options

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said during a South Beach appearance on ESPN SportsCenter tonight that he hopes teammate Michael Vick gets a chance to play elsewhere next season.
“I don’t know what particular team,” McNabb said. “I just hope he has an opportunity to be a starter for another team. I think he definitely deserves that and he has done a great job of getting himself together and preparing himself for this opportunity and I think he is going to flourish in it.”
The Eagles have an $1.25 million option on Vick’s 2010 contract. If they do not exercise that option by March 5, Vick will be an unrestricted free agent. The Eagles would no doubt love to trade Vick for a draft pick, but it remains to be seen if they can find a suitor.
McNabb also reiterated that he plans to be back with the Eagles next season.
“Green and white,” was his answer to the question about where he’d be in 2010 and he didn’t mean the New York Jets. “This was a year where we continued to improve and taken another step. We have a lot of talent around us and … hopefully we’ll find ourselves in this (Super Bowl) game next year.”
The Eagles’ quarterback also said he expects Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts to beat the New Orleans Saints by 17 points in Super Bowl XLIV.
An attempt to talk to McNabb after the SportsCenter segment was unsuccessful because he was quickly whisked off in a private car provided by ESPN.

Eagles hire Savage

Phil Savage, the former general manager of the Cleveland Browns, joined the Eagles’ player personnel department yesterday as a consultant.
“I’ve always admired the work Phil Savage has done,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “After spending time with him this past year, I realized how well we could work together. Phil is an excellent talent evaluator and having an extra set of eyes for us to utilize will definitely help our scouting staff as we prepare for the draft. He’s spent time working on the draft class already, so … I thought it was a slam dunk when the opportunity was there for us to add him to our staff.”
Savage, 44, held the title of senior vice president and general manager from 2005 through 2008 with the Browns, who were 24-40 in that stretch. Savage spent last season as a color analyst for the University of Alabama’s football games.
“This is a great opportunity for me to get back in the NFL,” Savage said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity for me to get back in the NFL. I’m really excited about the role the Eagles have afforded and I’m ready to help Howie and the rest of their scouting staff in the best way I possibly can.”
Before joining the Browns, Savage spent nine seasons with Baltimore, working as the director of college scouting and the director of player personnel.

Only 1.25 million. Interesting. They may not be interested in trading him after all.

    $1.25MM for a 2nd or two 3rd round picks....this is a bargain...they wasted $1MM for 20 plays all season.

He also had a lot of input in the Baltimore organization before that and that's where he really got his reputation as a good talent evaluator. I understand the concerns with Cleveland, but they've been broken for along time. Can't put that all on him, some of it, but there's a lot of blame to go around when you talk about bad situations like that. He's going to be a player personal consultant, which is more of what he excels at. Good pick up.

    It's a 5.25 million option with a 1.25 million roster bonus.

Sound like McNabb is giving Vick a gentle push out the door.

I keep reading these articles and WOW, McNabb believes the way he performs we will go to the Super Bowl next year. WOW, can someone be serious just once. NFC super bowl wins in 44 years. Dallas 5, Washington 3, NY Giants 3, Eagles 0, yes thats ZERO. Give me a break.

Dmac is sweating his job. Kolb/Vick scenario scares him. All the Eagles are doing is waiting for the right offer.

Revuegene- Same thing I was thinking- nice having you around, but time to get the heck out...Here, let me open the door for you Mr. Vick, come back real soon.... as the starting QB for the Lions or Browns....And yes, Drew77, the Kolb/Vick scenario DOES make him nervous....Big Red will NOT trade Kolb- take it to the bank...

#5 is really a strange cat. since when does getting whacked in the wild card round represent an improvement, a step forward?!? the guy lives a polyanna world. here's hoping he gets to take his tired act to a new team next year. best wishes, and all that, but enough already! and that option for vick in 2010, as HandNik pointed, is for $5.2 million, so keeping him would be silly. he was terrible for atlanta in a west coast offense. trade him, if you can, or cut him. trade mcnabb for whatever is the highest draft choice you can get. go with kolb! get a.j. back or sign jeff as your #2, or find someone else to be #2 behind kolb, but please trade mcnabb and vick! we have six choices in the first four rounds. add a couple more, and we could really modernize the roster this spring.

The 5.2 Mil would be his salary if he's still on the team next season not any option. The 1.25M is what he's due by Mar5 to stay on the roster. If the Eagles pay him, they still have the ability to try to make a trade. Come April, some team(s) will ask about Vick. If the offer makes sense, the Eagles can pick up some picks and/or work out a trade for a need (LB, DE, etc). If not then, come training camp time, there'll be a few teams not satisfied with their QB & maybe work something out for next years draft. IMHO, the Eagles should pick up the option.

The Eagles took a step up in terms of regular season record, and offensive numbers. I'm sure DM pictures a much better O line this year, and D-Jack, Maclin, McCoy and Celek with naother year under their belts, etc. And, a Bradley-led D with an improved lb corp and secondary, with a second-year coordinator. Well, it does look promising for next year.

Mcnabb is lacking one thing, and thats a heart. He doesnt have that killer instinct, that thing that puts him at his best when the games on the line. Thats one thing i can say Vick has over him, Vick has put the team on his shoulders and has won, Mcnabb has choked year after year. In the famous words of Denny Green "He is who we that he was"
