Michael Vick confirms he has a dog

POSTED: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 4:29 PM

A day after declining to answer whether he owned a dog, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick released a statement Thursday confirming that his family had recently obtained one.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement released by his publicist. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.

“I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”
Last week, Vick tweeted a photograph of him and his daughter seated together at a table presumably at home. To their right was an open box of Milk-Bone dog biscuits. The tweet was later deleted and was replaced by a similar photo, sans the Milk-Bone box.

Several days later, the Eagles quarterback was asked to explain the photos.

“I’m here to strictly talk about football,” Vick said Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex. “What goes on in my personal life is not to be talked about. What’s most important right now is the Philadelphia Eagles and getting the win Sunday.”

Vick could not own a dog during a three-year probationary period following his release from prison. He served 19 months for owning and operating a dogfighting ring and an additional two months of house arrest following his release in May.

He had spoken openly about wanting to own a dog and in July told CNN’s Piers Morgan that he did not want to deprive his daughters from having the pet because of his crimes. Asked what kind of dog he would get, Vick said that he would allow his children to choose, but “it certainly won’t be a pit bull.”

Besides being a conVick, he once again proves his stupidity. Why would he invite this debate around him when he should be focused on becoming a respectable QB. Just what you would expect from him though.

Not an issue with me; good to see him trying to be a good father, which is the most important role he will have in his life.

Let him have the dog. Let him learn to care for one. Let his children learn to care for one. When a man abuses his wife or girlfriend, he's allowed to sleep with them again or with other women. Who cares what Vick does as long as he's following the law and doing things right. Everyone wants to judge.

Did Vick adopt the dog from a shelter? If not, why not.

just that this story exists exemplifies where journalism has gone...down the trash chute of gossip. That's all. Are we that bored? Is life this meaningless? Phew. Do journalists have any respect for themselves anymore. Give me the good ol days when I watched and enjoyed football games without 24 hour news dissecting all the athletes. Hey folks. They're jocks. They have talent. They're flawed. So was Elvis. I just loved his music.

The only intelligent comment made here is worth repeating: "But I think Vick should be thinking a little further than he apparently has. Someday, maybe very soon, his children are going to find out, either from schoolmates or the Internet, what their father did to dogs...This includes the beatings, drownings, electrocutions...When his kids look at their family pet, what are they going to think of Michael doing those things to dogs? To me, his message should be that your father did some really rotten things to dogs...and actions have consequences..one is which I'm not going to bring a dog into this household.

The president of the Humane Society said it would be okay by him for Vick to own a dog.
