With Donovan McNabb off until the Eagles hold their next full-squad camp next month, Kevin Kolb is the team's top quarterback this week and next at these rookie camps that also include some selected veterans.

After the Eagles went through their paces Wednesday, Kolb, beginning his third season in Philadelphia, drew a crowd of reporters and offered some honest opinions about his status as the No. 2 quarterback on the roster.

Apparently it was a slow news day because some people thought it was earth-shattering news when Kolb confessed to being "a little bit antsy" about becoming the Eagles' full-time No. 1 quarterback.

"I want to develop as a player and I want to be a starter in this league," Kolb said. "I want to be a star in this game."

That's not news and it's also not any different than what he said two months ago when I talked to him at Tra Thomas' charity golf tournament in Deland, Fla. Kolb, a second-round pick in 2007, thinks he can be a successful NFL quarterback even though he has thrown four interceptions to no touchdowns in his limited playing time.

Kolb, by the way, has looked better this spring than at any time during his tenure with the Eagles. He had a sensational connection with rookie Jeremy Maclin on a deep pass during this morning's workout. But Kolb knows completions in these camps are nothing more than training. It's important, but he wants more.

Call me when Kolb stands in front of the cameras, microphones and notebooks and says, "You know, I'm really not sure I'm qualified to be an NFL starter." That would be a huge story.

For now, it's good news that Kolb thinks he's capable of doing the job that still belongs to McNabb.

Kolb has shown zero ability to be a starter in any action he's gotten in both the regular season and the preseason. If the guy thinks he can be a star, he better be lighting up the second teamers in preseason. He hasn't. Just another stiff from Houston.

once again 5isaking says a dumb thing... Kolb hasnt had a chance and wont for at least a year... Aaron Rodgers was never good in relief of Farve (when game was out of reach) and Rivers was horrible when he came in for Brees. Kolb will be a solid starter once he plays on a regular basis.

AR was willing to keep McNabb on the bench for learning even though it meant starting Doug Pederson. He's surely going to be willing to park Kolb behind McNabb. Maybe if they get 30 points up on a weak sister he'll get some time this season, but we need every W we can get for home-field, why would he mess around?

Reality Speaks
to sum things up - McNabb is the starting QB for the Eagles. Kolb is the backup who wants to be a starter someday(maybe, maybe not). and lonelywolf is getting more delusional by the day...ya'll ain't saying nothing new.
About Birds' Eye View Blog

Bob Brookover, left, is in his seventh year of covering the Philadelphia Eagles after spending 15 years covering the Philadelphia Phillies for the Inquirer and two other newspapers. The 45-year-old Brookover lives in Delran with his wife Francine and roots for Notre Dame and Michigan State, the two schools attended by his children, Justine and Ryan. When Notre Dame plays Michigan State, he cheers for the school of the child he likes more at that particular moment.

Jeff McLane, right, joined the Eagles beat in April 2009 after two years of covering colleges, namely Penn State football. Before that he covered high school sports for The Inquirer. Before that he worked in the mailroom (not quite). Informed that his father is no longer covering the Lions, McLane's eldest, three-year-old son said, "You mean Simba, Scar and Mufasa, Daddy?" His two-year-old son -- excited about the move to the Eagles -- said, "Go, Deigo, Go!" or something like that. His wife of five-plus years, however, had a different take on the new job. "Another five years is in question," she said. Check out McLane on Twitter and Facebook for instant updates on the Eagles.
