Kolb: "That wasn't quite ... sharp"

POSTED: Saturday, August 28, 2010, 12:29 AM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kevin Kolb got his first taste of what it's like to face the media following his first below-average outing as the Eagles' starting quarterback. The Eagles beat the Chiefs, 20-17, Friday night but that's about the best thing you can say about the performance -- especially about Kolb and the offense.

Kolb completed just 11 of 25 passes for 103 yards and tossed his first interception of the preseason. He's yet to throw a touchdown in more than six quarters of preseason play and hasn't guided the offense to a red zone touchdown in five trips inside the 20-yard line.

"That wasn't quite as sharp as we would have liked it, for sure," Kolb said after the game. "There are a lot of details we have to clean up. There needs to be some special attention to it, starting with myself. The shining light of the whole thing is that it's 0-0 come here in two weeks and we start fresh."

Eagles coach Andy Reid wasn't as critical of his young quarterback.

"I think this was great work for him," Reid said. "I think there were some positive situations. He did some good things early and we just got to keep it rolling and give him opportunities. Everybody had a little piece of that pie."

Reid was asked if a young first-team offense, one that was supposed to be explosive, should be discouraged after three relatively unproductive preseason games.

"They shouldn't be discouraged," Reid said. "They seemed upbeat and positive. They just got to keep working."

Kolb was without his best receiver, DeSean Jackson, who left with a neck strain. Reid said Jackson should be fine and that he took his No. 1 receiver out for precautionary reasons. Kolb also constantly had a blitzing Chiefs defender in his mug.

"They brought a few extra things there and a couple of them were me," Kolb said, "and couple of them, you know, we could have gotten."

In another injury note, defensive end Trent Cole had a sprained ankle. Reid said an X-ray was negative, but that Cole was having an MRI Saturday. The end was seen walking in the locker room with a rather severe limp.

Anyone who has watched Kolb and Kafka play, and doesn't think that Kafka has the higher "ceiling" in this league is a complete dope. KK's chuck and duck throw downfield for a pick was classic. I hope isn't planning on buying property in the area, wasting his time if he is.

@vincemcd, Since you went there, lets not forget that was a game where McNabb should not have been put in the position to throw the ball 70% of the game. He was not to long removed from a shredded leg in which AR had no problem putting him back out on the field to play on in order to when that game against the Cardinals. Chilly started out running the ball effectively against the Bucs, AR couldn't stomach that so he took over playcalling and hung #5 out to dry with no WRs. Bottom line he should have stuck with running game to keep an over aggressive D like the Bucs on its heals, its called a balanced attack that would have spared a QB not at 100% from having to make awkward throws to dud WRs. AR should have been sent packing after 2006, now thats realtruth.

@Tom Crymes, It's been 3yrs, it didn't take Sanchez or the kid in Detroit (before he got hurt) but 3 -4 preseason games to find rythm. Eagles fans have been watching the slow death of this team and now its in its final gasps. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion, need I continue, Naaaaaaaaaaaaahhh you get the point.

realtruth....you can't have a name like that when you make statements like "McNabb played without a 1,2 or 3 reciever" for 11 years. Realtruth would just say, it was a lousy game last night. McNabb had a great career here, and in that career he has numerous lousy games. Loved McNabb, but don't forget the telegraphed interceptions that made Rhonde Barber's career in the championship game. McNabb was just terrible that day. On many others, he was fantastic. That's realtruth.

@wolf 4, Lets re-open that case. You mention Aikman & Marino both were kinda on the fence about Kolb, still can't find any of your mysterious Young comments as far a Baldinger and Didinger they are both jokes especially Baldy. Most of his quick releases have been off target or nearly INTs. If you stop buying into the media hype and take off the Kolbgoggles you might be able to see whats in front of your eyes, a subpar QB and his subpar coach heading for disaster, full steam ahead.

Wolf, if you're comparing Kolb to Manning, you've closed your own case. No matter who said what in the OFF-SEASON, Kolb has had anything but a quick release in the 3 games so far. If you want to discount those games, be my guest.

jimmyj-you don't know anything about the QB position, you must have been a lineman on your JV team, the NFL's best analysts (aikman-young-marino-baldinger-didinger-etc-etc) say Kolb has a quick release he proved in real NFL games PRESEASON games doesnot mean anything for starting QB's the colts (p.manning)are 4-20 in the last 6 preseasons...caseclosed......wolf.

He's a young QB. He's got to find his rhythm. It'll come in time. You just can't expect him to be in top form out of the gate. He did well in his two games last year.

Gonna be another tough year for an Eagles' fan like me living in Dallas. Nothing worse than a potential 5 game losing streak to the cowboys.

