Everyone preparing as if Vick's starting

POSTED: Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 2:01 PM

Did the Eagles handle the concussions suffered by Stewart Bradley and Kevin Kolb correctly at the outset?
Yes. As Andy Reid said, they followed the proper protocol.
No. Neither player should have returned to the game.

All signs are pointing to Michael Vick starting at quarterback Sunday when the Eagles travel to Detroit.

Coach Andy Reid said that Vick is taking all the first-team repetitions under center Wednesday and Thursday and that starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, who suffered a concussion Sunday, has not yet passed the second stage of a concussion test.

Kolb was at the NovaCare Complex Wednesday and has done some light exercising the last two days, according to Reid. But he has not attended any team or position meetings and won't do so until he passes the second-stage test. Kolb must then pass an another exam from an independent specialist to return to practice.

Linebacker Stewart Bradley, who also suffered a concussion against the Packers, failed to pass the test, too. Reid said Bradley was further along than Kolb, though.

"They are making progress," Reid said.

Still, the team is preparing for the Lions as if Vick were the starter. Detroit, likewise, is formulating its defensive gameplan on the notion that Vick will be the guy.

"We’ll prepare for Vick," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "We have to. Regardless of whether of he starts or not we need to be ready for all his packages.”

Vick said that he isn't using this likely opportunity to prove anything.

"If I'm the guy then I'm going to get ready to try to put this team in position to win and that's the ultimate goal," he said. "I don't really go out and try to prove to anybody that I can still play this game. The primary focus is to put this team in a position to win whenever I'm on the field. You can't go out and try to prove yourself because that's adding pressure to this game and it's already hard as it is.

"I just have to make the most out of the opportunity and try to help this football team win until Kevin comes back and he's healthy."

Reid said that if Kolb can't dress Sunday, he'll carry just two quarterbacks: Vick and third stringer Mike Kafka.

Kolb and Bradley were the only Eagles that weren't at practice Wednesday. Reid said that Omar Gaither will start at middle linebacker if Bradley can't go.

The coach also stuck by his initial statement that Mike McGlynn was his starting center now that Jamaal Jackson is out for the season with a torn triceps.

Back with more.

Thank God, now that game on Sunday will actually be fun to watch, we don't have to suffer through Drew Bledsoe Jr. on Sunday (although comparing Drew Bledsoe to Kolb is grossly unfair to Bledsoe, Kolb is putrid, Bledsoe could at least play a little bit). People in Philly are finally starting to see the light of day, something which I knew before the third preseason game. Try and tell that to the idiot Philly sports writers who apparently have been covering football their whole lives but don't know the FIRST THING ABOUT FOOTBALL and continue to support Kolb: RAY "the fraud" DIDINGER, Les Bowen, Howard Eskin, Paul Domowitch, RICH HOFFMAN, ANTHONY GARGANO and GLEN MACNOW, lonewolf, and John Gonzolez, (yes Gonzo does in fact deserve to be listed after lonewolf, he's that stupid). HEY MORONS, NEWS FLASH, KOLB CAN'T PLAY, and the so called "football experts" continue to throw away their credibility by supporting this stiff who can't throw and certainly can't move. To paraphrase Rich Hoffman: "Kolb has the same mobility at 26 that Donovan has now at 33" LOL, Rich, you are truly a moron.

Thank God, we won't have to suffer through another one of "Drew Bledsoe Jr's" performances (although comparing Kolb to Bledsoe is grossly unfair, Bledsoe proved he can throw a little bit, Kolb has proved he's a bona-fide stiff).

Most everyone with half a brain is saying that we need to see Kolb for at least a season to see if he is a starting quarterback. People who do otherwise in local media or fans give Philly fans a poor reputation to free agents and the national media.

Ron Mexico to the rescue. Suh is hoping he doesnt contract anything on a sack. Vick is obviously better at this point and most of that is because of his running ability with our porous oline. Still gotta give Kolb more than a half, even though experts like bmorgen can scout a qb from their couch.

It is too quick to judge Kolb. As you guys mention, he had 2 great games last season. Its too early to start calling for another quarterback. However, the concussion changed everything. If he is not fit to play, then it is settled and Vick will start. He should however get another shot when he is ready. In the meantime, Vick will be starting. So let it be written, so let it be done!!

No big deal, the Beagles play the wimpy Lions this week. Hope they're 0-2 by Monday though, but it's not likely.

Philly_Mike: DID YOU NOT WATCH THAT SAINTS GAME?! Kolb dug a hole for himself with interceptions he had to throw his way out of, thus lots of yards . . . Against the Chiefs, the Eagles defense kept the Chiefs defense on the field a lot.
