The Eagles have named Mike Caldwell as the team's linebackers coach and Michael Zordich as secondary/safeties coach, adding two young names who have come up in Andy Reid's system to Juan Castillo's defensive staff.

Caldwell was the team's assistant linebackers coach last season. He has been on the coaching staff since 2008 and interned with the team in 2007. He played 11 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Eagles. He replaces Bill Shuey, whose contract was not renewed.

Zordich was a defensive quality control assistant last season. He interned with the team in 2009. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, including five with the Eagles. He replaces Dick Jauron, who became the Browns' defensive coordinator.

The Eagles brought in veteran Jim Washburn to coach the defensive line. He is the only defensive coach on the staff who has previously led a position group in the NFL.

No, they were learning from JJ himself before he died, Caldwell actually played for JJ.

both these guys are former Eagles. Mike has a lot of heart and like Dawkins was known for his tenacity. I approve his advancement. Caldwell has something to prove to me.

Spent a lot of money on Washburn and Mudd (Good Hires), so you knew eventually they would go cheap somewhere else. So predictable of this Front Office. Lurie, Banner, Reid and Roseman can never be all in to win a Championship. There are always corners to cut and bargains to be had. This enables them year after year of maintaining the Eagles "Gold Standard" bottom line.

No problem with these promotions under normal circumstances but as the article pointed out, we now have 4 defensive coaches and only 1, Washburn, has been responsible for a defensive position.

Yup! They spent money on a few expensive free agent coaches and filled-out the coaching roster with a few 6th round picks.

I love the Mike Zordich move. He coaches anything like he played he will be a good coach. definetely worth giving him a chance. Not that it will change much. but he brings toughness and the D lacked that majorly. I dont think anyone will actually make assante learn how to tackle properly as long as REid is coach. Assante is free to run around with the worst tackling technique I have seen from any DB in the entire league. He runs into guys helmet first with his hands at his sides. Its called HIT, WRAP, AND DRIVE. Hit the ballcarrier, wrap your arms around him, and drive him backwards. WTF Assante does I have no idea but its pretty bad. You wouldnt see Assante pulling that garbage on the steelers or packers D. There is no way Mike Tomlin would tolerate it. Andy Reid, well..he tolerates losing, over eating, drug use, and who knows what else. HE IS NOT GOING TO WIN A SUPERBOWL. EVER. Hes too nice, too dumb, to predictable, too indecisive, and NOT A CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING COACH. NEVER WILL BE. EVER.

Both seem like good moves, some jokers on here gotta find something to complain about no matter what.

Wow the negativity is running ramped. Just how much difference in payroll do you think there is with a rookie linebackers coach and a linebacker coach with experience? FYI, most good linebacking coaches do not leave one team for another, ie "lateral move"

    Get a clue guys

Well, just remember the Birds lost to the SB champions by only 4 points and would have won if not for 2 missed field goals. Maybe the future next year is not so dim after all. Maybe these coach changes will shake things up just enough for them to get over the edge next season. Maybe?

uh NO. Reid lovers have said that for TWELVE YEARS...in a row. guess what. ITS NOT HAPPENEING. NOT NEXT SEASON, NOT 02, 03, 04, 08, OR ANY OTHER YEAR, NOT 2011, 2012, 2013. NEVER. 60-80% passing garbage that Reid throws out there is GARBAGE THAT HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER WIN A SB. EVER. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

charliegarner25 you have a serious problem, 90% of what you post is just pure neagativity. Assante Samuel played under Bellichek, so don't try to suggest that a "good coach" would change him. Your tired BS about run/pass % is pure old fashioned, and though I agree that a good mix of the run and the pass is a good thing, balance does not assure you of anything. To boil it down, every move they made this off season looks good to me. Furthermore, they did an excellent job of drafting last year. If they draft as well, sign a free agent or two, and stay healthy, they have a shot to go all the way. The Packers are not a better football team, and they are the champs, so next year could be our year. By our year I mean true Eagle fans, and that does not include trolls like you, charlie.

lol, you think the packers are not a better football team...I think you OD'd on the kool-aid LONG AGO. packers had the #2 ranked D in the league. eagles was anywhere from 12-22, and 32nd in redzone TD's. uhh, and pass/run is so fundamental to football. if the packers didnt pound it down Andy throat they wouldnt have made it to that game in the first place. throwing it over and over, EVERY game, does not and never will win a championship. cant wait til Reid is fired and all the reid mcnabb lovers can have fun making excuses for them as they FAIL OVER AND OVER.

Why do some people still blame akers for the loss to green bay? 2 missed field goals is 6 points. 1 dropped T.D. pass by green bay before the half and an extra point is 7 points. 1 interception in the end zone, not thrown by akers.....game over!

Whoa Charlie Garner! Zordich played on the worst Eagle defenses of the last 20 years. He was a marginal NFL starter who made the most of what he had, the Mikell of his era. If you think Samuel was the problem with this defense, then it says more about you than it does about him!

I can't say I don't like the moves. You put a former DB in charge of the secondary, you put a LB in charge of the linebacks...They both learned from JJ. Not to knock McDermott but he never saw the game from a player's eyes. I liked McDermott though. Thru all of his faults, he did turn the D into a turnover creating machine. I hope they bring in Seth Joyner as an assistant LB coach. He was a playmaker and can definitely have some positive input.
