Kolb to start Sunday

POSTED: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 12:56 PM

Kevin Kolb will start against the Cowboys Sunday, according to team sources.

Publicly, the team wouldn't commit, but Kolb said he took the first team repetitions in the morning walk through. With only two days of practice before Sunday's game, that's a pretty good indication that Kolb will be starting in place of Michael Vick, who has a bruised quad and could probably use the rest.

"I’m just preparing like I’m going to be (starting) and that way I’m ready to go if that’s what’s called," Kolb said.

After the loss Tuesday, Kolb and several coaches said they need to clean up the "details" of how they play.

"Really we're just missing by a hair here and there, but that’s the difference between winning and losing football games," Kolb said.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Andy Reid typically makes his decisions on who starts late in the week. Asked about his team's trouble protecting Vick Tuesday, Mornhinweg said there were a variety of problems including the line getting fooled by blitz disguises and blockers getting beat one-on-one. While protection starts with the offensive line, Mornhinweg said responsibility spreads throughout the offense.

"We’ve got to a better job across the board and it was not any one thing," Mornhinweg said.

On defense, Ernie Sims remains the starting weak side linebacker, said defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. He said the team hasn't decided yet whether Dimitri Patterson or Joselio Hanson will start at right cornerback this week.

Akeem Jordan filled in for Sims in nickel situations Tuesday night.

Asked about changing his line up this late, McDermott said, "it has always been and always will be to put our players in a position to succeed and have the best players out there in those situation. If i feel like one defender is a better run defender, then I'll have that defender on the field when I feel that they're going to run the football, and the same goes in the passing game."

Patterson said he has to remain confident and accept whatever decision the coaches make. Hanson has often said he would like to start.

The Eagles signed defensive end Bobby McCray Thursday and released Derrick Burgess. McCray was released by the Saints before the season. He played 12 games for the Saints in 2009 and had 1.5 sacks.

Burgess played sparingly Tuesday night.

If Kolb throws up a 40-spot with 350+ yards passing... and Vick stinks up the joint first half of the playoff game... who starts the 3Q?

Vick plays the entire playoff game even if he throws five picks or gets hurt.

It is a shame Eagles fans won't get to cheer on their dog killer. I mean as long as you can help win games, it doesn't matter you tortured and killed dogs.

I regret to mention that on Tuesday evening was holding his head the same way that LT did when on the bench at GIANT GAMES. Nothing else can explain his terrible play. Sorry but reality screams for this conclusion. Remember LT played like SUPERMAN, also

Win? Who Cares? Who wrote this garbage? You rest all the starters and expect a win? Id start Kafka for the 2nd half and play all third stringers see what ya got. As for Kolb he should do whatever he can to get off this team.

I have a theory on the Kolb situation at the start of the season--perhaps Reid had to make Kolb the starter more out of protocol than anything else. At the end of last season, Reid may not have been able to gauge just how effective Vick could be as the quarterback. The feeling was, Kolb could manage the offense, move them downfield, perhaps not with long bombs like the "BabyArm" troll wants all the time, but efficiently enough to get the team into position to score. Then he got hurt, and Vick had to step in. This start gives Kolb a chance to re-establish himself as an effective, though admittedly very different quarterback. Vick gets a rest and a chance to heal up, hopefully, and we'll see if Kolb can get the ball to Jackson, and company. Now--this is something that's been brought up a lot; why doesn't McCoy get more carries? Yes, I agree--Reid has to balance out the run/pass attack, and McCoy is a solid weapon, he should be used more. In any case, the Eagles are in the playoffs, but they must not think the Cowboys are a pushover, like they obviously assumed the Vikings would be. MN and Dal. were/are playing for pride. The Eagles better appeal to their own, or they're going to stagger into the playoffs and get rolled in Round One.

Let's face it, with this 'O' line Vick is roadkill-in-waiting so starting Klob will better prepare him for next season when Vick signs with the deadskins or the foggyniners. In the offseason, Klob should do a lot of sprint work and learn to duck & cover.
To JIM IAQUINTO: Who was holding his head & what conclusion did you reach from that? BTW, how does reality "scream"?

Boy here comes all the lunatics. Ferrel must be on release from the nut house for the holidays. The rest of the maggets well keep talking you forgot who got you the NFC East Championship, and it was not the defense or the o line it was in spite of those things. I hope Kolb can win this game Sunday they paid him 12 mil he should be able to beat the cowgirls but even if he losers on this site will blame Reid, Marty and everybody but him. We know what this is all about and it is not about dogs, that stuff is so old and tired even PETA is tired of hearing about it but. So you can choose to go to the Superbowl with Vick or go watch the playoffs with your precious Kolb. My real wish is that Marty and Mike could both go to the 49ers and they would be in the playoffs for the next 8 years and they would have fans that appreciate what they bring to the game and the excitement. Whatever happens from here on for Mike will be good and you losers will never understand what you missed by hating. Get better Vick and lets win this SB and then ask Mr. Lurie if you can play where the fans will appreciate you. Another team Vikings would love to get their hands on you I bet the o line would love to block for you and AD would be in heaven and Philly can have Kolb the gwh they have always wanted but never works out for them. Praying for you health Mr. Vick. NFC East Champs that is what you brought this team and you can bring the SB and move on these ungrateful people do not deserve your talent.

Blessed8251, I take exception to your opinion that us fans are ungrateful people who do not deserve a player's talent. On the contrary, Michael Vick has been accepted by the majority of Eagles fans. Vick, the Eagles organization, and the Philly media have acknowledged this fact. I'll go even further and say, based on percentages, there is a greater amount of Eagles fans that have accepted Michael Vick despite his past, as opposed to the rest of the country. Having Vick as our QB is just one more thing some opposing fans have tried to use as a negative against us Philly fans...So I say, to all Vick fans, be thankful that he is an Eagle, where he has been allowed to flourish as a QB. He could of been traded to the Panthers where Vick himself suggested he wanted to go in the offseason.
