Kolb wants to start or wants out
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Kevin Kolb isn’t one for ultimatums – he handled his demotion this season with class – but the backup quarterback wants out if the Eagles plan on bringing Michael Vick back as their starting quarterback, a source close to the situation said.
Kolb wants to start and whether that’s for the Eagles or not, he will let coach Andy Reid know that during a scheduled Monday meeting. The 26-year-old has been the Eagles' backup for most of four seasons.
Asked what would be a best-case scenario for next season, Kolb said, “To start.”
“I love it here, as everybody knows,” Kolb said after the Eagles’ 21-16 playoff loss to the Packers. “My family’s settled in here. I would love to be starting here. But I want to be starting somewhere.”
Kolb was then asked if could take another season in Philadelphia as the backup.
“I can’t answer that question,” he said.
Kolb is under contract for another season, though. The Eagles gave him a one-year extension and an $11 million bonus last April after they traded away Donovan McNabb and gave him the starting job. But he’s slated to earn only $1.4 million next season, which is a very low sum for a backup.
Vick, however, is not under contract for next season. The Eagles are expected to franchise him if there is a tag in the new collective bargaining agreement as most assume there will be.
The labor situation could tie up any wheeling and dealing between teams which means Kolb could be in no-mans land for a while. The Eagles could ask for as much as two first-round picks in return for the quarterback, although a high-price like that would suggest that they want him back.
“Whatever happens you want to know the answer so you can prepare one way or the other,” Kolb said. “Our communication with be fine. … And I’ll be looking to starting here, hopefully.”
He would be a very good insurance policy should Vick – whose style always leaves him susceptible to injury – get hurt during the season. Even after his benching earlier this season, Kolb was needed when Vick injured his ribs. With him starting in the next three games, the Eagles went 2-1.
But if the Eagles bring him back only to hold a clipboard for an entire season they could risk losing him after the season without getting anything in return. If a team was to offer at least a first-round pick in return – and there are at least a dozen teams in need of a starting quarterback – the Eagles may be willing to make a trade.
“Obviously, there’s a chance for a lot of things,” Kolb said. “So I’ll just wait and just talk to these guys and see what happens.”

Buh bye Kolb! Good luck! mlr710
i want to see kolb do well... i don't think people realize how awful it wud've been if he complained about his benching. he's a true class act. but if kolb gets traded who's the backup? kafka? hmm...don't feel great about that keg13
Ha the Egals deserve the ConVick and Klob boy, Both LOSERS to the Core like their Fat Man Leader.... Calabrese10
Thanks Kolb, for helping the Eagles get Gabe Carimi and AAron Williams. Also Kafka looked pretty good in preseason. What qb couldn't do well with the weapons here with an upgraded offensive line. Oh, right, Kevin Kolb couldn't. Later Kevin. Have fun in Tennessee. crohnkiller- Time's yours. Ahem. Cough, cough. This is on me. I've got to do a better job. Every single press conference for 12 years. It's crazy that we keep coming back. When Jeffrey Lurie has is a money making machine. Just almost get there is good enough. Think about all the teams that won a Super Bowl and then the fan based died down. Lurie and Reid are magical marketers. And we all allow it to happen
Egals couldnt get a 6th round pick for Baby arm.... Calabrese10
Bye Kolb. You deserve a coach who knows what the heck he's doing. Kanayd
Kevin Kolb isn’t the answer here. I would love to see what Michael Vick could do behind a GOOD Offensive line. Kolb will be a Ryan Fitzpatrick type, nothing more. shadyone33- THIS.

Adios muchacho. Good luck with that starting attempt. You're a career backup. phillyjhawk
Comment removed.- Kolb also got blown out by one of the worst teams in the AFC as well....Vick beat Indy, NYG twice. Kolb played 3 games but yet had more INTs than Vick for the regular season. I am sure glad you aren't the GM or head coach... ewsavage
- I'm confused. According to his fishing buddy Gargano on WIP, Kolb is the future. He understands the nuances of the game because he's a coach's son. He knows where to go with the ball. He can make the throws and hit people in stride. All the young players love him and rally around him. He killed a rattle snake with his bare hands. Any time he's had a bad performance it's because after four years, he's not accustomed to the speed of the game. Why don't people trust his fishing buddy?
tbone pickins - Kolb is the future, Vick can't stand up to an 18 game season primo

Andy send Kolb to the Redskins for a few high draft picks. Pull the wool over their eyes again.
Vick saved the Eagles season...otherwise the Birds would have been bottom of the NFC East in a re-building season. This year was a bette than expected and anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional and full of BS!!! rawalbe
Peace and hair grease Maurice! madaboutit- that was a poor decision to throw the pass up for grabs with plenty of time on the clock, conVick has a better chance of going back to levenworth then going to the SB..MVP (LOLOLOL)........wolf-out.

