Lurie: Roseman 'one of brightest young' GMs
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
While most of the attention during Jeffrey Lurie's press conference centered around whether Andy Reid would return for a 14th season -- and he will, the Eagles owner said -- there was some uncertainty about the status of general manager Howie Roseman after the Eagles finished the season 8-8.
Lurie, though, made it clear that Roseman would return when he said the 36-year-old would "absolutely" be back for a third season.
“He’s one of the brightest young guys in the league," Lurie said in the hallway of the NovaCare Complex after he announced Reid's return.
It's difficult to evaluate Roseman from the outside, not only because the Eagles are so tight-lipped, but because Reid has final say in personnel decisions, as Lurie reiterated today. But Lurie praised Roseman for his evaluations of free agent-signings like defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, defensive end Jason Babin, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and guard Evan Mathis.
"These are great moves," Lurie said. "Very excited about both what [Roseman] brings to it, and he’ll only get better, too."
The Eagles had a number of free agents busts, though, with wide receiver Steve Smith, running back Ronnie Brown and quarterback Vince Young.
Of further question is Roseman's ownership in the last two drafts. He is ultimately responsible for making most of the evaluations of college prospects and for setting up the draft board, but Lurie said again that Reid is the ultimate decider on draft day.
Either way, the Eagles' draft record over the last several years -- especially on the defensive side of the ball -- has been dubious.
"The analysis is complicated," Lurie said. "We’ve had a pretty good defense and we’ve had a lot of veteran players we’ve brought in who’ve been very successful who’ve probably over-played the draft choices. If you look back just two years on defense, I know Andy and his team is very excited about [2010 top draft pick] Brandon Graham having a healthy offseason and should be a top-tier pass rusher."
Graham tore his knee up last December and hardly played during his second season.
"We brought in a top-tier pass rusher [Babin] because we didn’t necessarily think Brandon was going to be healthy this year," Lurie said. "In today’s NFL, it’s a combination of draft, free agency, whatever. Every aspect has to be analyzed by everyone in terms of internally. It’s putting the pieces together.”
If Lurie is going to have a haberdasher and an accountant run the front office of a professional football team I guess it is ok for the head coach to hire an offensive experienced coach to run the defense. Sounds like a good script for a movie, that Lurie could bankroll. This is all fodder for movie material. johnny eagle- The Owner who is 0-18 in his quest for the Lombardi Trophy sticks with the coach who is 0-13 in his quest for the Lombardi trophy and the GM puppet who still thinks this is all pretty cool. It will be a very long time before a Lombardi trophy comes to this city.
Voytas - As if you have a clue what goes into putting a football team together. If you've followed the Eagles while Reid has been coach, you'd know he's one of the top 3 if not the top. There were circumstances during each season and game that you need to consider. A haberdasher and accountant run the Eagles? When the Eagles start winning next year, please disappear.

hahahaha...brightest young guys in the league?...seriously, what is lurie smoking and where can i get some? 1stamendment
Now THAT is disconcerning. tpizza
What is he talking about? Babin - Brought in by Washburn. Mathis- Brought in by Mudd. Cullen Jenkins: Nice pick-up. Nnamdi- Exposed all season as a poor tackler who probably benefited from playing on a poor defense in Oakland where it was a no brainer to just not throw his way. With Asante on the other side, teams couldn't just not pass to Nnamdi's side of the field and he got burned quite a few times. Since that is Roseman's only free agent evaluation that matttered, it seems he got rooked for 60 million. Add in the terrible draft picks, trading out of the second round and missing Sean Lee, trading up to select Graham over Pierre-Paul and Earl Thomas, it takes cohones to claim he is one of the brightest. At least Reid sports a real resume that the rest of the league respects even if the Eagles fans don't. UncleStosh
What Rosenman knows about football talent evaluation could be written on the head of a needle in size 40 font! I don't know what Howie is BRIGHT at but it is not talent evaluation. Evidence: the state of the Eagles safety and linebacker corps. Not one of them would start on a playoff team! Graham was a winner of a pick too. Can anyone tell me he can hold a candle to Thomas or to Pierre Paul for that matter! Lurie is either FOS or just plain stupid! Howie even looks like a lap dog! Commonesnes
Lurie is a fool if he thinks anyone is buying Roseman is one of the brightest in the NFL. The drafts on defense have been beyond poor.
Lurie has also done a poor job as an owner.

