Lurie: Reid is best coach to win championship

Do you agree with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie that coach Andy Reid has the “intangibles” to win a Super Bowl?
Yes. Players love Reid, and he is good at rebounding after a poor season. 2012 will be great.
No. Reid hasn’t show many tangibles or intangibles over 13 seasons.

Andy Reid will be back to coach the Eagles for a 14th season, team owner Jeffrey Lurie said Tuesday afternoon. He said decisions about defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will come from Reid.

"Andy Reid to me not only has the love of the players and respect, he also has the fire in his belly to be the best," Lurie said, though he expressed anger about this season's results.

But he said if the Eagles want to win a championship next season Reid is the best coach for the job.

"if I didn't think next year would be substantially better I'd be standing up here announcing a coaching change," Lurie said.

After an 8-8 season that began with big aspirations, Lurie said this year was "without question the most disappointing" since he has owned the team. He called the results after a 10-6 finish last year "unacceptable."

Reid's team started 4-8 as his hand-picked choice for defensive coordinator, Juan Castillo, struggled. The defense lost five fourth quarter leads to dig that hole that was too deep for the Eagles to make the playoffs. Lurie called the start of the season "dismal."

The team finished with a four-game winning streak to avoid a losing season, but Lurie said it was against poor competition.

Reid has led the Eagles to the playoffs nine times in 13 seasons and has won the most games in franchise history. But the team has slid in recent seasons. This will be their third straight year without a playoff win and the Eagles have failed to get a postseason victory in five of the past seven seasons.

Reid has two years left on his contract, which makes the 2012 season critical. Teams rarely let coaches enter the final year of their contract without the security of additional seasons, so after 2012 the Eagles will likely have to decide whether to extend Reid or cut ties with their long time coach.

This is a developing story. We'll have more soon.

Glad he has the fire because he'll never get the ring. Kiss 2012 goodbye. Soon there will be few left alive who will even remember the Eagles 1960 championship...

Pitchers and Catchers how soon! I am 65 and it looks like I will eclipse another decade before the possibility (slim as it may be) of winning a Superbowl!

I wish Lurie had just told the truth. He should have just said "I'm making money and I don't really care about winning a Super Bowl".

LIBERACE LURIE, way to go Pete60!!

The definition of INSANITY is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Lurie is bringing the same dimwit back for the 14th straight year and tells us he expects a different result.

Surely he has Mental Health benefits.

And Andy will put together another "almost" next year and get a 3 year extension.

So I was watching the Eagles/Washington game and my wife says "I'm going to the mall with the kids to return stuff at Children's Place. Do you want to come or stay home and watch the game?" I said let me find my keys. Wanna take my truck or the mini-van?

True story on my current indifference to the Eagles.

I think he should be back next year and anything short of a Super Bowl appearance and he can pack his bags. The sheer arrogance of this organization for accomplishing no championships is amazing. And what makes Jeffrey think Reid will win one? Is it being outcoached in 3 out of 4 NFC Championships or being out coached in the Super Bowl. He is simply never going to win until he has some accountability. A coach fearing for his job does not make an offensive line coach the DC. Any other coach with a football front office would have been fired for such a move.

There are 2 reasons why Lurie did not can this arrogant scam artist. 1. He doesn't have the guts and 2. He loves his $$ more than winning a SB.

Jimmy Johnson was the best thing to ever happen to Reid. RIP Jimmy. Jimmy gone, no playoff wins.

A lot of room in Reid's midsection to have "fire in his belly." It's suited to a big fire.

The Eagles don't simply need a coaching change; they need a regime change. They need to hire a GM, who will then hire his own coach. Banner needs to mind the cap, and Roseman needs to be re-assigned. How many Super Bowls have the Jets (and the Rams before them)won since they were taken over by capologists? That's right, none. Mike Francesa can't stop ripping the Jets because of the way they have handled their business; well, Mike, in spite of how much you love Reid, the Eagles aren't really any better.
