Kolb: "I got to prove" I'm the starter

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 11:36 AM

Kevin Kolb is back and ready to return to his position as the Eagles starting quarterback.

Of course, there are some that believe Kolb isn't the man for that job after Michael Vick filled in for the last game and a half, and helped guide the Eagles to their first victory Sunday.

Kolb said he's fine with that thinking.

"I know I didn't play well that first half," Kolb said, referring to his first-half outing against Green Bay before he left with a concussion. "We didn't play well. Mike's done a great job. I'm really proud of him, the way he came in and ... led us to the victory yesterday. ... All I can do is handle what's on the field and that's me getting out there."

Eagles coach Andy Reid has steadfastly said that Kolb is still his No. 1 quarterback. Following the Eagles' 35-32 win over Detroit, Vick said that the team was still "Kevin's."

"I appreciate it, but I got to prove it, too," Kolb said. "That's the competitive nature of everybody. ... Andy's loyal to everybody and he's a trustworthy guy. He does what's right for the team always. And I appreciate the words that Mike has said."

At the time he said those exact words, Vick was walking outside the NovaCare Complex office where Kolb was giving an interview to a handful of reporters. (He didn't get out of his seat and give Vick a big hug, in case you were wondering.)

"Listen, I know I'm in the business where I can't please everybody," Reid said. "I know that. That's not what I'm here to do. I'm here to make he decision that it right for the team. I will tell you that I think it's a beautiful situation. I look at it a lot different than other people. I got two quarterbacks that can play."

Kolb said that the quarterback controversy that has sprung from the first two games and that has occupied the city and talk radio has not affected him nor the Eagles.

"It's different when you're in-house," Kolb said.

However, asked if the first game was about as bad as he could have expected, Kolb laughed and said, "It wasn't exactly how I planned it out and played it in my head. But I'm big believer in things happen for a reason. The thing in this sport is you go through highs and lows."

Kolb once again said that he had no problem with Vick coming in under center for the occasional change-of-pace play.

"I don't think Mike's packages affect us at all," Kolb said.

Kolb was cleared Friday to return to practice and will start Sunday at Jacksonville, Reid said. Kolb said he started feeling better on Wednesday. The Eagles decided, however, to hold the quarterback out.

Kolb said that "memory wasn't a big issue" after the concussion. He said that he didn't have a lot of symptoms of a concussion when he originally came out. But when he was inserted for the Eagles next offensive series he said he forgot the snap count a couple of times.

He said his teammates then told Eagles head trainer Rick Bukholder that something was wrong.

But what about before the concussion, what was wrong with the offense and his effectiveness?

"I could have made it a little easier. I wasn't going through my reads thoroughly," Kolb said. "We just made a lot of mistakes across the board."

Kolb said that he watched Sunday's game from his Cherry Hill home with his family.

Kolb is a classy kid...He will throw for over 300 yards and lead the Eagles to a win against the Jaguars... like he did against the Chiefs and Champion Saints last season.

Fortunately for Kolb the Jaguars are up next. Not exactly a Top 10 D, but with the Eagles o-line who knows what will happen

KK your not getting a fair chance. This O-line in horrible by any standards. Vick gets it done because he is a unique QB in his ability to scramble and run. Peyton Manning would struggle behind this line. Believe Vick won' make it the season without an injury either.

At least he can keep his sense of humor... give Vick credit.. he did well... Kolb will need better protection then Vick got.... Then again any QB would need better protection than Vick got.... he can still move....

Sadly, Kolb supporters are now limited to Bill20 and Howard Eskin...

I have said it before for years, and I will say it again: it doesn't matter who we have at quarterback. As long as Andy Reid is in charge, we have zero chance at winning a Super Bowl. Why does the national media give this guy such a pass??? Am I missing something???

CAN'T PLAY PERIOD. Especially behind that O-Line, in Reid's one-dimensional offense (It is painfully obvious that Reid will NEVER get it!) Kolb looks absolutely befuddled and petrified when he drops back, has limited pocket awareness, as well as limited athletic ability to extend the play. He's gonna get killed, for certain. These are all reasons why Reid needs a mobile QB, such as McNabb, such as Vick. If you don't run the football, the D can tee off on our terrible O-Line. He is SUCH an idiot! He doesn't see this..

The hope is that the O-line will start to gel. Game planning is a part of it with players expressing surprise at what the other teams have done each week so far. In any case, it isn't ideal but QBs have developed their games with poor O-lines. I remember Aikman running for his life in 1989 seemingly with blood on his chin the whole season, but those games helped bring him up to speed, which is what this year is about for Kolb- getting used to the speed of the game, recognizing blitzes and generally putting into practice during live game situations what he has learned on paper and through video the last 3 years. He'll get it down, but unless he is better than 99.9% of the QBs who ever played, he is going to have ups and downs.

If Kolb plays well & the Eagles beat the Jags, I wonder if he celebrates by going out & stabbing a pig.
