The Eagles signed defensive end Derrick Burgess to a two-year contract on Wednesday, the team confirmed.

The one-time Eagle will replace rookie end Brandon Graham, who will be placed on injured reserve after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Burgess last played for the Patriots and was cut before the season. He was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2001 draft and recorded six sacks as a rookie. He broke his leg in the first game of the 2002 season, however, and missed all of 2003 with a torn ACL.

He came back in 2004 and was great in the postseason, sacking current Eagles quarterback Michael Vick twice in the NFC championship and notching the only sack for the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Burgess left for Oakland via free agency in 2005 and totaled 27 sacks over the next two seasons for the Raiders. He made the Pro Bowl in each season, but his production slipped the following two years. He spent 2009 in New England and was cut on Sept. 4 of this year.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Burgess will be expected to come in and help an Eagles pass rush that lost Graham for the season and has struggled of late. Aside from starting defensive ends Trent Cole and Juqua Parker, the Eagles also have reserves Darryl Tapp and rookie Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.

Dan Teo not getting it done, he got limited play in a couple games but was non-existant. If Burgess has anything left in the tank, he will help. Only guy I ever seen that Vick couldn't shake. This is a good plug down the stretch.

If the guy can bring it for 10 plays a game it's a plus move after losing Graham. What about Ricky Sapp??

Never understand why they didnt sign Al Harris when he was available. He is a good tackler and still pretty good in coverage. Let him cover some TE's and watch how much more successful they would be, instead of Hanson. Joselio played OK during Dallas game but he will be picked on in Playoff by Rodgers,Brees and Ryan.

hope he has something left. His veteran presence could prove useful with our rooks on "D" and spell Juqua for a playoff push. Go Eagles.SEE U IN DALLAS.

WITH BRADLEY AND GRAHAM OUT, PERHAPS BURGESS COULD BE A FILL AS A ROVING LINEBACKER ALA TROTTER....NOW IF THEY COULD GET BACK THE PLAYERS THEY GAVE AWAY OR CUT...NAH...THAT MIGHT COST MONEY

we do need help -so if he is in shape-he will help- it's not like graham was doing anything--I admitt he was coming along but that's about it--we still need more help-we also have to stop with the pentalties and giving up the big plays or the 3rd down and long yards-it's killing us.
