A desert opening for McNabb?

POSTED: Friday, January 29, 2010, 1:14 PM

With Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner expected to announce his retirement this afternoon, Donovan McNabb fielded questions about the man who twice beat the Eagles in an NFC championship game.

"Kurt and I have been friends pretty much since the year 2001 when we played in the NFC championship against each other," McNabb said. "We've communicated back and forth and I actually talked to him after his last game against New Orleans. I told him it has been a storybook career for him."

Of course, Warner's decision to retire enhances the McNabb offseason story.

Could the Eagles' longtime quarterback end up being traded to Arizona, the place where he keeps an offseason home.

"Will you stop it," McNabb said when the subject was raised after the NFC's Pro Bowl practice this morning in Fort Lauderdale.

These things, of course, will not stop any time soon regardless of what Eagles coach Andy Reid said the day after the season.

"Everything is going to come up that involves me," McNabb said. "It seems like every offseason involves Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb, so we're going to hear about that the whole offseason. So get ready: Is Brett retiring? What's he going to do? And in Philly Donovan McNabb ... so get ready for that. But I don't get involved in all that."

McNabb wouldn't even acknowledge that if he is traded that he'd like to go to a team with a chance to win the Super Bowl. Minnesota and Arizona would both seem to have a chance to do so with McNabb.

"We can win in Philly," McNabb said. "There's a place I want to be. It's the NovaCare Center. That's in Philadelphia. One NovaCare Way, where the Eagles practice and then they eat cafeteria food and they watch film and we eat and we have fun."

McNabb also talked about the Eagles' decision to name Howie Roseman the general manager and the changes in the scouting department since the departure of former GM Tom Heckert.

"One thing people fail to realize is that Andy makes the decision over there," McNabb said. "With Howie stepping in, it's going to be the same pace and the same beat. With Andy and Joe and Howie now and everyone else in the scouting department, it's still going to flow as well as it did."

It will be interesting to see if the Eagles take less in a trade to send him to an AFC team. I hope they do that. There are AFC teams that need a QB. I would love it if they send him to the Raiders for a 3rd rounder.

I'd love for the Eagles to keep him and win a Super Bowl.

The only way this team wins with McNabb is to balance running and passing, getting a true #1 receiver, a consistent O-line, and a significant upgrade at safety, LB, and DE pass rusher.

Get rid of McNabb! He had his shot in Philadelphia and it is time for some new blood. There is plenty of young talent out there that just need a shot. I like him, but his play has been questionable.

soulman, 5 is worth way more than a 3rd round draft pick, especially if you are talking Oakland. Crazy Al and Oakland traded a 1st for 1 year of an aging Richard Seymour last year, we could get 3 1st rounders from Oaklnad for 5.

McNabb has NEVER been the problem! You can win a SB even without a franchise QB as long you have good offensive and defensive lines. The Eagles have unsuccessfully drafted lineman. They're trying, but the lineman don't seem to pan out. This year we need a 1st round defensive lineman or linebacker. We should pick up offensive lineman in free agency since our learning window is too small.

Maybe we need new lineman coaches? Whatever just win baby.

psuwelsh, spot on. Other than that, they're fine. Watches, the lines have not been the problem - other than this year. McNabb usually has ridiculously long times to throw but since everyone typically plays a full-time nickel or pass defense against the Birds (no run threat) nobody is open.

Wow psuwelsh, you don't consider D. Jackson with a pro-bowl in his 2nd year and various records under his belt a "true #1"??!? The offensive line has been tremendous the past decade, until injuries (who can plan for that?) ravaged it, and the the linebacking corps as well (the LBs looked to be special before Bradley went down, injuries will F up any team.) A DE to complement Cole would be extremely welcome.

Mcnabb has more talent that 90 percent of the qbs in the nfl, every qbs success and failure is predicated on scheme and the offensive line.Unfortunatly Mcnabb has never had both at that the same time except once and that ended in a super bowl he should have won

Maybe McNabb should eat less and work harder when he is at One NovaCare Way, just sayin'.

Stop, already! Enough! The local media is beginning to look stupid with their never-ending quest to drive McNabb out of town. How about trying some old fashioned journalism and report something when it happens. And stop with the tiresome, ridiculous speculation. Leave the buffoonery to the talk radio clowns.

The Donovan hate is ridiculous. He's the best QB in Eagles history, he'll be in the Hall of Fame. Yes he sometimes throws the ball low but he does it in lieu of getting picked. Look at the guy's TD to INT ratio. He throws up and everybody calls him soft. He's the same guy that played on a broken leg. No we haven't won a Super Bowl with him - but can we blame that entirely on him? When Dawkins was here, nobody was saying... yeah he's good but he's had his chance and we didn't win the big one. Be careful what you wish for. He's a 1st round pick and a HOF QB.... the alternative is a late 2nd rounder out of U of Houston or a guy that just got out of jail.
