McNabb to 49ers unlikely

POSTED: Thursday, February 25, 2010, 10:47 AM

INDIANAPOLIS -- You can check off the San Francisco 49ers as potential suitors for one of the Eagles' trio of quarterbacks -- maybe.

San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary pronounced Alex Smith as his starting quarterback for next season, with one caveat.

"I feel a great deal about saying Alex Smith is our starter going into the next football season," Singletary said during the first day of the NFL scouting combine. "The thing for me is I'm always going to use words like, 'probably' because I like competition. I like guys knowing that we're always going to compete. But I feel very comfortable in saying Alex Smith is our starting quarterback."

Singletary was most likely referring to his own stable of quarterbacks with Nate Davis and Shaun Davis in the mix with Smith when he spoke of competition.

The 49ers have been rumored to be one of the teams that has called the Eagles about a possible deal for Donovan McNabb. San Francisco general manager Scot McCloughan said the he hasn't spoken to the Eagles.

Of course, that doesn't mean he won't. McCloughan and Eagles coach Andy Reid worked in Green Bay together, after all.

"I'll talk to any team about anything -- trading picks, trading players," McCloughan said. "The thing you got to be careful with when you're talking about how to improve at quarterback in the NFL is how that affects you re-signing your own guys."

McNabb, by the way, received another affirmation that he was the Eagles' starting quarterback next season when Reid referenced the veteran being back for another season on Tuesday.

Buffalo, meanwhile, has been a popular choice as the likely landing spot for Michael Vick. New Bills coach Chan Gailey sidestepped any questions about upgrading his quarterback situation, though.

"Every team in the league that doesn't have an All-Pro or somebody that got votes for All-Pro is looking to improve their position," Gailey said.

Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick split duties under center for the 6-10 Bills last season.

Asked specifically if he needed to bring in another veteran quarterback, Gailey said, 'If that's the best way to improve [the team] then I'll do that."

The Eagles are approaching a March 5 deadline when it comes to Vick. They have an option for next season and may have to eat a $1.5 million bonus instead of releasing Vick if they want to trade him and get something in return.

Geez, I feel much more comfortable with McNabb, Kolb and Vick as QBs than I would with this trio of Stooges. Sometimes we don't know how lucky we really are. Can you image facing the season with this group? They will get Singletary fired.

Another McNabb apologist citing the defense. Well, it's not all McNabb's fault but he's in it deep. Spraying the ball all over the place. Getting passes tipped at the line more than any other starter in the NFL? Does the Eagles defense run into the field and make him throw the ball into the ground or behind receivers? The QB is the most important player on the team, and he has been a major disappointment.

trade vick and 3 for DOnte Whitner and send McNabb to AZ for Boldin and a 2nd. Use the picks for tough RB in round two and extra Safety in round 3.

Im with Panthro. No one on this team except Jackson played so well last year that I wouldn't say goodbye for the right price. McNabb was great. His act is tired. The welcome is worn out. Bye.

I have a dream (Martin L.K.), yes I've had a dream--that "BOZO" and "KILLER" don't let the door hit them in the A## on the way out.

hrlevine speaks truth. I'm down here in Miami watching "The Chads"...Pennington and Henne. Parcells wants us to believe that Henne is the guy. We'll take DM down here in a heartbeat!

McNabb will be the next one going. Eagles need another R.B. to replace BWest. Chester Taylor, Vikings will be in the trade to the Eagles plus draft choices for McNabb. The only holdup is Favre returning. If Brett Favre returns, then it's on to Arizona.

It would be nice for Eagles fans if they had a QB that made the defense better not Senor 3-and-out with the occasional quick strike. All defenses are up against it in the NFL today. You don't have a chance if your QB can't sustain a drive. Anybody see the Super Bowl? Very few possessions because both team's offenses were the best defense.
