Kolb to start Sunday

POSTED: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 12:56 PM

Kevin Kolb will start against the Cowboys Sunday, according to team sources.

Publicly, the team wouldn't commit, but Kolb said he took the first team repetitions in the morning walk through. With only two days of practice before Sunday's game, that's a pretty good indication that Kolb will be starting in place of Michael Vick, who has a bruised quad and could probably use the rest.

"I’m just preparing like I’m going to be (starting) and that way I’m ready to go if that’s what’s called," Kolb said.

After the loss Tuesday, Kolb and several coaches said they need to clean up the "details" of how they play.

"Really we're just missing by a hair here and there, but that’s the difference between winning and losing football games," Kolb said.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Andy Reid typically makes his decisions on who starts late in the week. Asked about his team's trouble protecting Vick Tuesday, Mornhinweg said there were a variety of problems including the line getting fooled by blitz disguises and blockers getting beat one-on-one. While protection starts with the offensive line, Mornhinweg said responsibility spreads throughout the offense.

"We’ve got to a better job across the board and it was not any one thing," Mornhinweg said.

**********

On defense, Ernie Sims remains the starting weak side linebacker, said defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. He said the team hasn't decided yet whether Dimitri Patterson or Joselio Hanson will start at right cornerback this week.

Akeem Jordan filled in for Sims in nickel situations Tuesday night.

Asked about changing his line up this late, McDermott said, "it has always been and always will be to put our players in a position to succeed and have the best players out there in those situation. If i feel like one defender is a better run defender, then I'll have that defender on the field when I feel that they're going to run the football, and the same goes in the passing game."

Patterson said he has to remain confident and accept whatever decision the coaches make. Hanson has often said he would like to start.

***********

The Eagles signed defensive end Bobby McCray Thursday and released Derrick Burgess. McCray was released by the Saints before the season. He played 12 games for the Saints in 2009 and had 1.5 sacks.

Burgess played sparingly Tuesday night.

"It is a shame Eagles fans won't get to cheer on their dog killer. I mean as long as you can help win games, it doesn't matter you tortured and killed dogs. "
    -------------------
So what if he killed dogs, he didn't kill humans so what's the big deal? i am not saying that what he did was right, but clones get it right. He wasn't just out killing dogs, mostly he financed a dog fighting ring, he wasn't just lined up on a killing line killing dogs and I wish people would get that right. And please, stop acting as if those dogs/were human. i mean I know they say a dog is mans best friend, but come on! they are not human, he didn't kill 6,7 or 8 human beings, he helped to kill (alledgely) 6 or 7 dogs only! and yet most of you clones act as if he was worst than Hitler and his German henchmen using the gas chambers on the Jews in WW2.

If Kolb throws up a 40-spot with 350+ yards passing... and Vick stinks up the joint first half of the playoff game... who starts the 3Q?

AS well as Vick has played this season, there are still people making comments like those above. Makes no sense. Vick deserves to play from beginning to the end even if he stinks up the joint. He has earned that right and for anyone using speculations like the above, well you are no true Eagles/football fan.

If we are resting people in this game, as we should be, then talk of a win may be a little far fetched. However, Note Dallas is a weak pass defense team and Kolb may actually be a better weapon against them then Vick running all over the place and getting hurt before our First playoff game.....We have receivers we need to look at who don't generally get much action. We certainly have people on the bench that need to be looked at....

This the kind of game where occasionally you find a nugget of a player that had been overlooked...

I think even if backups start on the offensive line, the Eagles have a chance in this game because the coaches might actually call a balanced game. And even make sdjustments to what the defense is doing. They're so enchanted with Vick that they've stacked the deck against him with the all-Vick-all-the-time approach to playcalling. No surprise that defensive coordinators are having little trouble finding nice schemes for our new style of predictable offense.

I dont understand the "logic" of starting Kolb vs dallas? Why potentially hurt his trade value with a bad game. He has already been voted NFC player of the week vs the Falcons, who are going to be the number 1 seed in playoffs. What more can be gained, plus what if he gets hurt, no backup for playoffs and possibly no trade value. No, this Dallas game would be a great time to see Kafka. They need to get Kafka ready to be Vicks backup for next season. Kolb made 12MM this season and was supposed to be the starter. He will not be happy being a backup again and his career is being wasted in PHilly.Plus, Andy usually does right by his players and thats why he traded McNabb to Redskins instead of Raiders. Although, McNabb probably would have had better season in Oakland, considering how good their weapons have been. McFadden,Ford,Recce,Bush, thats what McNabb gets for whining. And, the Eagles maybe could have had Nnamdi in the trade. Imagine, Asomaugha and Samuel in our secondary?

