Fargas deal unlikely

POSTED: Friday, March 12, 2010, 2:11 PM

In talking to Justin Fargas, you can tell that he really wants to sign with the Eagles.

Unfortunately for him, the Eagles aren't likely to sign the free agent running back, according to a league source.

Fargas has played his entire career with the lowly Raiders, so joining a winning organization would have been nice. But a deal could not be struck and he's left the NovaCare Complex. Beforehand, though, he felt positive about the vibes he was feeling from the Eagles.

"From what I understand they're excited about the possibility for me to be an Eagles," Fargas said. "They feel like my style of play can fit in well here. This is known as a tough city and a tough team and I consider myself a tough running back."

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Fargas is more of a strictly-in-between-the-tackles running back. He ran for 491 yards on 129 carries last season (3.8 ypc), down significantly from his 2007 (1,009) and 2008 seasons (853). Part of the reason for the decline was that he split time in the backfield with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.

Fargas would have provided depth at running back. LeSean McCoy has been handed the starting job, but he's only entering his second season and the Eagles need a competent backup in case of injury. Fargas wouldn't have been heavily involved in the ballcarrying rotation with McCoy and fullback Leonard Weaver in tow, but he would have been a change of pace from both tailbacks.

The Raiders waived Fargas last week because, they said, he failed to pass a physical. He said today that wasn't true and that he was told it was because he was due a $1.7 million roster bonus. Needless to say, he's ready to play for a new organization.

"I've had seven tough years in Oakland and I want to compete for a championship," Fargas said. "That's the expected here with the organization and the fans here."

Fargas has also visited with Kansas City and Cleveland. He said that he currently has no other visits scheduled.

It wont happen because all the fans know fargas would fit well. Remember just because you have been watching football for 25 or 30 years doesnt make you a good GM.

running game as designed by Reid & Mornhinweg is pretty unspectacular. McCoy isn't enough as a feature back. Someone like Fargas could push McCoy for the starting role ...wait & see a legit back like Fargas won't get signed...Reid will find another Lorenzo Booker instead. (HTML deleted)

Over paying players is just dumb. Remember Kearse? Fargas could help. I am just saying they are negotiating, which is smart. Samuel is way overpaid, too.

I love "sources" their so insightful. Anyway, why pick a guy like this when they don't run the ball much. I checked him out on Youtube he kinda reminds me of Buckhalter when healthy, strong hard runner will pop you at the end.

well its an uncapped year, so that does not apply this year genius. They can spend as much as they want. and they can release him after 1 year if they dont like him. its more stupidity and if you think they are so smart watch them go sub .500 next season. against that schedule they arent even gonna make the playoffs. I can tell you they wont and Reid will say they will win the SB or some other nonsense.

You guys are just ridiculous. Fargas and his agent aimed high, and missed the mark. He will go to Cleveland to try and get an offer they can bargain with. KC doesn't need him now that Jones is signed. So, if he truly wants to play for a winner he will be back, and take less. That's smart, no wonder you guys can't understand it.

how can they not sign this guy ??? they pass on anquan boldin two years in a row, and now this ? Reid is so %$@!% dumb. Its guys like Fargas that can help win a SB. Even the saints had 2 good interior RB's to run it up the middle, the colts just had small fast guys and they couldnt run at all, become one dimensional and end up losing cauz they couldnt even hold a 10-0 lead cauz they couldnt run the ball. no team that throws it more then 57% over the course of a season has EVER won a SB. Saints at 55% last year. colts at 62. colts were at 55% when they won it that one time. Reid is alawys 60-80% wtf. thats why he will never win one. they are gonna draft mcclusky another small fast guy that cant gain 1 yard up the middle on 3rd and 1. if weaver gets injured thats it, no 3rd and 1 conversions for the year. so stupid.

big physical back who runs hard between the tackles? like we'd want to add a player like that. this is the eagles...if he's not undersized then we don't want him

Nice "Story"! Any facts or reasons that this 'league' source cited for the deal being unlikely? This is like the cotton candy of news stories...where's the meat?

Did the league source have any additional info that would make this worth while?

I don't even know why the eagles have any running backs on the roster. They really should just stack the team with o-linemen, quarterbacks and wide receivers.

