnamdi Asomugha after five games?
A. Excellent
B. Good
C. Fair
D. Poor
F. Failing

Facing a 1-4 record and a firestorm of criticism from local and national media, fans and -- most damagingly -- opposing players, Andy Reid had little new to offer today in the way of explaining how he plans to turn around a season nearly over after just five games.

Reid said Juan Castillo would remain the team's defensive coordinator, saying the defense improved in the second half Sunday. He said the "wide-nine" front that has been gashed all season will remain in place (even after the Bills boasted about how they knew they could exploit the system with runs and shovel passes). The system puts tremendous pressure on linebackers and safeties, the weakest part of this roster, but Reid again cited second half improvements Sunday, declining to say what changes were made other than to say that the defense tackled better.

He was asked about the defense, about correcting the team's turnovers and penalties, and answered all with the normal coach speak: fundamentals, hard work, keep plugging away.

"We’ve gotta keep working is what we need to do and make sure we're putting guys in the right position," Reid said.

"The players are listening. We've just got to continue to work our fundamentals and do the right things in practice," he said at another point.

"It’s my football team. I've got to get it right and we'll do this thing as a football team," he said later.

At one point Reid was asked about a criticism from Sports Illustrated NFL writer Peter King, who called the Eagles sloppy and dumb in his Monday Morning Quarterback column today. King has often praised Reid, so his analysis shows just how much standing the coach has lost in just the past four weeks.

"Everybody will have their opinion," Reid said. "Listen, it's America, everybody can do that."

Reid said he did not have any lineup changes to announce today -- but he specified "today," signaling that some shake up is likely on the way when the team gets back together Wednesday.

It doesn't sound like he will be getting help from either Trent Cole or Jason Peters this week. Reid said it would be "a stretch" for either of them to play Sunday against the Redskins.

The Redskins were smiling upon hearing that no defensive changes will be made. The way the db's and linebackers tackle, expect another 150 yds running against the Birds.

I'm no totally opposed to the "Wide 9" formation. But maybe mroe so on passing downs instead of all the time. The sign of a good coach is one that can adapt and change his team to correct issues. I am not seeing much of that this season. It's disheartening.

"The players are listening. We've just got to continue to work our fundamentals and do the right things in practice," he said at another point.

I guess that's better than a strident "I have NOT lost this team."

Andy Reid obviously has no respect for the defensive side of the ball if he thinks he can just plug in a guy that's never coached defense and actually win games. I guess Reid has the same opinion of defensive coordinators that he has of linebackers, and he's been proven wrong on both.

If that second round pick from Temple can't beat out these safeties he will never make it in the NFL. Give him a shot and cut Page now. Also send a message and bench Asante until he agrees to get tough and participate in the tackling (and wrap up).

Eagles- see you next year, maybe, but only if you make many changes.

Free agency and the lockout screwed this season up royally and made the Eagles' many weaknesses (that everybody except those running the team recognize) even more salient

I'm turning my football attention westward, to the Steelers and the Mountaineers.

    Time's yours....

Andy Reid stated that he 1) will take full responsibility 2) put his players in place to make the plays and 3) will work harder. Are these statements from his press conference 13 years ago, his press conference 8 years ago, today's press conference or all of the above?

Reid has to go, and firing him in mid-season will not hurt either
because this team is going nowhere fast. Get rid of him, then plan for the future: bring in an established SB winner like Gruden, no more
Lurie "I'm smarter than the rest of the league" low budget junk pile coaches like Reid was back in 99. If we had gotten a Gruden or
Vermeil type coach that actually UNDERSTANDS NFL balance gives you
the only chance at a title, we might have had our Eagle parade down
Broad Street already? It's also time the media calls Lurie to task, he keeps talking about operating correctly like his boyhood idols the Red Sox or the Celtics, he forgets they have what over 10 world titles between them??? How many titles does the Lurie's 20 year tenure have???

OK, so Reid doesn't want to believe his own eyes and he won't listen to local & national media and the fan base, I get that. Now he hears players from teams the Eagles have played, openly mocking his strategy (Wide 9), and the players manhood (Quitting) and the guy is OK with keeping the status quo? That Reid is one stubborn mule!

All I hear about is Gruden/Cowher/Fisher. Has anyone in the media approached them as to whether they'd even consider it? Of course they would respectfully decline to answer but what makes everyone assume they want to wade into this mess? Again, in my 45 years of being around football, I have never heard another coach say, "linebacker is not a priority position in this scheme." Scheme indeed.

Most people don't like Gruden or Cowher as coach, how about making
Childress the head coach and Jim Mora Jr the Def coordinator???

I means say what you want, Childress, outside of Tavarius Jackson
at QB, assembled some very good talent on offense and defense both
through GREAT drafting and bringing in good FAs with the exception
of back stabbing old pervert Favre(that co$t him his job)!!

Arrogance always wins when it comes to Andy. He will never admit a mistake, whether it be the Wide 9, Castillo, or anything else. He'd rather lose than face up to himself as a man and admit he failed and his ideas were intellectually inferior.

More Andy tries, more complicated his plans become. Players could be brain-tired with too much scheming. By preparing each week for thousand minute things, he's just overloading them and himself. Simple stupid and obvious for good reason. Too smart for his own good. Two more cliches Andy could use during his press conference.

Backers have had no importance IN Andy schemes --PASS HAPPY Reid continues to be pass happy MAKING IT REALLY DIFFICULT FOR DC TO SCHEME AGAINST OUR EAGLES..NOT!!!!
ANDY IS DEMONSTRATING NOT ONLY HIS INCOMPETENCE BUT ALSO HIS HUGE EGO

Listen Reid is who is he. He never gave us an identity on our offense...he had a few skilled players thru the years and he'd let them carry them...he never helped them in any way. McNabb was never given a true running game that defenses had to worry about. The only identity we had was on our D, that was until JJ passed away. Now our Defense is just a shell of what they used to stand for.

the media gets the same answers because they ask the same questions.
Reid will not openly criticize his players or his coaches. Yet the questions are always in that direction. Did anyone ask why no FG attempt at end of 2nd half ? Did anyone ask why he used last time out
when the Bills sent offense back on the field and got that offsides penalty ?

The season is over. The team is in disarray. Defense sucks. Reid sucks. He coaches like this is his rookie year. The media fears Reid. Why, I'm not sure, is it Reid's arrogance that intimidates them or is it Reid's huge ego.
Whatever, it is time for him to go. The question that the media needs to ask is, Mr Lurie will you fire the Fire Plug. Nothing short of getting rid of Reid will be the start of bringing in a smart coach. Every coach in the league knows the plays we run, oh excuse me, pass.
REID MUST GO. REID MUST GO. REID MUST GO. REID MUST GO. REID MUST GO.

I'm surprised at all this criticsm of Andy Reid. Don't you guys know he's always right? Who else could make a DC out of an O-line coach? He just has to put Juan in a better position. Don't you know running back is just another name for pass receiver? When we go to the Super Bowl I don't want all you critics jumping on the bandwagon.

The problem to me looks like we bought a shut down cover Cornerback and asked him to pay a zone defense. He can intercept ball, bat balls down but he sit not an open field tackler. he is not a strong/free safety. we havent had one of those since Brian Dawkins and Micheal Lewis.
