Eagles to host Mike Bell

POSTED: Monday, March 15, 2010, 7:18 PM

The Eagles will host free agent running back Mike Bell tomorrow at the NovaCare Complex, according to a team source.

Bell is a restricted free agent, but he was tendered by the Saints at the lowest level so the Eagles would not lose a draft pick if they signed him. New Orleans does, however, have the right to match any offer.

Bell recently visited with the Seahawks. The fifth-year pro ran for 654 yards on 172 carries (3.8 yards per carry) last season for the Super Bowl champion Saints. He also scored five rushing touchdowns.

The Eagles need another running back after they released Brian Westbrook last month. LeSean McCoy is now the team's starter, and fullback Leonard Weaver will get touches, but the team needs another alternative and a safety valve.

Former Raiders running back Justin Fargas visited the Eagles last week, but he isn't expected to sign with the team, according to league sources.

Bell is only 26 so he would be a better pickup than Fargas. About 220 lbs. so he should be able to block. He must be able to play special teams. See people! No need to gripe about Fargas.

Any depth we can get before the draft without losing a draft pick, will ultimately help the team and let them focus when drafting. I still like the idea of getting Toby Gerhardt if possible, big back, smart kid from Stanford, and did run a 4.5 at the combine.

Interesting about Bell -- he's shown virtually no ability to catch the ball out of the backfield...almost a pre-requisite for playing RB for the Eagles. On the plus side, he can slide to FB, so offers insurance at both positions. I do wish they'd make a strong play at Leon Washington of the Jets, however. He's a perfect fit and should be obtainable since the Jets signed LT.

Baskett, Fargas, and now possible Bell. Who needs stars when we can fill up a roster of low draft picks and undrafted players. Pay them minimum wage have them play their hearts out and reap the benefits baby. I really do wish the Eagles had a public stock. I would buy as many shares as I could afford because Banner knows dollars.

Just think what the Eagles would do this year if Cliff Lee hadn't been traded...

@jmk1512 No ability to catch out of the backfield? Go look at his rookie season with the Broncs, please.
