McNabb doubtful for Sunday

POSTED: Sunday, September 13, 2009, 5:35 PM

Who was the player of the game in the Eagles’ opening victory?
Sheldon Brown
Trent Cole
Victor Abiamiri
DeSean Jackson

CHARLOTTE -- Donovan McNabb fractured his rib in the Eagles' otherwise celebratory 38-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers today. Head coach Andy Reid didn't give a prognosis on whether McNabb would miss any time, although a team source said that the Eagles quarterback was "doubtful" for next Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Asked if it was safe to say that McNabb was out for next week, Reid said, "No, that's not safe to say."

McNabb apparently suffered his injury when he was tackled while plunging into the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run. He laid on the ground for a while, finally arose and walked off without assistance. He soon left the field to get examined. McNabb returned in his pads, but did not return to the game.

Reid said that McNabb was out there in case of emergency. Kevin Kolb replaced McNabb, but the Eagles didn't have another quarterback dressed.

"That's why he was out there," Reid said. "I probably would have done everything not to do that. That's why we took his pads off there at the end."

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson confirmed that he was the emergency quarterback if Kolb got hurt, too. Jackson took a few direct snaps in the Wildcat formation today.

Reid said he was confident that Kolb, if need be, would step in and do the the job.

"If it comes to that," Reid said.

Michael Vick will be serving the second game of his two-game suspension next week. He will be reinstated by Week 3. Kolb was ineffective filling for McNabb. He completed 7 of 11 passes for just 23 yards. He was also sacked twice.

The Eagles cut quarterback A.J. Feeley last week. He has not caught on with another team as of yet.

How does anyone rip Andy for this play? It's easy to look back now and say McNabb shouldn't be in the game/run the ball but it is the middle of the third quarter and they were "only" up 21 points. before McNabb scored, the game was not out of reach. I think the play demonstrates McNabb's brittleness which is why I think the Vick signing was a good move.

I like what I say in McCoy. I think Kevin Curtis (That drop pass during the first drive did it for me and not to mention the bad blocks) should be benched, and we should start Maclin. I have never bashed Kolb, but DJack had the defender beat on that long throw, but had to come back and play dback when Kold completely under threw the ball.

I have no confidence whatsoever in Kolb....he looks lost out there and is even less accurate than McNabb. Get well soon Donny or get AJ ready for game 2. Good call from Eagles/Phillies/Irish....is Garcia willing to come in and play?? Plus he's married to a playboy playmate and will fit right in w/ Hank Baskett.

@ kop973hy: I take it that you're one of those shelf righteous IDIOTS who only want to see people suffer? Let me remind you that this is America, founded on Christian principles, of which, forgiveness is a major tenant of. You sound extremely un-American, you need to get the hell out of here.

I'm so sick of reading how incredibly moronic some of you are - the latest examples are those that question why McNabb is running a ball in near the goal-line when ONLY up 21. Equally stupid are those that question his "brittleness" or those that just use this article to comment on some sort of twisted Vick curse. All of you guilty of this are simply lame, unworthy, non-intelligent football fans - even if you are Birds fans, too! This is football, a fairly brutal sport and whether or not it was a cheap shot doesn't change the outcome. Give the defense credit for performing very well, and count the blessings that it's just one cracked rib and not worse. I literally hate all of you geeks who have no idea what you're talking about...

Pelti, Almost like the obvious late hit that hurt McNabb's ribs and knocked him out of the NFC Championship game a few years back. What is it with the Panthers?
