Marty Mornhinweg: 'I don't think there's a problem' with LeSean McCoy's carries

POSTED: Thursday, November 15, 2012, 2:55 PM

Statistics can sometimes be deceiving. They can also be revealing. So the question posed to Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was simple: What does he make out of the fact that the Eagles are 3-0 when LeSean McCoy gets at least 20 carries, and 0-6 when he gets fewer than 20 carries?

"I make that we're in four-minute [offense] at the end of the game, so he gets a few more carries," Mornhinweg said. "It's just simple."

This is a factual inaccuracy, though. McCoy has had five carries in the final four minutes of wins this season. Five.

Told that the Eagles came from behind in their wins, Mornhinweg didn't waver.

"I think LeSean is eighth in carries and fourth in total touches; I don't think there's a problem there," Mornhinweg said. "Every game is different. You have to dig into every game. And usually the ball carriers a few more carries when you're ahead in the four minute and toward the end of the game."

Mornhinweg was correct about the amount of carries and touches that McCoy has. So it's not as if he isn't being used. But the carries number is telling -- 20 or more, the Eagles win. Twenty or fewer, the Eagles lose.

Of course the All-talk, All-hype, Dynasty, Gold Standard, Salary Cap Bowl winning team's OC wouldn't think there's a problem even though they are 3 and 6. This team is more delusional than any the Tonner's ever seen before. Either that or they just don't care. If Reid brings Marty to SD with him, he's a bigger moron than the Tonner thought he was. And that's saying something.

The problem is Morhinweig doesn't see a problem.

the problem is fans keep buying tickets and selling out the Linc, while jeff lurie sits in his box, sipping his chablis, munching on canapés and looking down his nose at joe sixpack freezing his nuts off in the stands

Marty's problem is that he's a former head coach and wants to get back there again. The only way he's gonna get interviews for head coaching jobs is to have lofty stats as a top-ranked offensive coordinator. It's difficult to generate a league-leading offensive ranking by just handing the ball off to McCoy. Only the top-ranked coordinators get those few interviews per year.

Who in their right mind would hire this stiff? His career record is 5-27. That is a .156 winning pct.

Well put unstable1.. stubbornness rules the day with this staff. They won't change because that would be proving their way is wrong. They are the definition of insanity and they are dragging everyone else down with them.

the problem with McCoy's carries is there isn't enough of them. And half the attempts are the same 'up the middle' play which hasn't worked in 10 years. But he'll keep trying it anyway....

The trouble with Marty, and his boss, is articulated perfectly in the article: They have NO foundation at all. A coach who believes in running the football will tell you (and I have seen it a hundred times) that, regardless of who gets the carries, they want to run it X number of times per game, every game. They have a foundation on which they operate their offense, and their team as a whole. Marty and Andy seem to have none.
