Eagles sign Mat McBriar, release Chas Henry

POSTED: Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 2:26 PM

The Eagles made a change at punter on Tuesday, signing Mat McBriar to a two-year deal and releasing Chas Henry.

McBriar, a two-time Pro Bowler, spent the preseason with the Eagles but did not beat Henry for the job while recovering from a football injury.

Henry has struggled this season, and special teams coach Bobby April spoke last week about a technical problem in Henry's punts.

Henry has six punts this season with a net average of 38 yards.

The Eagles also signed long snapper Kyle Nelson to practice squad. He's insurance in case Jon Dorenbos cannot play with a high ankle sprain. If that's the case, the Eagles will need to cut a player from active roster. They released Jeremy Ebert from the practice squad.

Wow, after he was almost the only player to actually do his job on Sunday? Fascinating. This fixes all our problems.

These moves will turn the team around for sure. Now, we have to worry about field goal accuracy with a new holder who by his own admission is not good at that task.

Do we really need a punter? Can't we just pass on 4th down?

Field goal accuracy? You do realize that Henery was the most accurate rookie field goal kicker in the history of the game, right?

I thought Henry won the job because McBriar did a bad job holding the ball for field goals? Arggggggg.

What? Henry has 16 punts this season with a 48.3 average. I actually thought he was punting really well. The net isn't his fault. The other guys need to tackle.

The Cleveland game really skews his stats. He had 6 punts for 330 yards in the Browns game for an average of 55 yards. The next 2 games combined 10 punts for 442 yards.

Also hang time is a huge determining factor in the net.

Captain -- I believe he hank was saying that with a new holder there's a chance that Henery's FG accuracy might drop.

He has 16 total punts this season, 14 of them have been returned for an 11.7 average per return. Meaning, he's not getting consistent hang time.

I guess they feel McBriar can do a better job, or at least be a little more consistent. But it's not like Andy Reid has ever coached field position, so I'm perplexed by the move.

Pure and simple a scapegoat move. Andy's giving the allusion of "fixing" the problems!

I thought that they should have kept McBriar out of training camp, but I suppose they thought that he wasn't all the way back from his injury yet. I guess now the think that McBriar at 90% is still better than Henry at 100%.

Best comment was - cant we just pass on 4th down. That says it all.

Dorenbos is the second best magician on the team. Vick is making the football disappear really well.
