Eagles sign DE Derrick Burgess

The Eagles signed defensive end Derrick Burgess to a two-year contract on Wednesday, the team confirmed.

The one-time Eagle will replace rookie end Brandon Graham, who will be placed on injured reserve after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Burgess last played for the Patriots and was cut before the season. He was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2001 draft and recorded six sacks as a rookie. He broke his leg in the first game of the 2002 season, however, and missed all of 2003 with a torn ACL.

He came back in 2004 and was great in the postseason, sacking current Eagles quarterback Michael Vick twice in the NFC championship and notching the only sack for the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Burgess left for Oakland via free agency in 2005 and totaled 27 sacks over the next two seasons for the Raiders. He made the Pro Bowl in each season, but his production slipped the following two years. He spent 2009 in New England and was cut on Sept. 4 of this year.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Burgess will be expected to come in and help an Eagles pass rush that lost Graham for the season and has struggled of late. Aside from starting defensive ends Trent Cole and Juqua Parker, the Eagles also have reserves Darryl Tapp and rookie Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.

I guess our 2010 3rd-round DE pick Daniel Teo-Nesheim is so bad we had to go out and sign our unemployed 2001 3rd-round pick.

He's the only player we've regretted losing during the Reid era but if you look at how much money the Raiders gave him it would've hard to justify signing him. I doubt he has much left.

Philly_Mike if you look, all the players that still produced that the patriots let get away all left b/c of contract issues. nothing about performance. so i dont think that arguement works with burgess, however im glad they signed him. being th last DE on the Patriots maybe better then some of the guys that made the eagles team. And i do think he will play this year b/c they usually have 4 active DEs on sundays. so in two weeks i expect him to be active.

I think Burgess was a great pick up. He was our Trent Cole at one point. Players in this league play better in different systems, and I think Burgess knows this scheme very well. I would have to agree, that this pick up does not match what the Phillies did last night.

Great post RockStar, haha. I guess we hope he can play a handful of snaps the way we like to rotate linemen, it could work I guess.

Nice move. Hopefully he's still got something left. They need some high motor guys on that D'line. He used to be one. Hopefully he will be again.

BTW you dopey Eagles fans are still whining and complaining? First place team, got a nice road win. Playoffs are looking good and you're still whining?? Gotta be the worst fans ever. Bunch of no-nothing jerks. I thought Deadskins fans down here were the worst but at least they're moaning about a crummy last place team with an old inaccurate QB and a GM that gave the Eagles a starting safety.and a high 3rd rounder next year. Did I say Eagles fans are a bunch of jerks?? Oh, No-nothing jerks.

Dan Teo not getting it done, he got limited play in a couple games but was non-existant. If Burgess has anything left in the tank, he will help. Only guy I ever seen that Vick couldn't shake. This is a good plug down the stretch.

If the guy can bring it for 10 plays a game it's a plus move after losing Graham. What about Ricky Sapp??

Never understand why they didnt sign Al Harris when he was available. He is a good tackler and still pretty good in coverage. Let him cover some TE's and watch how much more successful they would be, instead of Hanson. Joselio played OK during Dallas game but he will be picked on in Playoff by Rodgers,Brees and Ryan.

hope he has something left. His veteran presence could prove useful with our rooks on "D" and spell Juqua for a playoff push. Go Eagles.SEE U IN DALLAS.

we do need help -so if he is in shape-he will help- it's not like graham was doing anything--I admitt he was coming along but that's about it--we still need more help-we also have to stop with the pentalties and giving up the big plays or the 3rd down and long yards-it's killing us.