Blessed--You are right Vick did want to go with the Carolina Panthers but no way would they have him or any team in the Southern division. They whipped him bad down there. Left him sitting on the bench with his head held down . The first plan was to send him west preferably with the Seahawks where his playing was not well known.

Just because Vick wanted something does not mean he would get it especially in the southern division. I am watching history repeat itself on the field.

we will see a pro style team instead of street football waiting for a big play,KKs style is a traditional QB like a Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers we will see less sacks less fumbles less hits on the QB ball control offense that keeps the defense off the field, this week with KK's quick release and accuracy the team will have decide at the end of the season if they want to go with conVick who is a hit away from the IR list or a pro stle QB with less running yards but more passing yards and less sacks and fumbles,,the BIRDS will have to decide,if conVick can't get this team to the next round the BIRDS front office might let him go,because he is reverting back to his Atlanta ways and who knows what will happen with him over the next 3 months off,who ever has him needs a private eye to follow him around IE-(last year's cake face party)shoot out...he's not worth the money he's 31 running back playing QB were back to a 31 QB that can't last a season or a 26 year old QB the has a quick release and does not take hits or sacks..who is the future 2011-12-13-14-15..BIRDS 37 COWGIRLS 27...wolf.

Godfather Reid picked Vick because half his line stinks and Vick could dazzle teams rushes. Vick still carries the ball loose his happy feet are a little slower against the better defenses.

Kolb will do fine v the Cowgirls. once the off-season dust setttles, The Birds will be wise to keep him as the upcoming 18 game schedule will be even tougher on QB's and he is still young with low mileage.

Marty- How about taking the blame for once again forgetting about the run, and not using screen passes to neutralize the blitz.

Good for Kolb. He has kept his mouth shut and VIck has gotten pounded and needs a respite. I think Andy has decided he wins or loses with Vick, but I wonder if he can last another year.

..no they don't. but you gotta play it smart. our recs need to be runnin routes til they pass out. avant and desean ran awful routes most the game. i still blame a good portion of the l on the coaches. again, they put together a very arrogant and short sighted game plan. completely disrepected the vikes and they paid for it. reid watching vick trying to go no huddle on 1 leg was crazy. heck with egos. this is a team sport. vick had a bad game. it happens. but to have him playing that poorly..and w/reid not running the ball and injured made no sense to me. pull'em and the eagles win. bottom line.

I'd like to think that Reid is suckering in our opponents to rely on blitzing to stop the offense come playoff time and will then unleash some screens and runs to counter them. I'm not holding my breath though.

Kolb should be the only backup playing in this game. The starters dont deserve rest for their pathetic performance.

well, OK, even if it means losing the wild card round with the typical banged-up crew despite having the chance to rest them and get a head on the competition. We fans in Philly care only about what the starters 'deserve' anyway, and not about winning the Lombardi. No wait...

By the way, we've already been playing the backups on the D for weeks, or haven't you noticed?

...if only mcreid had the stones and the brain todo this early 4th vs minn. you'd have the 11-4 record. kolb gets the rust off, kolb showcases for his possible departure, eagles still alive for 1st round bye, kolb beats s mcgee regardles. and a battered and awful vick gets a min 12 days or so rest and maybe longer with a bye.

Hey Ferrel we had to rest Vick and put in our hog killer instead. I'm sure those wild pigs don't mind getting stabbed in the heart with a 12" knife. Go eat a big steak and imagine you're not a hypocrite.

Sorry for the typo but I refer to Vick. This to me is a classic example of better play through chemistry.

We should all look at VICK as just another ball player and not some cure for the team. They have a huge number of holes to fill and he is just a piece of the puzzle and a time bomb waiting to go off. If the team trades anyone it should be VICK. His personality and history are too fluid to trust.

This actually helps the Eagles a lot; with the Eagles line, Vick could go down at anytime once the playoffs start, get Kolb some reps so he is ready to go in on a moment's notice, Vick has been getting DESTROYED this year, every hit he takes could be the one that knocks him out of the game, I wince every time I see a defender bearing down on him unblocked.

Sitting Vick was a foregone conclusion. He needs to rest up for this playoff run, he has taken a beating. (looking forward to seeing my man, Kevin Kolb play anyways) "However! However!", unless they're nursing injuries, (ie., DJax, Asante, and any other player), then start the starters. The O line still needs to develop some kind of consistency due to all of the shuffling w/ injured bodies this season. The D is young, and has yet to establish themselves as a playoff ready defense. Give them this game to try and gain some momentum going into the playoffs, they're gonna need it. (Oh, Cole could use the rest as well. The man has gone full bore on just about every defensive snap this year)...despite the clunker on Tuesday, I still like our chances, and will go on record to say- I guarantee the Eagles win the Wildcard Round at the Linc. Look for a lot of Shady in that game, and possibly MM calling the no-huddle early and often. This is still the same offense that can put up points on ANY defense in the league. AND, I might be among the minority amongst the fans, but I have faith in McDermott to come up w/ the right scheme to at least hold the opposing offense to less points then 'The Young Guns'. we'll see we'll see. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!

