Juan Castillo fired; Todd Bowles the new defensive coordinator

POSTED: Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 10:36 AM

Andy Reid fired Juan Castillo on Tuesday morning and re-assigned defensive backs coach Todd Bowles to defensive coordinator. Jeff McLane has the full story here.

Reid will speak at noon; we'll have all of your coverage on Birds' Eye View. A few quick points...

- This move could be viewed two ways: Reid admitting he made a mistake hiring Castillo, his long-time offensive line coach, as defensive line coach in 2011. Reid stuck with Castillo this season. It could also be viewed Reid as scapegoating Castillo for problems that are bigger -- such as an offense that struggles to score and turns the ball over, and a defensive lune that struggles to pressure the quarterback.

- It's fair to say Castillo needed to improve with in-game adjustments. That's what hurt the Eagles on Sunday against the Lions, when bad decisions in the fourth quarter seemed to plague the Eagles.

- Bowles has no experience as an NFL defensive coordinator, but he has significant experience as a defensive coach. Bowles has coached in the NFL since 2000 and served as the Miami Dolphins' interim coach last season. Bowles went 2-1. He's a former NFL player who has earned the respect of the locker room, particularly the defensive backs.

Jeffy told the Walrus to pick one, Juan or MM and Reid chose Juan. It's really that simple. End of the season, this circus will move out of town. The Tonner just hopes Lurie chooses a new ring leader who can replicate the results of Reid's first half-dozen years. He's been stealing a paycheck since then.

Castillo was eminently unqualified --even by Eagles standards...and good to see Andy feeling the heat...10 more games and he's gone too

I agree with letting Juan go. But it's not his fault. Personnel failures forced unprepared DBs (Anderson, Marsh) on the field in the 4th qtr, and they gave up big plays. D-line is not getting the job done. Overall, the D actually has held up OK. The offense is not doing them any faviors wioth all the turnovers and 4th qtr 3-and-outs.

I actually believe they make the playoffs. Sky is falling now, but I bet they beat ATL and end up 10-6....

The real problem is Vick and the offense, Eagles and Vick will set an ALL TIME NFL record for turnovers this season..and Vick has Eagles LAST IN NFL in points scored this season....DUMP VICK.

if he respects castillo so much, why not make him LB coach or put him on the O line again to clean up the mess?

firing him outright is just scapegoating him, no ifs and buts about that.

For the past three years, Andy has been playing a game of musical chairs, always making sure he has a chair when the music stops. It's now getting to the point that after McNabb was the scapegoat, then McDermott, then Banner, now Castillo (I'm sure I'm missing some), there are no chairs left - the music is about to stop - and, Andy, time's yours.

It's true, Juan couldn't help the fact that his defence was constantly underminded by Vick's turnovers and they still held teams under 20pt/gm this year. That said, I was asking myself during the Detroit game why was Juan switching over to a zone defence so much in the second hald when the man-to-man was working soooo well. If you look at the lions big plays they were all against zone. If Juan couldn't see that and a casual fan could, why keep doing it? No sacks in the last two games is unacceptable and 2 games in a row with fourth quarter colapses, although again to be fair the eagles themselve have most of their wins this season with 4qt comebacks and they are currently ranked 31st, yes 2nd to last, in offence. That is not something that helps defence. I would have liked to see MW fired since he has no clue what a balanced offence looks like. They can't even get 10 yds with a screen play this year, what gives?

It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to fire Marty because there is no one on the offensive side to take his position. Andy calls the plays and Marty is basically a figure head with a title. The offense is all Andy Reid and Andy isn't going to step down. The few times Andy allowed Marty to call the plays the offense was a little more balanced. During this so called shake up Andy needs to do what he says and start with himself and stop trying to game plan, he's really very bad at it. The best way to get your o-line confident is to run block, get in a rhythm. McCoy may not pop for 20 yards the first play but stick with it don't panic and think you have to throw 50 times, which Vick is not very good at that many pass attempts.

screen plays involve the offensive line at time and the o line sucks so that sucks thats the problem lol but i guess its the D's fault well juans fault that the offense cant get yards score points or keep possession he forced this to happen he wanted his defense to be tired in the fourth quarter from being constantly on the field stupid juan castillo. geez!

Agree with SU_alum above but the problems do not end with Castillo. The draft failures are now coming home to roost, too. Castillo is the necessary beginning of the house-cleaning that must ensue at season's end, if not sooner. It needs to include Mrs. Roseman's little boy, Howie, who has as much business as an NFL GM as an offensive line coach has as a defensive coordinator. If Lurie is finally serious about winning the only thing that matters then he is going to have the busiest off-season he has had since he purchased the team. This team is rotting from the head down.
