McCoy, Tapp win praise from coaches

What will Donovan McNabb hear Sunday when he returns to Lincoln Financial Field?
More boos than cheers
More cheers than boos
A mix

LeSean McCoy's number from Sunday don't pop out: 11 carries for 54 yards, two catches for seven yards, no touchdowns. But offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the running back stood out in blitz protection.

"The stats don't show it, but I think LeSean may have had one of his better games," Mornhinweg said Thursday. "He did an excellent job with his blitz recognition."

The Eagles used their backs, McCoy, Mike Bell and Owen Schmitt, to supplement their pass protection against the Jaguars. They still gave up three sacks, but it was far fewer than the five against the Packers and six against the Lions.

Picking up blitzes was a skill McCoy needed to improve going into his second year, especially with the loss of Brian Westbrook, who was known for helping his quarterbacks with his blocking.

Mornhinweg said experience has made it easier for McCoy to react quickly and physically.

"If you know where you’re going and you recognize it very quickly – boom – you can utilize your physical ability," Mornhinweg said. "I think that was a dramatic jump for him from last year coming into this year."

Defensive end Darryl Tapp, meanwhile, finally got on the field after being inactive the first two weeks of the season and recorded a sack. He also helped create some pressure.

Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said Tapp continued to work hard even when he wasn't playing.

"He just seemed each and every practice each and every week to continue to catch on to how we were doing things," McDermott said.

Earlier, the Eagles signed cornerback Jamar Wall to the practice squad and released safety Jamar Adams.

This Owen Schmidt seems to have been a real nice pick-up. I don't recall any balls thrown out to him that he's missed, and several of his blocks have been just shy of being de-cleaters. It's almost as if we have too many guys that can catch the ball. Anxious to see Schmidt in a true fullback mode, running interference while a RB tries to ice the game running out the clock. Here's hoping it's Sunday.

Darryl Tapp and Michael Vick - The Hokies have landed in Philly! Wish Macho could have somehow made it too...

Isn't it telling that Macho and Demps remain free agents? In related news, the struggling Niners benched both Takeo Spikes and Michael Lewis, the Eagles torched Sean Considine repeatedly last week (OK, he got one sack), and no one had seen or heard from Sheldon Brown since the season started.

OK Mr Morningweig, when are you going to start pounding the rock with McCoy, Bell and Schmidt ?? The reason why you have a dozen + sacks is because everybody knows you pass too much. Pound it !!

The loss of Westbrook has been mostly overlooked when we talk about offensive line play. Part of the pass protection problems has been with the backs. They're not bad, but Westbrook was one of the best. I thought he should have been kept here one more year for that reason, being used mainly in passing situations.

tackling Joe - how many receptions does Westbrook have this season? I'll tell you. He has 2 receptions for 6 yards. How many handoffs has he received? I'll tell you. 1 for 0 yards. Get some facts and come back and see me. If all he can do is block nowadays, I don't want him. Frank Gore runs the show in San Fran. LeSean McCoy runs the show here in Philly.
