Fletcher Smith, the agent for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, confirmed this morning an ESPN.com report that said McNabb will receive $5.3 million in new money from the two-year restructuring the Eagles worked with his client Thursday night. That means the final two years of McNabb's contract is now worth $24.5 million with a good portion of that guaranteed.

Smith said the deal makes McNabb one of the three or four highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL. He also said he believed the sides would have worked out an extension a few years ago if it had not been for a series of injuries that prematurely ended McNabb's 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Eagles president Joe Banner said the two sides almost immediately started talking about a two-year restucture rather than an extension when conversations started with a meeting in late February.

"It was appropriate to make some adjustments so that he was rewarded commensurate with the way he plays," Banner said. "At the risk of saying something very counterintuitive, it was the fair thing to do. We do try to be fair with the guys. In this situation, we felt if we didn't make an adjustment in light of where he was at in the timing of the contract, it wouldn't be fair. That motivated us. He obviously had similar motivations and it worked out."

Banner said that the Eagles probably wouldn't consider an extension for McNabb at least until late in the 2010 season, which gives the team time to evaluate his play as well as the progress of backup Kevin Kolb, the team's first  choice in the 2007 draft.

"We had a discussion: should we do a long-term deal or should we just address the two years?" Banner said. "Frankly, we both wanted to do something that was really simple, so that he could stay focused on football and the team was focused on having the best year it could.  Very early, it was clear that with the complications of the unknowns it was going to be much easier to do two years. We were both fine with that so we just focused on that."

Banner was asked about how cornerback Sheldon Brown might react to McNabb's restructured deal given that the team has refused to address his contract situation.

"I don't see any comparisons between the two situations," Banner said. "We've said that there are a very limited number of what we'd say are extraordinary situations where the value of a contract and where the market warrant addressing a contract. Those are very rare. They're very much the exceptions. Obviously in this case we thought it met the criteria."

Donny Disco Super Bowl. Getcha Afros ready! Anyone have any shiny shirts/pants I can borrow? Preferably green in color? Here's to Victory. Go Birdz!!!

Good move, now is the time for Mcnabb to step up and prove he can win the big game.If he chokes again in a big game, then its time to move on,just like Randell. But i dont see Kolb as the answer,he will be no better than Rodney Pete

Good move for the Birds and McNabb...and I trust the Iggles are in a better position to decide if Brown is worth more or not - I bet they watch more tape, keep more stats and understand their scheme and their needs better than anyone posting, watching Sundays (then ESPN) and reading newspapers and internet sites. The team isn't perfect - but they make more good decisions than bad decisions. Can't wait until September - we start our march to the SB!

LJL - Well Ace, read again....I believe I said it was a 'perfectly good move', nothing mentioned about being any sort of 'great' move; in fact nowhere in my post did I even call McNabb 'great' I suggest you not infer so much and actually read what is posted. Now go back and read my original post one more time...... now UNDERSTAND?

"It was the fair thing to do" When did Banner give two stuff's worth about "fair"? Or maybe he meant "Fare"?

Commenters like DIERTE have it right because this isn't about egos and feelings. It's a business move that makes perfect sense for so many reasons. And, no matter what you might think, QBs are unique and treated as such. Also, don't comment on bounced balls, etc. That's such a ludicrous comment - it's more of a commenter's failure to focus on the great things McNabb can do. As for Sheldon, he's a good CB that fits extremely well in this scheme. You can't get too carried away with stats like "No TDs allowed in..." - that type of stat is a little overrated with regard to how the defense is schemed. Think about it - when a CB or some type of elaborate blitz is called, I'd say 80% of the time it is Brown who comes in. Not trying to be too negative, but understand the game (not the player in this case).

Just because Sheldon Brown wants a new contract does not mean doing somebody else's who only has 2 years left and is a top 5-8 player at the most important position in the league that history shows you can play into your late 30's at a high level vs. a solid 2nd or 3rd CB who is a legend in his own mind shouldn't stop the Eagles from getting this McNabb thing under control. The Jean-Gilles hiring Rosencrap is even funnier considering Nick Cole played 100% better than he did last year anyway.

CJinPA - I understood before. I understood that your inference was that this is a great move that separates us from those "poor Vikings". I also understand that these Iggles, WITH a "great" QB, won exactly one more game last year than those "poor Vikings". How you equate one more victory with a "great QB" is quite a mystery. THAT'S what I don't understand. Understand?

As an eighteen year old, McNabb is the only Eagle QB I've ever known. Not only would it be hard to imagine a team without him, I really really don't want to have to.

Brown is a very replaceable type of player and 30 yeras old. The Eagles have addressed that with the trade for Hobbs and drafting of Macho. I don't think either Brown will be on the final roster. Baskett, Justice, Klecko, and Eckel will also be gone.

Sheldon has never been to a pro bowl, he is short and is just a little above average in one on one coverage... Giving Mcnabb money is just so he shuts up. The only issue is if he leaves or wants another rework after 2010 and Kolb wants to leave, we have no qb.

Good move by the FO. Now Mcnabb has no excuses. He has the weapons, younger OL, financial security, it's now SB or bust. As for Sheldon, he is not a top tier DB so he should NOT BE paid like one. He took his big money upfront, and now has to live with the decision.