The picture of the bright, young GM to the left of the article made me think back to the monthly covers on one of my favorite magazines as a young kid.....Mad Magazine and it's resident genius, Alfred E. Neumann DelawareRiverRat
Wow. That's it Jeff, bring back the accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid. The results have been great thus far if you consider "great" meaning profitable. What's that? That's all you're concerned about? That's what the Tonner thought. Bringing back that glorified stock clerk as GM is proof positive. Whether you like it or whether you don't like it, learn to love it because it's the truth according to the Tonner and it's the best thing going today. hunglikeaton- well done, Tonner. The accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid is the perfect description of this supposed NFL franchise.

Say what you want about Jeff Lurie but he knows Eagle fans will still buy tickets even if they don't buy his BS!!! jmb53
This man is a football idiot. He has a PhD, so I'm assuming he isn't a complete idiot. But what a football tard. He either needs to sell the team or fire the fat man....preferably both. Curse of Billy Penn
If there's a football player out there named V.I. Warshawski, Lurie will make sure he's their first pick. mackwheaton
Not one solid starter from the last two drafts, not ONE. snakeplissken
Roseman is Lurie's boy. Let's find another team or form of "entertainment" to support. eaglephanatic

Uncle Stosh nailed it with his comments. camasbud
this should tell you all you need to know about those who are ruining - er running - our beloved NFL franchise. I am speechless. coloradoeagle
Whether Roseman is the decider or Reid is, the cards are on the table. If you were to list, from best to worst, the ten best draft picks in the Andy Reid era, Trent Green would be the only defensive player on it. Reid does not have an eye for defensive stars, and why would he? He's an offensive strategist. Jeff Lurie should acknowledge this and secure the services of a proven talent evaluator. Jerry Angelo, credited with building Tony Dungy's monster D in Tampa, was fired by the Bears today. Bill Polian who is widely respected as a great talent evaluator was fired by the Colts yesterday, Jeff Lurie's worst decision as owner of the Eagles was to give a good coach the last word on all things related to football. Reid is clearly not better-than-aveage as a judge of talent. Lurie needs to bring in somebody that is. gnarlyscuzz- we will never attain success with the 3 stooges running this organization. Lurie had the chance to change the course of an awful season and he opted to "quid pro quo"
Yeah, you really need to be a genius to bring in Asomugha, Jenkins and Babin. That's about having the money, not about talent evaluation. All those guys were proven players. p-diddy
The eagles can do whatever they want and get away with it because you dopes willl keep buying tickets. Stop going to the games if you want change. ArtieLange
the draft is the most important part of the eagles.. Buddy Ryan, like him or not, knew how to draft and find talent. chalton harley
Dear God, if Lurie thinks Roseman is a bright GM, this team really is going down the toilet! In the last 2 drafts, Howie the Accountant has been nothing short of horrible with his selections. He hit on one player this past year, a 6th rounder (Kelce), but I strongly believe this was Mudd's selection, with Reid's blessing. Two years ago, Howie hit on one player, in the 2nd round (Allen) who has potential, despite injury problems. The rest (Quantity over Quality) are camp fodder or special team candidates on most teams. On the Eagles, however, they are starters and or key backups. Their Linebacking core is the joke of the NFL, but no need to tell Arrogant Andy that, as he doesn't even acknowledge the importance of Linebackers. That's why you'll never see the Eagles draft a Linebacker at #1.... EVER! younged
what games has lurie been watching..loves,reid,roseman et al...no fault, no problems...i guess his ivory tower doesn't get cable lewisbratspis
Come on Jeff. At least with Reid you can make a case for your decision but Howie? My German Shepard is smart too but I wouldn't trust him with the draft. This is one place where the fans can say fire him and name a couple of guys with legit resumes that are available and would be an upgrade [Angelo, Polian]. Get Howie out of there. PLEASE!!!!! tpizza
Lurie embarrassed himself today. This organization is a disgrace. The Philly sports fan deserves better. blchops08

