Eagles pay tribute to Flyers

POSTED: Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 3:04 PM

There is this perception in Philadelphia -- stoked by certain members of the media (cough, talk radio, cough, pandering columnists, cough) -- that the Eagles begrudge the other professional sports teams in the city when they are having varying levels of success.

For years, the Eagles dominated the sporting landscape, unchallenged by the mediocrity of the Phillies, Flyers and Sixers. But then the Phils built a new stadium, started reaching the playoffs and finally brought the championship-starved town a title two years ago with a World Series crown.

Some Eagles haters have used the Phils' success to poke at the Eagles front office, namely owner Jeffrey Lurie and team president Joe Banner. They also felt that the Eagles didn't do enough to recognize the Phils' championship, as if the organization should have paid for the parade down Broad Street or something.

In fact, the Eagles did offer congratulations to the baseball team on their video board outside Lincoln Financial Field and on the screen that stands above I-95. And they also posted a laudatory video on philadelphiaeagles.com. In actuality, the Eagles and Phils have an amiable relationship. Banner and Phils president Dave Montgomery are friends.

Still, some believed that the Phils' increasing popularity threatened the Eagles. Some suggested that the Phils had eclipsed the Eagles as the No. 1 sports team in town. It's a futile, tired argument, so there's no need to rehash it here.

Nevertheless, the Phils' recent accomplishments have given way to an improbable Flyers run during this year's Stanley Cup playoffs. The Flyers reached the finals with Monday night's Eastern conference championship series win over Montreal and are four wins from bringing the Cup back to Philly after a 35-year hiatus.

The Eagles recognized the Flyers' trip to the Finals with a congratulatory posting on their Web site. The page is centered in large font with the words "Let's Go Flyers!" and a Flyers emblem. And beneath that it says, "Congratulations Flyers! Good Luck In The Stanley Cup Finals." It was a nice gesture. Of course, if the Flyers do win the Cup it will only heighten the current Eagles ownership's inability thus far to bring a Super Bowl to Philly and the 50 years since the franchise's last NFL title.

The Sixers will win it all before the Andy & Lurie's 'Gold Standard' squad

I bet the Flyers don't sign free agents fresh off of ACL surgery, just to save a couple bucks...

EBM is absolutely right. Instead, they go and get huge pieces like Chris Pronger, an all world defensemen.

Flyers and Phillies have more heart than the Eagles. Maybe the Eagles players should watch a few games to see how its done !! I am a die hard Eagles fan. Just frustrating to see all our other Philly teams know what to do when the time comes. GO FLYERS ! Win it in 6 !

Kevin Kolb and the Eagles will bring a superbowl to philly. Lets just focus on the Flyers bringing a Stanley Cup to Philly right now and the Eagles bringing home the trophy this year when football season comes around. The Phillies are a very good team but have not been playing well lately. The Sixers need alot of help and hopefully they Draft Evan Turner and he becomes a star.

LMAO. McLane, you're nothing but a hack writer who is obviously in the Eagles' back pocket.

Kevin Kolb and the Eagles will never bring a superbowl to Philly; let's just call it the Michael Vick Karma Curse! Go Flyers!

There is actually no logical or empirical support for the assertion that Kolb will bring a "superbowl to Philly." Of course, I assume FMBNG and JBin PA meant bring a Super Bowl Championship, not just the Super Bowl, that Laurie claims he will seek. But I digress. It is wishful thinking, although I might share it, to state it is fact merely reveals the stupidly of some who post of this site. I won't even call you "fans."

Holmgren and the Flyers went for it all by making a huge trade to bring in Chris Pronger to help right the ship after that horrible playoff loss to Pitts. last season. Something the Eagles and Andy Reid would never do, take the chance, be aggressive and go for it.

"It's a futile, tired argument, so there's no need to rehash it here." C'mon Jeff, didn't you just spend five paragraphs doing exactly that?

It was a nice gesture by the Birds. Why all the hate?

An article about how the Eagles paid tribute to the Flyers and it's about the Phillies and Eagles relationship. Now I understand why I don't know who Jeff Mclane is.
