Kolb: "That wasn't quite ... sharp"
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kevin Kolb got his first taste of what it's like to face the media following his first below-average outing as the Eagles' starting quarterback. The Eagles beat the Chiefs, 20-17, Friday night but that's about the best thing you can say about the performance -- especially about Kolb and the offense.
Kolb completed just 11 of 25 passes for 103 yards and tossed his first interception of the preseason. He's yet to throw a touchdown in more than six quarters of preseason play and hasn't guided the offense to a red zone touchdown in five trips inside the 20-yard line.
"That wasn't quite as sharp as we would have liked it, for sure," Kolb said after the game. "There are a lot of details we have to clean up. There needs to be some special attention to it, starting with myself. The shining light of the whole thing is that it's 0-0 come here in two weeks and we start fresh."
Eagles coach Andy Reid wasn't as critical of his young quarterback.
"I think this was great work for him," Reid said. "I think there were some positive situations. He did some good things early and we just got to keep it rolling and give him opportunities. Everybody had a little piece of that pie."
Reid was asked if a young first-team offense, one that was supposed to be explosive, should be discouraged after three relatively unproductive preseason games.
"They shouldn't be discouraged," Reid said. "They seemed upbeat and positive. They just got to keep working."
Kolb was without his best receiver, DeSean Jackson, who left with a neck strain. Reid said Jackson should be fine and that he took his No. 1 receiver out for precautionary reasons. Kolb also constantly had a blitzing Chiefs defender in his mug.
"They brought a few extra things there and a couple of them were me," Kolb said, "and couple of them, you know, we could have gotten."
In another injury note, defensive end Trent Cole had a sprained ankle. Reid said an X-ray was negative, but that Cole was having an MRI Saturday. The end was seen walking in the locker room with a rather severe limp.
realtruth....you can't have a name like that when you make statements like "McNabb played without a 1,2 or 3 reciever" for 11 years. Realtruth would just say, it was a lousy game last night. McNabb had a great career here, and in that career he has numerous lousy games. Loved McNabb, but don't forget the telegraphed interceptions that made Rhonde Barber's career in the championship game. McNabb was just terrible that day. On many others, he was fantastic. That's realtruth. vincemcd
@Tom Crymes, It's been 3yrs, it didn't take Sanchez or the kid in Detroit (before he got hurt) but 3 -4 preseason games to find rythm. Eagles fans have been watching the slow death of this team and now its in its final gasps. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion, need I continue, Naaaaaaaaaaaaahhh you get the point. realtruth
@vincemcd, Since you went there, lets not forget that was a game where McNabb should not have been put in the position to throw the ball 70% of the game. He was not to long removed from a shredded leg in which AR had no problem putting him back out on the field to play on in order to when that game against the Cardinals. Chilly started out running the ball effectively against the Bucs, AR couldn't stomach that so he took over playcalling and hung #5 out to dry with no WRs. Bottom line he should have stuck with running game to keep an over aggressive D like the Bucs on its heals, its called a balanced attack that would have spared a QB not at 100% from having to make awkward throws to dud WRs. AR should have been sent packing after 2006, now thats realtruth. realtruth

Anyone who has watched Kolb and Kafka play, and doesn't think that Kafka has the higher "ceiling" in this league is a complete dope. KK's chuck and duck throw downfield for a pick was classic. I hope isn't planning on buying property in the area, wasting his time if he is. somertonspartan
