Eagles dominate, send a message

LANDOVER, Md. – This was a Mike Tyson-in-his-prime kind of knock out.

After plenty of jawing by both sides before the game, the Eagles opened the real action with a head-snapping, message-sending uppercut. It took 18 seconds.

They then poured it on the Redskins in a record-setting offensive display, using the bright lights of Monday Night Football to serve notice that the Eagles are a dangerous team that must be counted among the NFC’s elite as the season’s second half begins.

There is still a long way to go to the playoffs, but for now the Eagles are 6-3, and have already throttled the only NFC team with a better record, the Falcons. Monday’s 59-28 win pulled the Eagles into a tie with the Giants atop the NFC East. A showdown between the rivals looms Sunday in Philadelphia. The Eagles will roll into that game riding a defense that has steadily improved and an offense that looks downright volcanic.

If Monday’s game had been a fight, the Redskins would have been counted out after the first punch. Instead, with a full 60 minutes required, the Eagles kept delivering haymakers. After Michael Vick hit DeSean Jackson for an 88-yard touchdown on the game’s first play, Vick ran for a score, LeSean McCoy went in, and backup running back Jerome Harrison added a 50-yard score for a 28-0 lead before the first quarter concluded.

Redskins fans shouted their first cheer of the game when the referees announced the end of the period. On the next play, Vick launched a 48-yard rainbow to Jeremy Maclin to pump the lead to 35-0. It wasn’t just the score, but the ease with which the Eagles sprinted by the helpless Redskins. It took the Eagles just over 19 minutes of possession to ring up 45 first half points, setting a team record for most in one half.

By the time the Redskins got off the mat and got to punching back, it was too late. Donovan McNabb came up with some of the big throws that helped earn him a five-year extension reportedly worth up to $88, but the Eagles kept coming, smothering their opponents in a way the young team had failed to do earlier this year.

That the Eagles turned the game into a green-and-white highlight reel on the night McNabb got a lucrative extension, against a division rival that had beaten them earlier in the year, and after enthusiastic pre-game smack talk, surely made the victory that much sweeter for Eagles fans and their front office.

In a re-match against the one defense that had truly stifled the Eagles this year, Marty Morhninweg drew up a clever game plan that bought Vick time to throw, and gave his explosive receivers time to get deep downfield, taking advantage of their speed and the quarterback’s huge arm.

The results: the Eagles gained 592 yards, a team record. Vick threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns on just 20 completions and had a 150.7 passer rating; he ran for 80 yards and two more scores. His passing and rushing touchdown totals tied career highs. Four different Eagles caught touchdown passes. Cornerback Dimitri Patterson, in his second career start, added two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. Harrison, in his first extensive action for the Eagles, ground out 109 yards and one score.

The 87 points by both teams tied an Eagles record.

Both teams came out charged for the prime time game, scuffling, mostly shoving and talking, as the Eagles headed to their locker room following pre-game warm ups.

The Eagles turned talk to action on the game’s first play. Vick faked a hand off right and rolled left. Jackson raced past two defenders. Vick threw the ball some 63 yards in the air, and Jackson pranced backwards for the final 10 yards of an emphatic score, punctuated by a forceful spike.

The Eagles’ 28 first quarter points were the most the team has ever scored in the opening period. Vick’s first play bomb to Jackson was the longest play of either of their careers, and the Eagles lead at the end of 15 minutes was the largest for a road team in NFL history.

There were still 45 minutes left to play, but the game was over nearly as soon as it started. The Redskins absorbed the blow, but everyone in the NFC should get the message.

Vick looked like a combination of McNabb Cunningham and Steve Young in their prime all rolled into one great QB. Last week was Indy last night D.C. Lets see what happens over the next 3 weeks. I love what i see and improvement on the D and consistency will make them SB contenders and that's what we all want. In the words of D Hall it was shocking.

Best Eagles game I've seen in years!!! And how awesome to beat the Skins in their own house. McScrub and his team got VICKtomized last night. With Vick at the helm I actually believe we have a shot at the coveted Superbowl title!!! Go Ealges and Go Vick!!! :)

I am a Philadelphian living in D.C. I can't wait to go to work and rub this into the face of all of my co-workers! What a way to get revenge guys! Glad I was able to witness history as the Skins crowd cleared Fed-Ex in the 3RD QUARTER! "Welcome to the Eagles Home Game" was the common theme. Once again the Philadelphians take over another DC team's stadium. Way to go guys!!!

