Jaws on No. 7 to Vick: "No problem"

POSTED: Friday, August 14, 2009, 3:44 PM

It's not a retired number, but the No. 7 has been worn with pride by a handful of Eagles over the organization's 75-year-plus existence. But no one wore it with more prestige than when Ron Jaworski did from 1977-86.

There will be another quarterback donning the No. 7, as of tomorrow's practice. The Eagles introduced the newly-acquired Michael Vick today at a press conference at the NovaCare complex, and even though there were no photo ops of Vick holding up the jersey in front of his chest, coach Andy Reid said the number was the former Atlanta Falcon's.

Jaworski, who isn't in favor of the Vick acquisition from an Xs and Os position, said that he wasn't upset that his old number would be worn by a convicted dog killer.

"I have absolutely no problem with it," Jaws, now an ESPN commentator, told The Inquirer.

There was no word on whether Bobby Hoying (No. 7, 1996-98) was distraught.

Here are the other Eagles to have slipped on the No.7 green:

Jeff Garcia, quarterback, 2006
Sean Landeta, punter, 1999-2002, 2005
Ken O'Brien, quarterback, 1993
John Reaves, quarterback, 1972-75
Roger Ruzek, punter, 1989-93
Jim Ward, quarterback, 1971-72
Roy Zimmerman, back, 1942-46

Why boycott the Eagles? They are trying to put the best product on the field. Get off your soapbox.

He served his time. Plenty of people have served less time for worse crimes against human beings. "Let he among you without sin cast the first stone."

You don't get it crusty.... Dog Fighting is illegal in this country no matter if you are white, black or green. I love when people try to make this a racial issue. Such a great cop-out! Vick didn't pay enough for the TORTURE that he caused to the innocent animals. Remember, he also LIED to the Federal Authorities when he was first approached about the dog fighting. That was also part of the criminal charges. On your last point HUNTING IS LEGAL. As Eskin would say, crusty you are a "DOPE!"

And the stadium will still be packed and people will still buy the jersey, so all of this "I'm so mad!!" stuff is just internet theatrics.

I'd say there are probably about 10-20% of the fans that really hate Vick and about 10-20% who feel that he overpaid for his crime. The rest of us fall somewhere in the middle. Not sure how I feel about the move yet. I need to see more from Vick and see his actions to see whether he is really remorseful and trying to make up for what he did. But I'm willing to give him a second chance to prove himself. Watching that press conference, I think he's sincere. One thing that remains constant though is that people with extreme opinions (on either side of this issue) aren't going to sway anyone else's opinion simply by being louder and more obnoxious. Acting like a jerk isn't going to win you any friends. So if people don't have intelligent, thoughtful comments to add, then really what's the point of just ranting venom or nonsense? Does it make you feel cool? Does it make you feel important? Do you have nobody to listen to you rant in the real world? Look at pretty much any comment or message board for any site nowadays and more than half of what is posted is ranting, whining, complaining, idiocy, etc. If you want to boycott the Eagles, then go right ahead, nobody will miss you. Quit talking about it and do it already. Quit commenting and posting about the Eagles if you're boycotting them. You shouldn't be reading articles or blog posts about them if you are boycotting them. Wish I had a dollar for every time some idiot posted a boycott of something on an internet message board, as if anyone else cares about their "boycott". I'd be rich man.

The truth is that studies have been very revealing about animal abuse. Even an avid hunter doesn't try to shoot to torture. They look for the most effecient shots. They don't want to cause the animal pain and that's the biggest difference. We even feel worse about those who murder people vs those who torture and then murder people. Seriously people, stop making excuses for this guy. Just cause your on the internet doesn't mean you can't show some integrity.
