Strongside linebacker Chris Gocong remained out of practice today as he continues to recover from quad and hamstring injuries he suffered to his right leg during Sunday's win over the New York Giants.

Having missed two straight practices, it's possible that Gocong could miss his first game since his rookie season when he missed the entire year after suffering a neck injury in the preseason.

If Gocong cannot play, rookie Moise Fokou is expected to make his first NFL start. Fokou replaced Gocong at strongside linebacker last week against the Giants and finished with three tackles.

In other injury news, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley and defensive end Chris Clemons returned to the practice field. Bunkley had missed practice Wednesday with a sore knee and Clemons had been sidelined by a sprained shoulder joint. Both those injuries occured against the Giants.

Defensive end Victor Abiamiri, out the last two games because of a sprained knee, participated in individual drills and said before practice that he thought he was close to returning. It still seems unlikely that he will play Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said Sean Jones would remain the starter at free safety despite the return of rookie Macho Harris from an ankle injury. McDermott said he will rotate Jones, Harris and Quintin Demps at the free safety position.

Don't be surprised to see a lot of 3 safety nickel if Gocong can't go. Can't trust Fokou to cover Witten

Anytime people complain about a DE being injured all of the time, I usually end up thinking about Derrick Burgess - he missed over two years of games here and had only 2.5 sacks in his final year here (regular season). Even though he blew up in the playoffs, there was no indication that he was going to become the player he became in Oakland. /// Abiamiri has already proven to be better than McDougle - in a little over 2 years, Vic already has 3 sacks. McDougle only had 3 sacks over his entire 6-year career. /// Speaking of 5th-round picks, Trent Cole is one. So is Brent Celek. Quentin Mikell went undrafted. So did Leonard Weaver, Akeem Jordan and Jamaal Jackson. Sometimes these later round guys take a while to turn into solid starters. Macho Harris isn't ready to beat out a guy who had 14 INTs over the last 3 years (Sean Jones) - that doesn't mean Macho won't eventually make it big. It doesn't mean he will either, but I'm not ready to cut him from the team.

Gocong is injured???? I hope he gets back soon - or there goes our Super Bowl hopes....not!!!! I think we could play without Gocong at all, just play with 10 guys on defense, and there would be no difference. He is like Mike Mamula, sometimes you go through entire games without hearing his name.

Gocong's been a stud but it just points out where the Birds failed in the Draft. They need Linebackers. They're thin back there even if Bradley, Gocong were playing. That was shown during the Championship game last year that the D was lacking. Also, although I don't think he's as good as Dawk was for them, I like Sean Jones back there as he's thrown his body around. Go Birds!!!
