McNabb doubtful for Sunday

POSTED: Sunday, September 13, 2009, 5:35 PM

Who was the player of the game in the Eagles’ opening victory?
Sheldon Brown
Trent Cole
Victor Abiamiri
DeSean Jackson

CHARLOTTE -- Donovan McNabb fractured his rib in the Eagles' otherwise celebratory 38-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers today. Head coach Andy Reid didn't give a prognosis on whether McNabb would miss any time, although a team source said that the Eagles quarterback was "doubtful" for next Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Asked if it was safe to say that McNabb was out for next week, Reid said, "No, that's not safe to say."

McNabb apparently suffered his injury when he was tackled while plunging into the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run. He laid on the ground for a while, finally arose and walked off without assistance. He soon left the field to get examined. McNabb returned in his pads, but did not return to the game.

Reid said that McNabb was out there in case of emergency. Kevin Kolb replaced McNabb, but the Eagles didn't have another quarterback dressed.

"That's why he was out there," Reid said. "I probably would have done everything not to do that. That's why we took his pads off there at the end."

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson confirmed that he was the emergency quarterback if Kolb got hurt, too. Jackson took a few direct snaps in the Wildcat formation today.

Reid said he was confident that Kolb, if need be, would step in and do the the job.

"If it comes to that," Reid said.

Michael Vick will be serving the second game of his two-game suspension next week. He will be reinstated by Week 3. Kolb was ineffective filling for McNabb. He completed 7 of 11 passes for just 23 yards. He was also sacked twice.

The Eagles cut quarterback A.J. Feeley last week. He has not caught on with another team as of yet.

How is it they thought Kolb was going to be good? Wasn't it immediately apparent his arm sucks? Is it me or does he have a particularly weak arm?

Nothing like an obvious late/dirty hit on a star player, going completely ignored by the refs despite an injury. Par for the course when Philly teams are involved. Can we bring back Feeley and have an outside change, rather than suffer through a Kevin Kolb loss to the Aints.

I hope the Saints mop the field with them...and Michael Vick should NEVER be allowed to play..I hope they lose every game as long as he's on the team Tea Party (HTML deleted)

I agree with Pelti - it was a cheap shot. McNabb needs to be more aware, though. He was tentative on the play and it cost him. He needs to do a better job of protecting himself from those hits. The defense looked great! As long as that display was not a fluke, we might even have a chance with Kold in the game. We would just need a conservative offensive game plan...

So Westbrook, McCoy, Buckley, and Weaver are going to have a lot of carries on Sunday is what you are saying? Honestly this isn't a huge problem like some people are already claiming. He isn't out for the season with a knee injury or anything. He may miss 1 game or a few but he'll be back. And their schedule is as soft as you can ask (sans the Saints). Chiefs and Bucs at home with a bye and then Raiders at Oakland? Chances are Kolb might have been playing garbage time in these games anyway. GO BIRDS!

Sounds awfully similar to the '04 NFC Champ game against the Panthers where Greg Favors laid a cheap shot on Mcnabb and cracked his ribs then too. Scummy late hits, scummy organization. What's new?

wiff, you are the biggest hypocrite on this blog site. Get behind your quarterback? Are you for real? You embarass yourself on a daily basis but this is a new low, even for you. I was there in person and to say Kolb stunk, as usual, was an understatement. On another topic, what time will you be dropping off your Toyota at Goodwill? I'm sure you FORGOT about that little gem, no? I want to make the trip down for the occasion to watch them laugh and say they want cars that work, they aren't a junkyard. As for your 21 point lead comment, the game was not decided at that point and DM was showing the heart you say he doesn't possess. He was doing what he SHOULD have done with what was available. You are a complete waste wiff. Lonewolf 11, it was only a matter of time before someone did that, kudos. Now wiff, what time is the donation?

499, DM was barely on the field with all the Carolina turnovers. Can't say one way or another on hit> I thought he was hurt when he was bent over on the original him but replays at stadium didn't show much. I was sitting with a lot of Eagle sfans and no one said anything about a cheap shot.

Reid continues to show his stupidity - what was McNabb doing in the game with a 31-10 lead ? Why are we continuing to throw the ball rather than run clock up 38-10? Was he trying to get Kolb knocked out too? The unwillingness to do the obvious and the arrogance of this coach is amazing....

It most absolutely a cheap shot (elbow in the back while he's down in the end zone) and a late hit. There is no way McNabb could have avoided that. The NFL needs to take some sort of action on it.

Risky play for McNabb, but he's a competitor, not afraid to throw himself around. I'm liking what I see from McCoy, we might finally have two speed backs for once. I hope AJ Feely is ready for next week though. Kolb looked like a deer in the headlights getting stripped by Peppers. That won't cut it in the NFC East dude, the game is way faster than today.

Nothing a player can do when he is prone on the ground in the end- zone and a 250lb player jumps on him. There should have been a flag, but hey, we all knew 5 was going down at some point this season - including the Birds' brass. Just didn't think it would happen in week one. Kolb gets what may be his final chance to prove he can start in this league next week. After that, if 5 is out, it's the Michael Vick show.

How does anyone rip Andy for this play? It's easy to look back now and say McNabb shouldn't be in the game/run the ball but it is the middle of the third quarter and they were "only" up 21 points. before McNabb scored, the game was not out of reach. I think the play demonstrates McNabb's brittleness which is why I think the Vick signing was a good move.

I like what I say in McCoy. I think Kevin Curtis (That drop pass during the first drive did it for me and not to mention the bad blocks) should be benched, and we should start Maclin. I have never bashed Kolb, but DJack had the defender beat on that long throw, but had to come back and play dback when Kold completely under threw the ball.

I'm so sick of reading how incredibly moronic some of you are - the latest examples are those that question why McNabb is running a ball in near the goal-line when ONLY up 21. Equally stupid are those that question his "brittleness" or those that just use this article to comment on some sort of twisted Vick curse. All of you guilty of this are simply lame, unworthy, non-intelligent football fans - even if you are Birds fans, too! This is football, a fairly brutal sport and whether or not it was a cheap shot doesn't change the outcome. Give the defense credit for performing very well, and count the blessings that it's just one cracked rib and not worse. I literally hate all of you geeks who have no idea what you're talking about...

By the way, I noticed no one mentioned how McNabb was injured. He toke a knee to his side. And yes, Kolb does seem to be slower and he has to think about his blind side. Either he's a bit rusty or he just not quick enough. If he's our starting quarterback next week he has to speed things up and definitely consider throwing the ball away. Last year was last year. You got to give him a shot at working with the starters. Something else to think about...when McNabb can't find a receiver, he runs. What happens when Kolb can't find a receiver? I don't think running is Kolb's strongest trait. The Coaches may have to design plays so that Kolb can succeed. They're two different types of quarterback.

It's just that our QB got injured on it, so we're all ready to jump and sling venom at the guy for doing it (I wanted to, but took a deep breath first to chill).

Kolb looks so bad because they don't really let him run the same offense as McNabb...they can't sign Feeley or anybody else without cutting somebody, and when they activate Vick, they also have to cut somebody...not as easy as it seems...play Kolb and see what you have.
