Here comes the WildVick formation

POSTED: Tuesday, August 25, 2009, 2:39 PM

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Michael Vick will play in Thursday night's exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field. What the coach didn't say was more interesting.

Reid said the starters are scheduled to play the first three quarters and that Kevin Kolb would be the quarterback in the fourth quarter. He didn't say that Vick will play quarterback at all, which means his playing time could come exclusively in the Wildcat formation.

Asked if he'd have any problem showing the Wildcat formation in a preseason game, Reid said he would not. As for what the coach expects to see from Vick, he said he wasn't sure.

"I can only go off what I've seen in practice and it looks like he's been moving around pretty good," Reid said. "Again, it pretty much has been two years, so we'll see how it works out. We'll give him a couple shots in there and see what he can do."

Reid refused to say much about the New York Post story that said Vick had an alcoholic beverage at the Airport Marriott shortly after he joined the Eagles. Tony Dungy, a mentor to Vick, told SI.com that "Michael, you can't do that."

"You know how I am," Reid said. "I handle those things in house. He and I have talked and I'm not going to get into all that. We've talked."

More important returns

While Vick's return to the playing field for the first time since the final game of the 2006 regular season will get most of the attention Thursday night, it's far more important news for the Eagles that both running back Brian Westbrook and defensive end Trent Cole will play in their first preseason games against the Jags. Westbrook is returning ahead of schedule from ankle surgery and Cole is playing for the first time since suffering a shoulder sprain late in the Lehigh University portion of training camp.

"I'm used to playing preseason games and I want to get back out there with the guys," Cole said. "The games haven't been looking too good, but I'm ready to go out there and get into the game."

The Eagles will also have three-fifths of their projected starting offensive line on the field Thursday with center Jamaal Jackson, right guard Stacy Andrews and left tackle Jason Peters. Still missing will be right tackle Shawn Andrews, who did not take part in trainer Rick Burkholder's on-field rehab program today, and left guard Todd Herremans, who continues to recover from a left foot injury. Herremans remains in a walking boot, but said he still thinks he'll be ready for the season opener. He also said he was scheduled for a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging exam today.

The Eagles will also be without cornerback Sheldon Brown (ribs), linebacker Omar Gaither (sprained knee), fullback Leonard Weaver (sprained knee) and defensive lineman Darren Howard (groin) Thursday.

Every criminal that does their sentence (with the exception of death penalties and life) gets the chance to return to society and become a productive member again. He very well may do more to STOP dogfighting in the area than anybody else when it's all said and done. Philly10, you are also entitled to free-speech, no matter how dumb you seem to make it, so feel free to keep coming on here and spewing hatred. He's still got a lot of supporters to...

If you watch the game, remember what that Vickflick of the wrist did to dozens of dogs. Remember.

"Vick had an alcoholic beverage at the Airport Marriott shortly after he joined the Eagles." So, he already served his time and you expect him to be a Saint?

Hammer859, I agree with xrajux. You are original. I hear that Jay Leno is looking for comedy writers. You should send him your material. Yes, Philly10 is equally annoying on both blogs. Let me guess, he is writing on the Phillies blog that he thinks Michael Vick is going to torture the Philly Phanatic?

GUNTHER48 - "the indescriminate slaughter of wolves" Not the correct venue for this discussion but it's actually called predator control. Not all of us get our meat shrink wrapped at Costco and if you had groups of wild dogs tearing through the meat isle at your local supermarket I suspect you would be crying for someone else to kill them for you.

whose cheering for vick though? he is an eagle..we cheer all of our eagles if u r a REAL fan regardless of what they did...if they can contribute then fine if not sit the bench and let someone else contribute. if vick can help so be it..dont like vick dont cheer him simple as that. do i agree with them signing vick? nope...i dont see what his role is on this team...if kolb is the number two qb and vick is third..if he plays he has to play the rest of the game at qb. cant have him go in at another position because the nfl has rules about jersey numbers. it makes no sense to me unless they move kolb down the depth chart, some games, but andy would go against what he told kolb he's the number 2 qb. from a football stand point it makes no sense.

Daiggles and Philly 10, Even if you like the wilddog comment, its only about 3 weeks old. Check any post about Vick and the Wildcat since he signed and at least one angry, dog loving, genius mentions it. They might as well say they invented the question mark. As for the chump comment, I got your chump right here alright and there is no sarcasm hanging beneath it.

You racist rednecks kill me, if Vick was working at McDonalds nobody would give a hoot. There are priest molesting kids, drug dealers selling drugs and Bernard Madoff destroying peoples future and all you care about is Vick dogfighting and killing dogs. I agree Vick was wrong but what do you want him to do? You want to protest something, protest the reason why everyone who helped Madoff is not in jail too.
