Kolb negates extension report

POSTED: Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 7:23 PM

Kevin Kolb went on 610-WIP today and confirmed that he and the Eagles did not discuss a contract extension as was reported last week.

"We haven't even talked to them as far as I know," Kolb told WIP host Howard Eskin. "That totally blew me away when that was reported because that was obviously false.

"I don't even talk to my agent [Jeff Nalley] that much about it because ultimately it doesn't have anything to do with what we say. So we're kind of just sitting back right now and letting things iron out. We know there's still some time here and I'm sure there'll be a phone call some time in the near future or a meeting. But as of right now we're just going to let it iron out and have faith that the right decision's going to be made."

On Friday, a team source told The Inquirer that the report, authored by Gary Cobb, was "completely 100 percent false." A league source later verified this response from the Eagles. Cobb wrote on his Web site, gcobb.com, that he stood by his report.

Audio of Kolb's interview was posted on the WIP Web site. Selections from the interview were also posted on the team's site.

Kolb, backup to Donovan McNabb, is entering the last year of his contract. So, too, are McNabb and Michael Vick. The Eagles' quarterback situation remains one of the most discussed topics this NFL off-season. Coach Andy Reid said after the season that McNabb was his starting quarterback for next year. Of course, that hasn't stopped numerous trade rumors involving all three quarterbacks.

Kolb hasn't hid the fact that he wants to start.

"I wish that I could have played last year," Kolb said. "With that being said I'm going to wish it even more this year so it's tough but I know it's an even harder situation for the Eagles. My gosh, there's three of us back there that can play so I'm going to keep their feelings in mind and try to remain positive no matter what happens."

Kolb, about to enter his fourth season, said that he wants to remain with the Eagles.

"I feel like I fit in this system so well," he said. "And not just the system, but the coaching staff and the players and the personnel all the way around, even on the other side of the building with the business side and all that. I just feel like our personalities really fit well together and I look forward to taking over this thing one day and working with those guys. So I would never wish myself to be anywhere else."

Kolb also spoke about his "rapport" with the young offensive skill players.

"I think there's a great rapport with myself and the rest of the team and especially the young guys," Kolb said. "The rookie camps that lead up to the main camp, I've always done those. ... So I have those guys in right away and that's helping with the learning process for them. And when you do that with somebody I think they have a respect for you and they look at you for some wisdom. I've heard that there's a lot of quarterbacks around the league -- even guys that have been in the league 10-12 years -- they still go to those camps so they can continue to build that rapport."

McNabb attended every minicamp last spring except for rookie camp. The only veterans that show up for those practices are usually the ones in danger of not making the team.

5MustStay what planet are you on? Where did Mcnabb throw for 4800 yards last year, in your Madden08 season? He has NEVER thrown for more than 4000 yards in a season. Oh and what has Rodgers done? I don't know, he's started all 32 games since he's taken over, and just threw for some 4500 yds with 30 TDs and only 7 picks this year despite being sacked a record 50 times playing behind maybe the worst O-line (sound like a familiar excuse?) since the Detroit Lions of Barry Sanders' heyday. I'll take Aaron Rodgers over Mcnabb 100 times out of 100

I am torn. I have long been a McNabb fan, but McNabb DID NOT have a great year. Looking at Don's work since 2004, he hasn't even been all that special. It is a stretch to put him in the top 10 of the NFL anymore... and even more of a stretch to put him in the top 5. Tommy Lawlor did a great write-up of all of this over on "The Scouts Notebook" - http://www.scoutsnotebook.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=11882 - To be honest, I feel like I have more of an issue with Kolb than Tommy does. I'd like to see a couple more games out of Kevin where he throws more TDs than INTs. Going back to McNabb, we've seen a lot of non-special QBs win the Super Bowl over the years (with enough support from the other components of the team: O-line, run game, skill players, STs, defense, COACHING) that McNabb should be enough to win a Super Bowl... if surrounded by the right components. I just sincerely doubt, right now, the capability of Andy Reid to put it all together. I've often said that McNabb has a better chance of winning the Super Bowl on another team than Andy Reid does of winning it at all... anywhere. That's probably still true. If Kolb ends up being a lesser QB than McNabb, perhaps it ends up exposing Reid for what he really is: a pretty good coach, but not one capable of winning the big game. So... let's move on from McNabb to Kolb and figure out what we really have here. I'll still root for the Eagles, first... but I'll root for McNabb, too... as long as he's not playing for the Giants, Redskins, or Cowboys... and as long as he's not playing against the Eagles.

I forgot to mention that I hope McNabb succeeds this year, but on another team. I've watched too many games over too many years and the record needs to be changed. Eagles cannot continue with the same Qb at the helm and honestly expect any intelligent fan to support it. I want to see him succeed in a different system, not the WC offense style. Kolb, I feel is suited for it and that is why I want to see him now and not 2 yrs from now.

Interesting how he talked to Eskin. Sounds like the team didn't like that it got out so they had Kolb go talk to their PR guy on 610 to spin the story the way they wanted.

Kolb is the future. And the future might be now. We know what we are going to get with McNabb and how far he will take the team. Kolb has more upside. He might be a bust but one never knows until he gets a chance to play.

Also whats the worst that can happen we lose in the first round of the playoffs or dont make the playoff whats the diff!!! We lost in the first round with Donovan so what the diff if we lose with Kolb in the first round this up coming season cuz if Kevin is the starter its gonna take at least this season for him to get winning!!! Love Donovan but, it is what it is with him at this point!!! Sometimes a marriage runs its course and ends in divorce!!!