The typical post...let's bash the braintrust and then jump on the bandwagon when things go well....then, after a tough week or a bad injury they jump on the front office as if they should have known the guy would break a leg. The birds are getting high marks from around the league on their moves this offseason. Yes - some gambles, but when/if they pay off they will be geniuses...if they fail the idiots will launch into a tyrade. Champions take chances - sometimes you win and sometimes you learn.

If we can sign Huggy Bear Jr we would have close to a 3 man rotation at RB again. Whoops! I forgot.....Fat Andy loves the long bomb to DeJax. Oh well, expect the Eagles to flub their dub in the playoffs again this year!

Join a winning organization?, win what?. Have the Eagles ever won a Super Bowl?, how many?. How many Super Bowls have the Eagles ever been in?, 2 and blowed out both times one by the Raiders. The Raiders with 3 Super Bowl wins and 5 Super Bowls played in to date, an NFL record 14 AFC Championship Games played in to date and their own wing in the Hall of Fame will be judged by History to have been the winning organization. Remember my puke green friends, no one 10 years from now will remember or care that a team went 5-11 or 10-6 in the regular season in the year 2009. It is the Champions that they remember. Bad few years in Oakland or not they still thumped your punk @#$## last year and trying to bring up the Eagles in the same chat about the Raiders is like trying to bring up a cheap 5,000 claimer running on some bush track in Idaho up when talking about the great Man O War, it is a joke. And guess who history will judge as the claimer?, you got it, the team in the puke green lol.

Once again we avoid the true NFC East type of RB...One that can wear down a defense lime we saw the Cowboys do to the Eagles. If Andy thinks McCoy is going to make it through the season he is CRAZY...Looks like another year of 12 minutes a game of time of possesion by the offense..We better improve the defense since they will be out there the entire game!!

The failed physical must've raised a red flag. Otherwise not sure why they wouldn't sign him? He's your bowling ball-style, between-the-tackles RB who treats each of his 6-8 touches like it's the last carry he'll ever get. Not only that, but with McCoy's tendency to dance in the backfield a little too much, it can only help to bring on a veteran back who explodes to the line of scrimmage like Fargas. Hope they have something else in the cards to fit that bill

Didn't everybody hear? We signed Baskett, the rest is just needed for depth and to fill out the bottom of the roster! We can all book our flights now!!!!!!!!!!

Sign Fargas. Trade McNabb to Vikings for Edwards. Take the Safety with first pick. Grab a QB in the later rounds. Not so hard, really.

This seems odd why bring him in at all if you're not interested in him? The price range had to have been pretty established beforehand and I doubt Fargas was unrealistic with his demands.

No thanks, the Eagles have a big back and an all purpose every down man in Weaver and McCoy. They need a speed demon change of pace back to round out the corps.

Fargas has a lot of mileage on his body. I don't know if he's ever played in a West Coast offense. Probably better to move on and look at other options.

Seems everybody is in agreement, J. Far would be a good addition and compliment Weaver and Shady well. Can't understand why they had a press conference if he's not going to sign. Eagles are getting more confusing every day. I just don't get it with them anymore.

I'm starting a wild rumor now - maybe ESPN will run with it... WESTBROOK WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR IN EAGLES GREEN! Reason - Eagles "can't find" a RB that fits their system and Westbrook receives "limited interest" in the open market so both sides swallow their pride and B-West returns. Look - I'm just as good as every other sports writer out there! I can make stuff up too!!!

The signing or drafting of a RB is critical to the team's success this year. I'm not sure why everyone loves McCoy - he hasn't proven anything yet. He had series where he looked good, and series where he looked lost.

Weaver and McCoy will carry the load but it would be nice to have a veteran RB as insurance. However, Fargas has to be able to play special teams. I don't they want Weaver playing on special teams anymore.

memo to andy reid: if he's healthy, sign him. he's a tough runner and good change-of-pace back to have for depth. then, devote your entire draft to the defense. trade up in 1st rd. for de-brandon graham, 2nd rd. take olb-navarro bowman, 3rd rd. take fs-major wright and cb-jerome murphy, 4th rd. take olb-a.j. edds and cb-alterraun verner for depth. the last couple of picks trade for higher future picks.
