Here comes the WildVick formation
Bob Brookover
Eagles coach Andy Reid said Michael Vick will play in Thursday night's exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field. What the coach didn't say was more interesting.
Reid said the starters are scheduled to play the first three quarters and that Kevin Kolb would be the quarterback in the fourth quarter. He didn't say that Vick will play quarterback at all, which means his playing time could come exclusively in the Wildcat formation.
Asked if he'd have any problem showing the Wildcat formation in a preseason game, Reid said he would not. As for what the coach expects to see from Vick, he said he wasn't sure.
"I can only go off what I've seen in practice and it looks like he's been moving around pretty good," Reid said. "Again, it pretty much has been two years, so we'll see how it works out. We'll give him a couple shots in there and see what he can do."
Reid refused to say much about the New York Post story that said Vick had an alcoholic beverage at the Airport Marriott shortly after he joined the Eagles. Tony Dungy, a mentor to Vick, told SI.com that "Michael, you can't do that."
"You know how I am," Reid said. "I handle those things in house. He and I have talked and I'm not going to get into all that. We've talked."
More important returns
While Vick's return to the playing field for the first time since the final game of the 2006 regular season will get most of the attention Thursday night, it's far more important news for the Eagles that both running back Brian Westbrook and defensive end Trent Cole will play in their first preseason games against the Jags. Westbrook is returning ahead of schedule from ankle surgery and Cole is playing for the first time since suffering a shoulder sprain late in the Lehigh University portion of training camp.
"I'm used to playing preseason games and I want to get back out there with the guys," Cole said. "The games haven't been looking too good, but I'm ready to go out there and get into the game."
The Eagles will also have three-fifths of their projected starting offensive line on the field Thursday with center Jamaal Jackson, right guard Stacy Andrews and left tackle Jason Peters. Still missing will be right tackle Shawn Andrews, who did not take part in trainer Rick Burkholder's on-field rehab program today, and left guard Todd Herremans, who continues to recover from a left foot injury. Herremans remains in a walking boot, but said he still thinks he'll be ready for the season opener. He also said he was scheduled for a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging exam today.
The Eagles will also be without cornerback Sheldon Brown (ribs), linebacker Omar Gaither (sprained knee), fullback Leonard Weaver (sprained knee) and defensive lineman Darren Howard (groin) Thursday.

Actually - athomejamn - animal abuse is a very sure sign that someone is one the road to being a psycopath or sociopath. That's the kind of person you want your kids watching? Also, it wasn't just "animal competition" it was torture. mmbrown
Seriously, after 10 years you guys are still asking Reid about potential disciplinary conversations with players? He doesn't air dirty laundry in the press. Man, some of you reporters are dense if you haven't figured that out yet. JimG
There was another case of dogfighting and much more severe in the same local as Vicks, and it hardly made the news. The individuals involve didn't get near the sentence and none of the notariety. He did his time. Let him get on with his life. EagleBob
clear this up for me - i heard it on Eskin when he interviewed Kolb, but missed the begining. Whats the deal with backup QB's and numbers, in regards to who can come in and out? If Vick is going to be doing this wilddog stuff, is he listed as a QB or something else. thanks kids. vladamir
Here's the lesson for kids - "He was a good football player who did a very bad thing, and he spent a lot of time in jail for it and lost all of his money, and now he only makes a little bit more money than the kicker". Kids will understand how much his life sucks. B in DC
Comment removed.- B_In_DC and DDSTMAN are the only bright ones posting on here today I see. The rest of you racist hating idiots need to get a life.
Someone commented this was a first time offense but it wasn't, it was the first time he got caught. I'm so sick of the race card, I don't care what color his is, he is a discusting sub-human being. No one that has been convicted of a crime should be allowed to represent any sports team. It may no mean much but I won't support any eagle sponsers, I given up snapple, shopping at the acme, 7-11, etc. I hear he brought a house in my neighborhood. For those who think that people don't make just a stink for other athletes that break the law, YOU ARE WRONG WRONG WRONG! AND THAT IS REGARDLESS OF RACE! banzai4ap
No booze for any of these millionaires, Vick or not. Pro sports is nuts to allow these spoiled brats who are paid millions to risk a career as well as a season for some booze. After the season, lift 'em. But, during the season. NO. I just hope Vick can upgrade the O since the Eagles seem injured at the start of this new season and will need all the help they can get. Comment removed.- Just bringing Vick on the field and lining him up all over the place will at the very least cause a lot of oppenents to burn a timeout. That will help even things out a little, since Andy wastes so many of our timeouts.
