Jeremy Maclin disputes notion that he was afraid of contact
Zach Berman, Inquirer Staff Writer
In Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys, FOX analyst Troy Aikman suggested that Jeremy Maclin didn't want contact from an oncoming safety when he failed to catch a slant. Asked about Aikman's comment today, Maclin disputed this notion.
"You can call a lot of things, but the only people who only really understand what happened on that play are the people on the football field," Maclin said. "It wasn't like I was easing off because I didn't want to get hit. I thought I couldn't make the catch on the ball, so I was bracing myself for the hit. There's nothing wrong with that. If you want to call that soft or scared, so be it. But anybody who's been here, I've gone across the middle plenty of times, gotten hit and made plays. Simple as that."
Maclin said it had nothing to do with his injury, too. It was based on the angle he was running and the angle the ball was coming in on.
**Maclin spoke to Michael Vick on Tuesday. He said Vick was able to hold a conversation. "It's not like he's in la-la land," Maclin said.
- Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat.
And I thought he was one of the few players on this team - can't even admit he pussed out on this one. COskier
Aikman's wife said he was afraid to go over the middle too. LJ14
I love how people want to talk trash from the comforts of their keyboards - real tough. Maclin has gone over the middle TONS of times, if you watch the games you know that. These guys need to live to fight another day especially when you know there is not a play to be made (it was a bad throw) and you know there will be better opportunities (that's what you have to assume - it's a marathon not a sprint even if there's only a few minutes left - you can't create a play where one doesn't exist). I'd rather have Maclin attempting to help get us a win next week (I know: for who? for what?) then concussed and out for next week just so a bunch of people watching at home that will never in the lives meet or have an actual conversation with the guy can talk about how he "manned up" and took some unnecessary contact. But I guess I'm just an apologist while the tough guys logging in right now would have been dashing across the middle without thinking twice. mx55
Maclin and DeSean have....ALLIGATOR ARMS. jim35
I think he held up but he has taken some massive hits this year, including the first and third games with some kamikaze passes. Sidewinder7
so you didn't even try to catch it - gutless wimp - he was afriad of contact-plain and simple - cameras don't lie - we all saw it & didn't need aikmen to point it out to us
at least Desean made a gutsy catch earlier in the year as he ran down the side as he knew and got walloped - desean the field stretcher - what made maclin special was that he went down the field and would do slant as well but it sems no longer rossta
very soft... phillyceltic
In the same game against the Cowboys, Maclin jumped up FULLY EXTENDED for a poorly thrown ball, got undercut by the D-back, flipped over and landed awkwardly on his head. He went to the locker-room. I was surprised he even came back. The pass in question was a POORLY thrown pass by the NEW SAVIOR you idiots have been chanting for. It was a 6 yard slant and should've been thrown to Maclin's back shoulder not in stride where the nickel or LB would've been waiting. But since the NEW SAVIOR is 6'6" with long pretty hair it certainly wasn't his fault even though he's 6'6" and can clearly see over the line of scrimmage. You fools are hilarious. You know why Nick Fools(correct...Fools) can't play? Because Andy Reid drafted him, that's why. Brandon Graham, The 27 year old Canadian Fireman 2nd round pick on a Temple safety, Kevin Kolb, Curtis Marsh and now a 3rd round pick on Jesus Christ of Arizona?? Love him now people because you'll eventually hate him too. I watch Jackson get concussed against Atlanta in a horrific hit two years ago. I've watched Maclin get blasted his whole short career by safeties and db's. How soon you forget because you have this idiotic image about what you think a professional athlete should do when none of you are NOT professional athletes. You love to say, "they get payed to play a game". Or my favorite, "if I was playing, I would've...". You wouldn't have did squat!!! You weren't good enough with your fat gut and your 5.25 40. Guess what, your long term health is not a game. DO you watch or read ANY stories about football players after their career is over?? We all appreciated Jim McMahon's toughness as a player for the Bears and Eagles however he's had so many concussions half the time he cannot recognize his own wife. He's barely on the plus side of 50. Get real and get a clue. Facts before ignorance
Maclin doesn't get it. It's this simple. In a few months, there will be a new coach of this team. That guy will spend endless hours deciding which guys he'd like to be part of the nucleus of this team going forward. In all fairness to Maclin, the play the other day was the exception for him, not the rule. But he does not want that play on film for any potential coach to see. Period. drbob1
Agree with Facts, Maclin is not one to shy away from contact and he's shown it week in and week out for a few years now, including earlier in the game. The pass was poorly thrown and he had not shot of catching it, if he had dove for it he would have either gotten drilled, tipped it up in the air for a pick, or both.
I don't care what they get paid, for the hits they have to take in such vulnerable positions it's not enough! Colonel Angus- Col - if one of your guys did that, how would you handle it in the military? My guess is that he would be self-policed
- That was ... Alligator Body times 10. He is soft, how often does one have to see it. DJax at least this year is much tougher. And it's his contract year also. big contract next year? I don't think so.
why is he acting like Aikman wouldn't know? Troy was right on that but it was a bad throw and would have laid him out. Maybe he should have just admitted he would rather live another day and not be taken out with an injury. connorjr
You're right, Maclin. You're tough. What does Aikman know? He only won. He won a lot. He played with pain.
And to think, we picked this guy ahead of Clay Matthews when we needed a linebacker.
Maclin is one of the bigger busts in recent memory. Yes, he's a bust. Any first round pick should make a team considerably better. Maclin has yet to do this. Plus, he cost us two wins last year. (Drop and fumble against Atl. and SF.) rubicon24