It's true. Extraordinary performance last night. "Fly Eagles Fly" was never more appropriate. But birds aren't beast of the east 'til they beat the Giants Sunday, and finish strong. Good coaching is now in demand to keep birds from a massive letdown.

iamkingdunlap -- so its moronic to want the leagues best, most dangerous, and most exciting qb to be signed to a long term deal? i think YOU are the moron.

iamkingdunlap, I'm reading your statement "He did a great job last night, I agree, but let's see him sustain that..." and wondering where have you been? Were you out of the country for a couple of months?
He's been sustaining it all year. It started in his relief appearance against Green Bay in September. You remember September, when he was NFL player of the month. Then he got hurt and returned against the Colts and was voted NFL player of the week. Then last night he puts on one of the best performances in NFL history. Somehow you haven't seen him sustain it.

After this MNF display, its time for the Birds to think long-term. Lock Vick up to a 3-4 yer deal, with incentives, and insist that he play more carefully. Injury, appears to be his only weakness at this point. Next, the Eagles should reach out to teams like Minn or SF and see if they need a QB. Teams with strong defense's and great RB's could benefit greatly from a QB like KOLB. I never understood why SF wasnt interested in McNABB. The Eagles should be able to get a 1st round pick for Kolb and they really need DB's and O-Linemen. I really think if the Birds dont make the Superbowl this year, it will be due to the DB's getting smoked by Brees or Manning. Looks like Shawn Andrews is the starting LT for Giants now and i never understood why the Birds decided to cut him this year, when they had basically already paid him the bulk of his contract. They would have had him on the cheap this year, boneheaded move! Hopefully, some guys on the O-Line can get healthy and they can improve their play. I know everyone is riding high after MNF,but its not going to be this easy all year. The secondary and O-Line MUST improve or they wont go far. Good defensive Coordinators WILL figure out a way to SLOW Vick down for the playoffs. The secondary has been terrible most of the year and especially in their losses. Never understand why they didnt try to sign AL Harris, he looked great in the MIAMI-TENN game, physical, downright mean and strong tackling. Their weak secondary could really use that. HObbs is not the answer but Patterson looked good although he did get burned in some coverages. All in all, sky is the limit for Mr. VICK. Truly awesome performance!!

all of your morons saying we should lock Vick up to an extension now should go finish wanking off Steve Young on MNF. He did a great job last night, I agree, but let's see him sustain that for several more games before we talk extension. We are in no hurry. We still have him for the rest of the season, and can franchise tag him at the end of the year, if necessary.

On any given Sunday we're a dangerous team. Super Bowl contender? That's a real stretch. Only the mediocrity of this year's NFL could get us into the final week. Eagles are a fast, young, entertaining team, and when they get it going, the scoreboard will light up like it did last night. But we're perfectly capable of getting beat 35-10 next week.

Sign Vick pronto and send KK to the Vikings or Dolphins, or any other team for whatever they give us. We have too many great young skills players to be wasted (or kill by the opposition) with Kevin's weak passes or slow reaction.

Sorry Vick Haters you all was ridding your boy KK's nutz all spring and summer long... And everyone in the world that knew football was trying to figure how in the heck were the Eagles even thinking about it lol??? It was a no brainer for me and all of the Vick supporters we knew he was very well capible of playing this good... I was saying they should have put his behind in during the Dallas game remember he was the only positive thing we had to show that day last year in the playoffs... I hope you all notice the differences in QB styles with Vick he cater's to the recievers strengths. Not the other way around like when Kolbs at the helm... If the defense can pull it together we'll win it all this year... Looks increasing likely they will do whatever they can to keep Vick lol man if they don't after tonights game then something is really wrong with Jeff and company!!! That will be money well spent and in the bank!!! What was the Falcon's owner Author Blank even thinking of lol what a lame he was and still is for dumping Mike!!!! Long live MV7!!!!

Vick is the man! This is one of the best Eagles Teams ever!! 23 years a seasons ticket holder from 1969 to 1992. Living in Carlsbad, CA now. Vick should get the long term contract, Kevin should be traded for a #1 draft pick. Kevin will be a very good QB but it is unreasonable to expect him to sit around. Mike Kafta will fill the bill as 2nd QB next year. Vick will only get better and better! He is driven to redeem himself. This is not a fluke but a QB who has developed and matured. Sign him now to an extesnion!!!!

Beat the Giants next week and I'm sold on the Eagles being the best team in the NFC. With a win as big as this was, I smell a letdown next week. Vick looked scary good tonite, probably the best he has ever looked. Right now he is the MVP of the league.

Randall Cunningham. Maybe the best Eagles game to watch ever.

If McNabb is worth 50 Million, sign Vick and lock him up for 4 years.