Its amazing how many people are so sure Kolb cant play. He's started about 6 or 7 games and has had several very good games. NFL execs who have seen hin on film are interested in obtaining him yet the bozo's on philly.com are so sure he cant play when he's had more good games than bad without the benefit of much experience. I like Vick if they give him an offensive line but lets face it, he's still just really a gimmick qb who will lose his magic in 2 years when he's into his 30's and his legs aren't so quick. Nobody seems to be considering that fact. Even if vick has become a serviceable qb which I think he has, what happens in 2 years when the legs start to go? He's serviceable as long as he has the extra weapon with his legs but he's bound to slow down very soon. Kolb might give someone 10-12 years of high quality qb'ing. Sewellmatt

Vick is not long term answer here-scrambling, rushing QB's don't win Super Bowls. Give Kolb a chance. skaj11- Actually, John Elway and Steve Young have rings....Coaches with at 70-50 pass-run ratio don't win Super Bowls. Neither do defenses who set records for Red Zones touchdown passes... ewsavage
I want to retire and own a yacht.....sorry, Kolb....you can't always get what you want. philly449- conVick has a better chance of going back to levenworth then taking a team to the SB.....wolf-out.

I agree, Kolb deserves to start. Does anybody know how a trade between the Eagles and a CFL team would work? I'm sure Calgary or Edmonton could use Kolb. AreaMan

I understand about the Great White Hope some of our white fans want. However, He had that opp during the game with Dallas and he BLEW IT! So get over your racially motivated feelngs. Without Vick there wouldn't have been a 10-6 season! Mister C
My crystal ball says the Eagles trade Kolb and bring back McNabb as backup. joranan- I love Juqua Parker but Brandon Graham had better be the real deal. If they're going to continue to recruit bit parts at LB, they need a massive impact at DE opposite Trent Cole. thefadd
- Kolb's ceiling is Matt Cassel/Matt Schaub and good luck with that. He's no Philip Rivers. thefadd
- conVick's play has been degressing back to his hotlanta days for the last 7 weeks,he has a better chance of going back to levenworth then going to the SB.....wolf-out.
wolf 4 - Kolb is gone wolfy.....grab a tissue.

alot of teams want KK4 arizona-miami-vikings to name a few,,the BIRDS will make a big mistake to let KK4 go,conVick had a chance to win the game and threw the ball up for grabs with a lot of time left in the game,,conVick is 2-4 in the playoffs with 1:1 pass/int ratio,i don't care if he has big stats against the NFL doormats/non playoff teams of the league(deadskins- etc etc),,KK4 beat the #1 seed Falcons easily,,KK4 is the future of the team for 2011-12-13-14-15,,conVick is a hit away from the IR list and his turnovers were off the charts in the last 7 games..BIG RED don't do it,keep KK4 let conVick have his freedom(LOL)he'll never win a SuperBowl as i stated before conVick has a better chance of going back to levenworth then going to the Superbowl......wolf-out. wolf 4
Which CYO team would you like to play for Kevin? Wiseman6
Kolb would have had to retire due to injuries if he had been playing behind that line all year. Ron
Kolb is this team's only hope to have a strong decade with the skill players they assembled. He has shown he can succeed against the best, he just needs a little game experience, no wild cat, and no being undermined by the head coach to tighten up his game. If they stick with Vick, they are, at best, wild-card rounders the next year or two- if he can stay out of trouble in the off-season, which hasn't happened in years. Then, he will be old, slow and oft-injured (see A. Iverson, basketball career after age 32) and the Eagles will be in no man's land at QB with skill players in their prime. jtj06
Dosen't matter unless this offensive line is upgraded. Reid's gamble with the Andrews Sisters keeps coming back to haunt us. Cole, Justice, Dunlop are not starters. They need to be replaced. Reid's decision to go with Hobbs and Samuel at corner also cost us dearly. Both need to go as well. garcia7- Unless we get a OL as good as Dallas circa 1993, I'd rather have Vick. Even as mobile as Vick is, this OL gave up 50 sacks this year. Kolb would have been sacked 70 times (if he survived) and this team doesn't make the playoffs.
- If you can get away go as fast as you can KK and don't look back. With this O line and coaching philosophy of passing 70% of the time you will get killed here. You still have a chance if you can get with a good team. Don't be like MIKE, get out of here! delcodanno
Kolb has been nothing but a class act even though he effectively lost his job after an injury. The Eagles are best served trading him for a 1st round draft pick, and using that to get another d-back. Trade him to a team that really wants to start him and get a nice draft package. MattPSU
Run Kevin. This team will always be the same. hititwheretheyaint- i have no beef with kolb. he handled his benching with class. however, vick is 10x better them him. face it. the reason we lost we because of david akers.

