D-Jax responds to Jenkins; Macho still the man?
Bob Brookover and Jeff McLane
DeSean Jackson responded to comments made by Dallas cornerback Mike Jenkins earlier this week. Jenkins didn't exactly call the Eagles wide receiver a punk, but he did kind of call out Jackson when he said the Cowboys defense wouldn't allow the speedster to run past it.
"If that's how he's feeling than that's how he's feeling," Jackson said today. "I don't get caught up in things like that. I'm not going to entertain this. I got a job to go out there and make plays, which I'm going to do. I don't think nobody's going to stop me from doing that."
Jackson was held in check in the first meeting. He had only two catches for 29 yards. The Pro Bowl receiver and punt returner has exploded, however, since that loss. He was asked if it was unwise of Jenkins to prod one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NFL.
"I'm not going to make it a bigger deal than it already is," Jackson said. "I have what I need inside of me to get me going for the game. That's all I care about. I don't feel I need to talk or relay messages through the media."
Here's Jenkins' exact quote when he was asked how the Dallas secondary would contain Jackson:
“We’re just playing the deep balls. The main thing is they try to catch you off-guard. It’s yet to happen to us, and we’re not planning on it to happen. I guess he runs past a lot of guys, and it’s not going to happen this week. It’s not going to happen to us, period.”
Macho could still return kicks
Despite coming off a game in which he fumbled twice -- losing one of them -- on kickoff returns, Victor "Macho" Harris could still be handling that job Sunday when the Eagles play the Dallas Cowboys with the NFC East title on the line.
Special teams coordinator Ted Daisher said the first choice is Quintin Demps, but the Eagles aren't sure if he can handle the role because of a sprained right ankle that has hindered him since the team's first meeting with Dallas Nov. 8.
"We're going to see how Quintin Demps' ankle is," Daisher said. "Day to day, we're still not sure what he's going to be able to do and what he's not going to be able to do. Victor Harris would be the next guy in the mix. We have to get some things corrected with him, but he would be the next guy."
Daisher said receiver Jeremy Maclin is also an option, but added it's imperative that Harris learns from the two fumbles that could have cost the Eagles the game against Denver.
"You have to understand that you can't bring the ball out of the end zone when you're going backwards and when he gets in traffic, he has to secure the football," Daisher said. "Those are the two things he has to get better at this week."
In addition to fumbling twice, Harris averaged just 15.3 yards per return on three kickoffs. The only one he didn't fumble, he made the mistake of returning from three yards deep in the end zone and only got back to the 15-yard line. Daisher said he does not think Harris will lose confidence.
"The one thing you don't ever have to worry about with Victor is confidence," he said. "He's a very confident guy. He knows he made mistakes. He knows he'll correct him. You like working with guys like that. He came in and watched film, we went over it several times and I think he'll be fine."
Harris' 20.7-yard return average on 19 kickoff returns is ranked 32nd in the league. By contrast, Demps has averaged 25.8 yards on six returns.
According to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Harris will also continue to have a prominent role on defense against the Cowboys. Sean Jones started at free safety Sunday against the Broncos, but Harris was on the field for the majority of snaps.
"It will be the same moving forward," McDermott said. "Whatever the situation dictates, that's where Sean will go in or Macho will go in."
Jones started the last game against the Cowboys and had seven tackles and a sack.
Vick expected to play
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he thinks Michael Vick will play Sunday against the Cowboys. Vick did not practice yesterday because of a quad contusion that kept him out of the game against the Broncos, but he said he will do some running today.
Happy New Year from the two-man team at BEV, your best source for Eagles information.
Macho playing most of the snaps at safety and returning kicks is too much. Get someone else to return. P Even
If it were not for Banner's ego he would have Dawk at FS. He foolishly played a bad hand of poker with Dawk and then thought he was bigger than the team on the field to do a mea culpa. Same thing is going down with Sheldon. Lurie is too weak a leader to step in on his buddy who has a blind spot playing poker. Earl J- Agree with P Even, give Maclin a shot... he was a prolific KR in college - 5 total return td in 2 years.. vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKsUjZWiz7g Maclin's 1,346 yards in total kick returns in 2007 was two yards shy of the NCAA single-season record. Maclin's average of 73.18 yards per game gained on kickoff returns is the best since Steve Odom of Utah set the NCAA record (78.24 ypg, 1971-73). OppoJack
- I seem to recall they have this guy named Westbrook who has returned a few kicks in his career. And he has a pretty good reputation for holding onto the ball. The coaches aren't going to drop this in some reporter's lap on Friday but don't be surprised to see Westbrook returning kicks in the biggest game of the year.
they could bring back bloom and get better results than macho. JACK V
Al wilson you are an IDIOT. Maybe 5 years ago westbrook could have been used to return kicks but not now. there is a difference between returning a kick and returning a punt which westbrook was used to do early in his career. bleedgreen22
Nice reply by the youngster Jackson... glad to see he didn't get caught up in the sound byte war.. good on ya youngin... Let your play do your talking! He may have bit his tongue, but this has only got to add fuel to the fire.. I look for a big game from DJax! Go Eagles! 14philly
Watch jenkins get burnt early for a deep one by not Jackson but Maclin... MJPD345

