Michael Vick confirms he has a dog

POSTED: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 4:29 PM

A day after declining to answer whether he owned a dog, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick released a statement Thursday confirming that his family had recently obtained one.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement released by his publicist. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.

“I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”
Last week, Vick tweeted a photograph of him and his daughter seated together at a table presumably at home. To their right was an open box of Milk-Bone dog biscuits. The tweet was later deleted and was replaced by a similar photo, sans the Milk-Bone box.

Several days later, the Eagles quarterback was asked to explain the photos.

“I’m here to strictly talk about football,” Vick said Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex. “What goes on in my personal life is not to be talked about. What’s most important right now is the Philadelphia Eagles and getting the win Sunday.”

Vick could not own a dog during a three-year probationary period following his release from prison. He served 19 months for owning and operating a dogfighting ring and an additional two months of house arrest following his release in May.

He had spoken openly about wanting to own a dog and in July told CNN’s Piers Morgan that he did not want to deprive his daughters from having the pet because of his crimes. Asked what kind of dog he would get, Vick said that he would allow his children to choose, but “it certainly won’t be a pit bull.”

Dog owner for 15 years total, Eagles season ticket holder for 27 years. Asked and answered, why anyone really cares at this point is beyond me. Move on to create the next controversy.

The man has INCREDIBLY POOR JUDGEMENT. Still, I thought his statement was eloquent and tounched all the public relations bases. Sounded just like him, did it not?

Paul Ryan is getting a dog tonight. He will name it Biden. So to recap, Paul Ryan will own a dog named Biden tonight.

As for Michael Vick, get a leash for the football.

The statement never mentions 'dog' only 'pet' - maybe the milkbones were for a turtle

“As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals."

Isn't he a wonderful dad? He just married his kid's momma a few months ago - what was he teaching his children there ? Daddy has got 3 kids but he's not ready to settle down yet ?

I am sure his fellow Eagles will vote Mike some type of father of the year award. What a great guy.

Milk Bones aside. Vick is still a piece of pond scum, a bottom feeder and should have been banned from ever owning animals again. And he should have been banned for life from playing football. But alas, football has many felons, just like Congress.

Mike - if the puppy needs to go to the vet - let your kids carry it. Don't need you fumbling the poor thing on its head.....

Raul Ibanez hit two homers last night for the Yankees.
Tied it with the first home run in the 9th then won the game in the 11th with his second.
We've had some great athletes here in Philadelphia over the years, Con Vick isn't one of them.

This killer is a psychopath....he doesn't deserve to be near dogs! Anyone who wears a #7 shirt should be ashamed of yourself for admiring a dog killer! You people are just morons!

I have a number of issues with this story. First, wasn't Vick told he couldn't have a dog? Second, the fact that Vick evaded the questions shows that his character is still in the gutter. Third, deleting a picture that showed a box of dog biscuits proves he was trying to pull one over on people and finally, who the heck actually thinks the words in that statement belong to Vick? It would take the guy a month to write a coherent paragraph.