Surprised he didn't copy/paste it here too. The lad is getting lazy...or maybe he's busy cleaning his floor space at the corner bar so he can pass out on a clean spot tomorrow night?

Nice chance for Kolb to be showcased for potential trade partners, but if all the starters are rested, who will he have to throw to? The starting wideouts would be Riley Cooper and Chad Hall.

Boy here comes all the lunatics. Ferrel must be on release from the nut house for the holidays. The rest of the maggets well keep talking you forgot who got you the NFC East Championship, and it was not the defense or the o line it was in spite of those things. I hope Kolb can win this game Sunday they paid him 12 mil he should be able to beat the cowgirls but even if he losers on this site will blame Reid, Marty and everybody but him. We know what this is all about and it is not about dogs, that stuff is so old and tired even PETA is tired of hearing about it but. So you can choose to go to the Superbowl with Vick or go watch the playoffs with your precious Kolb. My real wish is that Marty and Mike could both go to the 49ers and they would be in the playoffs for the next 8 years and they would have fans that appreciate what they bring to the game and the excitement. Whatever happens from here on for Mike will be good and you losers will never understand what you missed by hating. Get better Vick and lets win this SB and then ask Mr. Lurie if you can play where the fans will appreciate you. Another team Vikings would love to get their hands on you I bet the o line would love to block for you and AD would be in heaven and Philly can have Kolb the gwh they have always wanted but never works out for them. Praying for you health Mr. Vick. NFC East Champs that is what you brought this team and you can bring the SB and move on these ungrateful people do not deserve your talent.

Blessed8251, I take exception to your opinion that us fans are ungrateful people who do not deserve a player's talent. On the contrary, Michael Vick has been accepted by the majority of Eagles fans. Vick, the Eagles organization, and the Philly media have acknowledged this fact. I'll go even further and say, based on percentages, there is a greater amount of Eagles fans that have accepted Michael Vick despite his past, as opposed to the rest of the country. Having Vick as our QB is just one more thing some opposing fans have tried to use as a negative against us Philly fans...So I say, to all Vick fans, be thankful that he is an Eagle, where he has been allowed to flourish as a QB. He could of been traded to the Panthers where Vick himself suggested he wanted to go in the offseason.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 1:13 PM, 01/02/2011
Of course you're accepting of him, because he's played well. If he was on another team, or playing terribly, you'd be playing the dog killer card too. Don't kid yourself. And really, Vick isn't another reason to hate on some of the Philly fans. Haven't some of the Philly fans done enough to bring on that venom?

Well you certainly weren't "blessed" w/ any perception of reality if you think the hippies out in SF would be more accepting of Vick than the Eagles fans and the city of Philadelphia have been. Also, McNabb brought this city many NFC East titles, so don't act like Vick is some kind of savior for doing the same when the offense he has is much more talented than any of the ones McNabb played with (except for '04 w/ TO and Westbrook).

Let's face it, with this 'O' line Vick is roadkill-in-waiting so starting Klob will better prepare him for next season when Vick signs with the deadskins or the foggyniners. In the offseason, Klob should do a lot of sprint work and learn to duck & cover.

I have a theory on the Kolb situation at the start of the season--perhaps Reid had to make Kolb the starter more out of protocol than anything else. At the end of last season, Reid may not have been able to gauge just how effective Vick could be as the quarterback. The feeling was, Kolb could manage the offense, move them downfield, perhaps not with long bombs like the "BabyArm" troll wants all the time, but efficiently enough to get the team into position to score. Then he got hurt, and Vick had to step in. This start gives Kolb a chance to re-establish himself as an effective, though admittedly very different quarterback. Vick gets a rest and a chance to heal up, hopefully, and we'll see if Kolb can get the ball to Jackson, and company. Now--this is something that's been brought up a lot; why doesn't McCoy get more carries? Yes, I agree--Reid has to balance out the run/pass attack, and McCoy is a solid weapon, he should be used more. In any case, the Eagles are in the playoffs, but they must not think the Cowboys are a pushover, like they obviously assumed the Vikings would be. MN and Dal. were/are playing for pride. The Eagles better appeal to their own, or they're going to stagger into the playoffs and get rolled in Round One.