Whatever! Bring on the Game!!! DJ
He is a punk. To his credit he didn't respond like one though. I don't see a problem with the Jenkins quote however. kmon
D-Jax is no punk. HE'S THE MAN!!! ItsOnLikeDK
Good Lord, is someone really still crying over Dawkins??? smfree31- DALLAS S*#%& . none of their players should be talking there's a game to be played on the field.. fly eagles fly!!!
please leave Macho home or better yet cut him. He uffers from repeat offenses on the same day!! Need anyone say more?? hrlevine- Jenkins is the punk. Watch him on the field, acting like he is some kind of superstar on just about every play. He is going to be eating some crow after he gets burned deep on Sunday.
Comment removed.- Yep. Dawkins now and Lee until October.
We do NOT need super-heroic efforts by the Kick Returner! Our Offense can move the ball whenever they have it. If he (whoever he is!)does nothing more than make the correct decision about catching the ball, and hanging on to it when he does, I will be quite satisfied. FLY IGGLES FLY!!! TBear- Nobody has commented on the Village people picture yet? You guys are slipping duffers
Desean is always proving his haters wrong. He is mature beyond his years and for some one who was said to be a "problem" he is becoming the face of the Eagles. jaydes
bdawk should have been called for 10 interference penalties in that game. He isn't fast enough to stay with anyone any more. can only go forward. He keeps doing that Wolverine diving stuff that isn't particularly effective. I love the guy but he is a liability now. Should have his number retired as an Eagle notch44
DeSean (fiddy+) Jackson. Nuff said. flyerdup
kmon - a punk huh? Tough words over the Internet. Jackson is our best WR since Mike Quick - that is what he is. As for Reid, if he is dumb enough to have Harris return kicks then we deserve to lose. Put Westbrook and Maclin back there if Demps is not healthy. Malcolm65
5 super bowl rings to 0 Chattanooga
Fact: The Eagles are 0-1 against the Cowboys without Dawkins. TexBigBalls
Yes, can we stop whining about Dawkins. Love the guy. But he's gone. He's on a team the Eagles beat. He was here last year and the Eagles went 9-6-1. Without him, the Eagles are 11-4 and can win another division title. The Eagles did not win a Super Bowl with him. Slovs

Chattanooga - 5 super bowls to 0? What gives a damn? That is totally irrelevant where Sunday's game is concerned. End of the day Sunday, one team will be the NFC East champ and the other will be a wild card team. I'd put my money on the Eagles being the NFC champ if I were you. Keep focusing on past glory if it makes you feel better, though. racn4acure
what kind of tool calls desean jackson a punk abm87
The Eagles will probably break something deep, but that doesn't mean they'll win. It'll take more than big plays. tacklinjoe
DALLAS SUCKS xrajux
What a nothing to do with the story headline. What did D-Jax say in response? That he wasnt going to respond and get into it. WOW. Those are fighting words in my neighborhood. Pat c
racn4acure - Foe all the success the Beagles have had over the past ten years, WHAT DO YA HAVE TO SHOW FOR IT?? 4 conference championship loses and a SB...ahem, APPEARANCE. Post when you've ACTUALLY won the SB title. Until then, you are only a notch better than the Danny White led Cowboys of the early 80's. Swyve
So many opinions, so much dissension. Look, we can all agree on one thing: the dallas cowboys, and their fans, are horrible human beings. PhilaLogic- Lame headline. He "responded" by saying he wasn't responding, and the original comment was nothing, anyway. Jim C.

Desean Jackson is a beast! I don't care if he talks junk or stays classy, he can do no wrong in my eyes. Mike Jenkins is scared. PhillyHouse JayDuce
Hey Eagles fans, dont worry guys I love the birds just as much as you do but listen, is it just me or do you agree with the following: The EAGLES are the hottest team in the NFC right now. Their record is 11-4, could be 13-1, I belive the Dallas and Oakland loses could have gone either way. They have won 6 out of their last 6 and are poised for the second seed and a first round bye. YET the EAGLES get no recognition or respect from the national media who hates Philly. I think this is sad but respect and recognition do not win games. Is it just me or, if the cowgirls where in the same situation that we are in e.g. winning record, swept ny and wash, 6 straight wins, second in scoring ect ect they would be considered the best team in the NFL, the media would be praising Tony H.o.m.o and bluto (wade phillips). Can somebody tell me why is this????? why are we underdogs this Sunday????? What has the cowgirls done?????? Im confused, is it just me???? somebody help.......GO BIRDS!!!! bow
How was Jenkins supposed to respond? "I am going to get beat repeatedly, I might as well not even show up on Sunday?" I really saw nothing wrong with what he said. theo42
Macho sucks PhillyIam
if the game is on the line i nominate westbrook to be the guy to return kicks. Sixersed
Never said the guy isn't good. Let's see what happens when he wants #1 money after the season and the Eagles tell him he's signed for 3 (I think it's about that many) more years. His agent is Drew Rosenhaus afterall. kmon
VICTOY will be ours come Sunday!!!! rodney.santiago
J-Mac fumbled on Kicks too in the preseason? Let Reggie Brown or Kevin Curtis return them? mikey48