If Lurie had some cajones and half a brain he would take a page out of the book of the team across the street and bring in Polian as a 'mentor' for Roseman ala Gillick to RAJ. Think about it! miahjer- wow, just wow. I am almost speechless. this is my "unbelievable" moment of the eagles season thanks to Jeffrey. Not celebrating a SB, or a great playoff win, but being shocked at him retaining some of the biggest morons in the entire league. wow. it.just.got.worse.
Every time Lurie or Banner speak, delusion is spewed all over the public. It is unbelievable. In their minds they feel they are the premier franchise in football, that Reid is the sharpest, most trend setting coach, and Roseman is one of the best and brightest. The justification? The Eagles are premier in Lurie's eyes because they are his franchise. Reid is the best coach out there in Lurie's eyes because he hired him. Roseman is one of the best and brightest in Lurie's eyes because Lurie hired him. The games and results don't make a difference. It is because Lurie thinks and says it is. jtj06
"young and bright" = cheap and malleable otterstratton
HI eagles fans the one writer that is most greatful for Lurie keeping reid and then saying its up to ried is that guy who is called Paul
D that he must be singing garden of roses he loves reid more than reid loves to snack ouch Gmario
hey CharlieGarner25 i know you try very hard to educate some people on this board but like fox news and the clowns that watch this awful network and hate the facts and honest truth will make light of you knowledge, Lurie is Coward that has money and no balls, no real man would put up with his folly except one philly writer you know the name
Paul D this guy will do anything to be on the reid dole caio Gmario
Lurie is delussional. The only way the Lombardi Trophy ends up in Philly with these idiots running things is if it falls out of an airplane flying back to the city that deserves it for having a real front office and coach. Luriesucks
Comment removed.- Thanks! Seems like a no-brainer to me WIN-WIN and HOPEFULLY... WINS for the Birds.

I guess the one truly sad aspect of Lurie's dog-and-pony show is that he actually expects people to believe it. NM Eagle fan
Lurie only proves what too much money will do. He worked the city of Philadelphia to pay for a new stadium, then he gets away with fielding a team which can never win the Super Bowl. People, wake up, you can stop this guy, just don't buy a ticket. J. McClung
The Eagles need a true FOOTBALL guy in the front office. This is a business and you need the "bean counters", but you need someone with a football background, Roseman is a true bean counter. Lurie said that they checked with others in the NFL and they said yes keep Andy, duh! What do you think their going to say. Laurie said the players want him back too, duh they are the players, their not stupid, their not going to throw the coach under the bus.
stang66302- Great points. Reid seems to be complacent and have too high of an opinion of himself. So do his players. A perfect match. Much better than someone who holds them accountable. The rest of the league LOVES Reid as an Eagles' coach. He is very easy to prepare for, never changes, and they have reels and reels of game film on his teams.
jtj06 - Like I said...Bring in Polian. Mentor Roseman and teach the organization how to build a team the right way.
miahjer
So many of you Experts are perfect in your analysis after the Fact... Y'all SHOULD JUST stop WITH THE bulls^&$. Yea y'all Experts knew that Jason Pierre Paul was going to be the stud player he has become.haahahaha "LIARS" HAHAHAHA. Anyone see that Nnamdi tackle on Chris Cooley... "Nnamdi can't tackle." Oh Please!!! He may have had some problems adjusting to a New Scheme but he is still one of the top two CB in the league and Yea I think Howie is one of the very best young GM in the league... I just need to stop acknowledging some of these idiotic posts by people posing as Eagle fans. Maybe y'all figure out how good you really have it with Reid as the Eagles coach. nah I don't think so hahahahahah. GO Eagles. trinieagle

he is no even close to Ozzie Newsome of the Ravens.. braven98
The last 2 drafts show the "mind" of Howie R. Sorry, but I do not buy that FatRed has the final say. All points to Nickels and the Jeffrey. After listening and reading the Lurie doctrine, my question is who is crazier - the owner or us, Eagles fans. It is a tough call! lgm4885
so he's good at picking up veteran established players??? how about picking up a rookie that can play... clearly he cant evaluate talent at the draft... i hate to break it to andy but thats what wins super bowls... and the reason he cant win one. this team can only evaluate talent when they are already superstars. he can find the a reggie white, a james harrison, a ray lewis, a brian urlacher... the GM and Coach are both garbage. Apollo Creed
Lurie makes me want to gag. But so long as they're printing money down there in MargarEagleville, all is well. Fool's gold, indeed. PhillySubsMac
