Eagles sign S Nate Allen

POSTED: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 7:37 PM

Safety Nate Allen, who the Eagles are counting on as a likely starter, signed a four-year contract Tuesday night and is expected to take part in practice Wednesday, according to the team.

Allen is expected to get the first shot at the team's vacant free safety spot. The Eagles took him with the 37th pick in April's draft, using the selection obtained from the Redskins in the Donovan McNabb trade.

Allen missed the first two practices of training camp Tuesday. Other rookies reported Monday.

He began running with the first team in June practices after free agent signee Marlin Jackson was lost for the season with injury. The team struggled at free safety last year after losing Brian Dawkins in free agency, and is hoping Allen can fill the void on a new-look defense.

Before he signed, defensive coordinator Sean McDermott had stressed the importance of Allen and first round pick Brandon Graham getting into camp before their rookie years.

"If you're not here it's hard to improve as a football player," McDermott told reporters earlier Tuesday.

McDermott had also praised Kurt Coleman, another rookie safety who had a strong first day of practice.

Maybe I'm being too serious, but do we ever stop to ask why this is even a headline in a newspaper. They eventually sign after the not so subtle poker game between owner and greaseball...er, I mean agent. The news heralds the agent's success in bleeding another beach house out of Lurie's loot, Nate Allen adds his name to well paid men, who may or may not be the next Brian Dawkins. Yes, I know to the average addicted Iggle zealot, the signing is bigger news than leaky oil, careless barges, the heat wave, several more murders in angryville. Only our wives no how empty all of this is...this idolatry, collegiate affiliation to jocks in midnight green...seriously, with all those out of work, or folks my age with sons in Afghanistan fighting a complex, convoluted, yet inevitable conflict, is this contract news? It's never an issue of when. Just how much. When is determined by the guy who calls what game is played. Honestly, I'm a lawyer. Juvenile law. I've never met an agent that I could stand.

mcnabbtomoss...you're a d**che. plain and simple. not to mention your RIDICULOUS screen name. do the fans of the Eagles a favor and leave us alone. Seriously. Stop reading Philly.com, get out of the house and do something with your life. Have you even had contact with an actual woman in the past 5 years?? You wanna go after Andy for his coaching skills? DO IT WHEN HE ACTUALLY MAKES A COACHING DECISION!!! Oh & wow...you dropped a reference to his parenting skills. Lemme ask you something - what kind of parent are you? Oh wait - you probably aren't even a parent due to the fact that no woman would ever be seen in public with you. Find a new place to register your complaints you tool...

@retzlaff Rather than trash your comments, I actually do hear you. But I do read this stuff to take my mind off of the real issues you mentioned. Nor am I ignorant of of "real news." It's just nice to take a break from it now and then.

I'm glad they signed Allen, probably more important for him to be in early then Grahm. Reids history with high round D.E.'s is not good and he will miss the first week which will out him in the doghouse. No big deal, wiht this defense couldn;t see us going more then 6-10 anyway

retlaff, it's "know", not "no". And, yes you are too serious, this is sports news and that is why it is in the headlines on the sports page.

retzlaff....you've got some issues, man...maybe consider that for many people sports is an escape from the serious issues in our lives , some of which you raise....if you immerse yourself thinking about that stuff 24/7, you're gonna end up in a padded room....sports, music , art , whatever...is an escape for your mind. If it's not sports for you, find something else that brings you happiness and let's you empty your head of the serious issues in life that we ALL deal with daily. For many of us it's sports, so leave us alone.

More "holier than thou" routine, way too much of that on here, but it is apparently a lot like herpes, just not going to go away.

On an actual sports related note, I think Coleman will end up being as big a piece of our secondary's future as Allen will be. I kind of want to see Coleman push Mikell in the very near future.

How long until the Eagles pre-season injury list begins to grow like every year?