In a post last week that nobody read (no it didn't break my heart) I asked what was wrong with Kolb's throwing motion. So last night I saw it again. Unlike the advertising from wolf and briandawkins20, Kolb has a very slow release. I don't think we can put the blame solely on the O-line. Kolb is taking forever to get the ball out of there against defenses that are just average. Furthermore he is jumping out of the pocket even before it sets up. Where is the guy who was sold to us as a pocket passer? I like the mobility which is better than I thought, but passing game has no rhythmn at all.

So Wolf4 you think because Vick came in for two or three plays is the reason Kolb had a bad game LOL..............................yeah right, I guess any excuse is better than none.

Oh I get it when it's kk(a white qb) it's "are you concerned about the o-line", "his #1 wr is hurt", "or it's just preseason". When it's Vick(a black qb) it's "he has to make better decision", "he has delvelop more into a pocket passer instead of relying on his legs"(If kk running for his life what you think Vick doing, how do you go through your reads with no time?), "or he's athlete not a qb" (Uh?). Don't bye into the media's propaganda!!! Now they asked am I concerned about the o-line, you idiots I'm concerned about kk he hasn't scored one time in 3 games are you serious?

what rhythm got broken? he was 6/19 0tds 1int before the last drive... I'd wanna break that rhythm all day. Wolf we don't have super secret plays that only we know about. Its execution you dolt. Kolb looked like a High School spread option QB tryin to read an NFL Defense last night. He has to identify the blitz and adjust protection, its not just on the OL. That will improve with game planning, but facts are facts. This team is closer to 6-10 than 9-7. As long as there is progression thats not a huge deal. But Kolb D riders need to give it a rest until he starts producing victories in the regular season. This team will be carried by the D if they have a winning record.

jeff,KK's going to have game like that, thank god it's preseason, main thing is the Win,,Big Fred has to stop breaking KK's rhythm with conVick coming in on every other play,KK also lost his #1 reciever on the first play of the game, and maclin dropped four passes and the line has more holes the swiss cheese, but no excuses..they are holding alot of plays back until the season starts,KK will be fine when the season starts, shock the big bad packers at home in the season opener.....wolf.

He has such a great rapport with the younger players. So accurate. We aren't missing a beat. Green Bay is gonna beat us by 30. Hope everyone is payin attention to what contender looks like. It'll be one of the few times we see one all year. 7-9

Kolb looked terrible, lets be honest. No way to sugar coat this. You wanted McNabb gone and you got your wish. KK is a Y2K version of Bobby Hoying. I'm Opressed. Coach out!

"Kolb was without his best receiver, DeSean Jackson, who left with a neck strain." AND... McNabb spent 11 yrs here without a #1,2 or 3 WR and he made lemonade out of lemons. "Kolb also constantly had a blitzing Chiefs defender in his mug.", You are kidding right, this is preseason that was vanilla pressure a best what do think it will look like when the season really starts. My point is lets stop with the excuses for the guy, he 3yrs into the system, they've given him some of the best talent out there and he still looks like he did on day one after the draft. Lets face facts the FO got this one wrong, and when you think about it this isn't the first time for them. KK= wasted 3yrs.

The O-line looks pretty bad, but Kolb also runs to his right too quickly. He should start throwing the ball away or he's not gonna last very long.

hey - its a rebuilding year, lets face it. on the upside they are young, which means if they can get some success, it could snowball into some swagger, so it is hard to predict. if you made me pick, i'd have to say - realistically they are a 5 win team. but if you think about the opposite end of the spectrum they could be playoff caliber. the key will be injuries and confidence. if they start thinking and believing that they are mediocre, the certainly will be. this is going to be a roller coaster year, but hey, let's face it, that is normal for us. maybe not normal for the past 8 years, but in the long run, since our most recent championship about 50 years ago, this year will be normal. i'll be happy with 8-8. 9-7 could get us in. stranger things have happened. jamal jackson's return is a big factor in this whole mess.

Kevin Kolb, master of the understatement if nothing else. That was a singular unimpressive showing and as far as being his first below avaerage performance as the starting QB there really haven't been any ABOVE average performances at all.

Drop 3 games from preseason. Injuries for most teams are mounting. With 2 more reg season games, rosters should be expanded to 58 players at least, and if players get hurt, it will be for a real game at least. Some positives, right side of line and center caused much of the offenses problems, Kolb had little time, and we could have called a few more runs. But the injuries are ruining teams chances before the season starts. Hope the guy from KC is o.k., as well as Trent. Desean got his bell rung/stiff neck, should be fine. I seen him take harder hits this preseason then most of last year. Also, what is up with officiating? Horrible so far, from all the games I watched. The whole ref in the backfield really is a bad idea, and strange for a league that wants more scoring. But then the ref moves to defensive side under 2 mins? Not working out, so far too many penalties, yet missed calls as well.