Get out while you can Kevin Kolb! This team will NEVER win a Super Bowl under Andy Reid. I would hate to see you leave, but Vick will probably be the starter next year (who did have a good year) ... I wouldn't want to be a back-up either if I were you. danpfd
Just like the whole season, Kevin Kolb handled the question well. He was a part of the 10-win season, filling in for Vick and because of his attitude. Hope he stays, but his position is understandable. I do not think Mike Vick will play more than one more year here, because his style of play, encouraged by the coaches, is going to lead to many injuries. If I were Kolb I'd hang on for a year, even on the bench. If I were the Eagles I'd trade Vick this winter. He is not likely to be our QB for even the next 3 years. As good as he is, if they keep him they will eventually lose Kolb, who is ready to start, maybe from 2011-2018. You let go of Kolb only if you can draft someone this spring in picks 33-100 who's going to be better than Kolb by 2012. Vick should be great next year. armchairGM
Kolb was terrible in the last game .move on as a back up somewhere else hannigan- It doesn't matter who is QB if the defense sucks - which it does. The Monk
Kolb is a decent player, but what makes you thing he is worth 2 first round picks? If you said Matt Ryan was traded for 2 first round picks I would not be shocked, but I can't envision any team out there willing to give 2 first rounders for Kolb. MarkinSJ
Vick has two years at most the way he plays. Not enough time to get the OL up to snuff to win a SB. Sign Vick and KK but trade Vick. Lots of teams will take Vick and give us a good return on him. KK can be great QB if given a halfway decent OL and a DL that can get decent field position on e in awhile. Tiller
Kolb will Do well with a pocket passing Style O... But that's NOT Philly's Style , We dictate a Scrambling QB to let the Speedsters Break open , This is the Depth of our Offense... If we were to go back to the Westbrook out of the Backfield type of Attack , Pick up a Huge , Agile Pounding style Back , We could be unstoppable on a 100 yard field, But it wouldn't be a Kolb Type QB to orchestrate it... It would have to be a Vick , Cam Newton , type of Guy.... The Eagles Could cash in on Vick, Keep Kolb and Next year pick up this Kid from Stanford , Luck.... Don't be surprised but you heard it here FIRST!!! GO FLYERS!!! BR from Bryn Mawr- I wish Kolb well, but I don't expect much from him in the NFL. Slow and candy arm...not a good combo. The Monk
It sounds like a trade to me. The Eagles need playmakers on defense, and trading Kolb for a second or third round draft pick would help. Sure, Reid wants to keep both, but that isn't realistic. There are many older quarterbacks that can be used as back-ups. The Eagles need to upgrade their defense through free agency and the draft, and a trade of Kolb is appropriate. RunningTheBases
Apparently Kolb IS one for ultimatums. mattSR
I think Vick and Kolb should both go down to the shelter and pick a couple fido's, put them in the ring like old times and whoever has the dog last standing gets the job. rhodges
The Eagles will never win with Vick actually the Eagles will never win - Vick is over rated and can't take the pressure of the big game -and Reid has no discipline - I mean he can't ever keep his weight off the fat boy. Don't you wish Donovan was back? lol Dallas Mike
Hey Einstein Andrew Luck is staying in school for his senior year. Dallas Mike
Kolb has my vote. We tried the Vick experiment, and it got us no farther than last year. One and done. I would have rather gone 8-8 and given Kolb, a young pocket passer, a year of experience. All we got from Vick was a good highlight film of him running around being flashy. What good did that do us? We just wasted a year when we could have been developing Kolb. All the great QBs are pocket passers. We will never win with a running QB. First it was Randall, then McNabb, now Vick. How long until Eagles managment wakes up and develops a young pocket passer like Kolb? Vick will be a 31 year old QB, and it's just a matter of a year or two until he loses his legs due to age. Then what? Let Vick go and commit to 27-year old Kolb for the long haul. Otherwise, it'll be more of the same next year. eisbchri
