Kolb: "It's not frustrating"

POSTED: Thursday, May 28, 2009, 3:25 PM

Last week, Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb was asked about the prospects of having to sit for another season -- and possibly more -- behind Donovan McNabb. The third-year pro answered as you would hope a would-be starting QB would answer such a question, but it created a mini-firestorm on what had to be a slow news day.

To recap, he said: "I don't know if 'frustrating' is the word, but I'm getting a little bit antsy." Frustrating, though, was the word he used when he asked about the possibility of McNabb getting a contract extenstion beyond the two years left on his deal. "That'll be frustrating," Kolb said. "But, shoot, what are my options? I'll just come out here and execute and show them I can be the guy they want me to be."

Kolb, no dummy, was asked again today if busting his tail off in practice and not seeing the fruits of his labor come game time was frustrating [There's that word again.] "It’s not frustrating," he said. "I’m getting better here every day. I got better today than I was yesterday. So as long as I keep that mentality, I’ll be fine."

How's he getting better?

"Just being smooth out there," Kolb said. "One thing is being natural with it. OK, you get coached, you get coached, you get coached, and you’re trying to do everything right, and then work that back into your natural playing mode. And that’s what I’m trying to do now is not be a robot and get out there and play through my natural ability and let the two mesh together and that’s when you’re going to be your best."

One other Kolb tidbit: The Texas native is a pretty serious fisherman and has been doing it competitively for the last two years. He was in a tournament last week. So how did he do? "Not very good, but that’s fishing," Kolb said. "You never know when you’re going to go out there and get skunked." Sounds a little like playing quarterback.

Check tomorrow's Inquirer for more on Kolb.

What do you want the guy to say? "I like sitting here collecting a check and joking with the other benchies"? He wants to play. Good.

Kevin just keep practicing ur holding technique, ur only going to get work when super5 puts up 50, and Andy won't let you throw anyway. I bet Koy Detmer, today!, throws the ball better than you, ouch!

Can't win a superbowl throwing INTs in the endzone. TD-INT ratio of 0-4, 144 yards passing, 21.8 passer rating. This versus a five time pro-bowler with third highest yards and completions in a SB. I'm not going to label Kolb a bust, but every time he's on the field he embarrasses himself.

"When BIG RED gives Kevin Kolb the job, he will win a Super Bowl within 3 years..." Oh my god...this chick gets dumber and dumber as the posts progress. Loserwolf, if you EVER pay attention to the way Andy Reid works, he is SUPPORTIVE OF DONOVAN MCNABB and if you EVER pay attention to the way Andy Reid operates he often allows DONOVAN MCNABB to call shots, design plays....oh what's the use, Donovan McNabb is still black therefore Lonewolf still HATES HIM!!!! By the way, I don't hate Kolb; I think he is a good guy with a good heart and passion for the game, he just isn't that good at it and is half the athlete number 5 is. PERIOD!!!!!!

Curious that there can be such high expectations for a guy that has shown nothing on the field as of yet and can't take the job away from another guy who is held in such low esteem despite having a longer time to learn than the guy he wants to take the job from. Also curious that the non-SB winning head coach who gets such high praise drafted the guy that is held in such low esteem and keeps the guy that "will win the SB within 3 years" on the bench yet never gets any criticism. Odd, no?. Inquiring minds need to know.

Geez, you reporters really need to get a grip on reality. Too little factual information and too much speculation, interpretations of people's "feelings" and over-analyzing of a word here or there. Quit trying to create controversies that don't exist. If you want to sell papers, come up with intelligent, insightful writing instead of gimmicky, artificially created "controversies". By the way, did loonywolf actually accuse someone else of "singing that same tired old song"? Now THAT is comedy! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I would understand it if when he did play he played well, but everytime he is thrown in the lineup, more terrible things happen then when number 5 is in the lineup.

The guy is a walking Pick 6...I don't understand how we would be better off with Klob (intentional). What has he shown in these 3 years? If he is soo great, why can't he TAKE the "choker" as most of you refer to the Starting QB's job away. HUH??? I don't get it, someone please enlighten me, please.....

Kevin Kolb? Winning the Super Bowl within 3 years? "Hahahahahahahahahahaha oh ha, hee hee, ho ho, ha ha. And I thought *my* jokes were bad..." Eagles will draft a QB, probably next year. They know a pick-six guy when they see one. Kolb will never be more than a semi-adequate NFL backup. A Kyle Boller, without the arm strength. He might become a serviceable starter, but he will not be winning any Super Bowls for anyone. Birds will probably draft a QB of the future again next year and hopefully they'll choose a little more wisely.

Commenters on Philly.com actually manage to give the entire city of Philadelphia, and certainly Philadelphia sports fans, an even worse reputation than they already have. That's no small feat on the internet. Can you maniacs believe, it it possible for you to grasp, that on other Web sites, commenters are capable of engaging in intelligent, civilized discourse? Can you imagine?

I think lonepup is kevin kolb's mom! Only a mother could love that sorry excuse for a NFL QB. This will be fun to watch this year as McNabb leads the Eagles to the SB...and wins.

Name a team in the NFL that went from ProBowl QB to another ProBowl QB as his successor. 49ers are the only one I can think of from Montana to Young. The chances of Kolb being a player are as possible as Reid losing 200 lbs.

That Kolb prediction will be as accurate as the one that had DM gone by draft day and General Quarters winning the Derby along with the promise not to post here any more. Ahhh, to dream....

Dierte, you and I are on the same wavelength. I've said I root for the uniform not the individual players. Right now DM gives us our best shot so he's the man. When his time is up and Kolb is given a shot I'll still root for the uniform. I don't care who's in it as long as they win. I wish Kolb the best and hope he's another Montana. I doubt it after watching him to date but granted he hasn't had a lot of time to prove anything yet so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Wanting him to start over DM based on what we've seen isn't too smart [see my 7:49 post] but Andy must see SOMETHING more than we have seen while he's been on the field. Noone can be THAT bad. As long as the Eagles win, I'm OK with anybody in the Uni....except T.O. Just stating facts, wolf, as always. You've said everything I stated and been wrong each time. Facts, not conjecture or supposition. And I don't bet on sports. Apparently you do. Your funeral.

Kolb:"Its not frustrating"....no whats frustrating is article after article about an unproven back-up almost as if the media is trying to create a QB controversy......this guy has never started in the NFL... its not like he came from another team where he proved he could lead a team on a deep playoff run... so why all the attn from the media??? who cares about kolb?? mcnabb needs to be given more respect and credit for the things he has done...as great as peyton manning is and all the talent he has around him has he been to 5 AFCC games???? i dont think so and manning has been 1 and done quite a few times...mcnabb who has always had avg talent around him has never been 1 and done in any year that he has been in the playoffs...how come he gets no credit when the eagles win but all the blame when the eagles fall short??? there needs 2 be more attn given to the new guys on the team and how they are progressing in learning the off/def not kolb who if he does play any extended time will mean we can kiss any super bowl dreams goodbye while he learns how to play and win in the NFL