Now that McNabb has the new contract, let's see if the rest of the team steps up. I DON'T want to see: receivers failing to get open; receivers failing to run their route correctly (run INTO the end zone, Reggie Brown!); receivers dropping or fumbling away the ball in key situations; blockers (including TEs and FBs) totally whiffing on blocks; a lack of a balanced offense; a totally predictable offense; a run game that can't convert 3rd (or 4th) and 1; a defense (coaching AND players) that fails to get pressure in key situations; a defense that can't stop anything (run or pass) when it really matters (see especially the 2006 defense); or a defense (once again: coaching AND players) that will give up more than 17 points in a key game (21 absolutely needs to be the limit). It's funny that people gripe about McNabb getting a contract extension and forget about the way that Coaches, Westbrook, Dawkins, etc also came up a bit small when a big game was on the line.

This move makes no sense. We pay him more because his ego was hurt. He played better after the benching. Is McNabb untouchable? They show they need him and give him more money but in 2010, he can walk and the Eagles will get nothing. IS MCNABB WORTH MORE THAN TOM BRADY! No. He was making more than brady both years of the last 2 years of this contract. Moves like this go to show you that this organization is more interested in selling seats each year, than winning the title. I usually take the eagles' side in things, but the argument we made about other contacts is now thrown out the window. Yes, the QB is the general on the field and the face of the franchise. yes, the QB position needs to be addressed before the WRs, DEs, and CBs looking for new contracts. So why not sign him to an extension of one or 2 years and get him the same contract with the last 2 years not gauranteed? He will walk in 2010 and claim the organization did him wrong. Wait and see. The organization will get nothing for him.

CJinPA- I remeber the 60s and 70s too. I had a picture of Pete Liske on my wall. This was a great move. Good Eagle QBs are often generations apart.

The amount of time this guy missed over the life of his contract already provided him with a raise. It's not like he's Sheldon Brown, who actually played all the games he was paid to play...

birdsincolo: There isn't anything wrong with Sheldon asking for more money, per se. The worst they can do is say no. The problem is with these players purposely causing a distraction in order to force the team's hand. Yes, NFL teams can cut players whenever they want to. But lets not forget that the NFL Players Association *AGREED TO THE TERMS OF THAT CONTRACT!* There are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. If a player has a problem with that, then he should take it up with his union leadership. Not take matters into his own hands to try to get around the what has already been negotiated and agreed upon.

hmmmmm.....if this is such 'a joke' to some people, then what would you liked the front office to do? This is a perfectly good move to make. It's too bad all you 20 year olds who post here can't remember the 1991,92 and 93 seasons where the Eagles had the killer D, decent offense, NO QB!!!!! Or the 80's!! I love McNabb because we have a chance to dominate on offense each and every game. Doesn't always happen, but more times than not, Donovan gives this team a chance to win their games. All you crybaby McNabb haters will see someday when he is gone and we're struggling without a franchise QB. Go look at that poor team, the Vikings. SB caliber team, no QB. GO #5 (section 135 - Season ticket holder)

Uh 76er....Sheldon Brown is NOT the leader of the defense. Are you clueless? You must be to say something like that! As I've said earlier on other posts, now that he has his moolah, let him go out and win the Super Bowl THIS YEAR with his new weapons. Let's see if he can FINALLY do it this time!!!

And i thought he gone after this year.... People need to pay attention. Sheldon Brown is NOT AVERAGE...Sheldon had one td thrown on him in 19 games last year! No one throws his way. He is durable (never injured in 6 years). He is still a top 10 cornerback. I would restructure his deal for make it for 2 years instead of the current 4, but instead of 2 a year he should get 5. That might make him happy and then he can leave 2 years later and we'd still have hobbs and hanson

just few things on this....first of all, the restructuring allows us to eliminate any controversy re: mcnabb's contract status for a couple of years. Im glad for that, b/c the team doesn't need more distractions and he really is a top 10 nfl qb, so regardless of the lack of big game success and the penchant for missing recivers w/in 10 yards by 10 yards, finding an upgrade at qb AND acclimating that upgrade to the offense while the keeping the team in the playoff mix could prove extremely tough. Secondly, lets remember that it was the defense that carried this team at the second half of last season for about 8 weeks while donovan pulled it together. All this talk about how strong he finished is caused largely by the one poor performance the d had during that stretch- the ncf champs game vs. the cards. donovan was very good that game and the d sucked and thas how the season will be remembered, but thats really the whole picture. re:sheldon brown- everyone is down him for causing a disturbance over his contract. lets not forget that he is a very good player and while he is only adequate to above average in man coverage, he is exceptional against the run and that is an important part of the package. Also- if sheldon had underperformed last season and the eagles wanted to sever ties w/ him, sheldon would not see any of the money remaining on his contract. so, whats wrong with asking for more if you feel you are overperforming your contract?

Great move! I love it! I can only hope by then end of 2010 he gets an extension to retire an eagle. He has been the face of the franchise since he came up a rookie. He deserved this...

Really smart business move. No way they could have done an extension with the CBA expiring at the end of 2010. Assuming all goes well, a new CBA gets into place before 2010 expires, and an extension if warranted gets done.
