Eagles sign G Mathis; Nnamdi arrives

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Eagles signed guard Evan Mathis, a veteran of seven seasons in the NFL, on Sunday.
The 6-foot-5, 302-pound Mathis has played in 58 career games (22 starts) for the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-10), Miami Dolphins (2008), and Carolina Panthers (2005-07).
Mathis could have been brought in to push top draft pick Danny Watkins, who is penciled in as the starting right guard, or maybe to play left guard so that Todd Herremans could move to right tackle. The move may have simply been one to add depth to the offensive line.
As of right now, the Eagles don't have the projected right side of their line practicing. Right tackle Winston Justice is on PUP as his knee recovers from arthroscopic surgery and Watkins is not in camp as negotiations for his first contract drag on.
In other news, Nnamdi Asomugha arrived at Lehigh University last night and walked out onto the fields to a standing ovation from fans. The cornerback was not wearing his uniform, but a gray shirt. He is expected to wear No. 21, although Joselio Hanson was still wearing that number as of this morning.
Because he was signed as a free agent, Asomugha can't practice until Aug. 4. He will be introduced to the media later this morning.
I wonder if this move either means there is a problem signing Watkins or if the Eagles plan to move Herremans to RT phillystrome
Looks like a good move for quality depth hillbillybirdsfan

The Christmas tree is buried in presents and still the kids want more. Maybe Santa will send in a few more gifts kiddies so relax. Can't believe that with this amazing haul of talent there are still a few disgruntled fans posting here. IT AIN'T OVER YET! The Eagles said they had a plan so perhaps the fact that they have a great OL coach means 1] they will still make a move for a RT upgrade or 2] Mudd thinks they will be OK as is. I think he knows better than we do, no?A little patience people, please. It was just a few days ago that people were b*tching about the Eagles' inactivity and laughing at the "plan". Well? Where are all those bozos today? In the same place as the "Nickels" posters, that's where. Just enjoy the ride. AR, Howie and Joe "Megabucks" Banner seem to have it right. tpizza
@phiily mike....Joe Panos does have a history but Watkins will be in soon..This signing may reflect just as much to Herreman's sliding over to right tackle just as much...King Dunlop? bearsfriend
Mathis starts at left guard, Herreman moves to right tackle, solid, smart, quick line, that will get better as year goes on camasbud
This kid Watkins better sign and get in camp. ej610
I think the signing of Mathis is a sign to Watkins' agent! Robi_LA
sign Tatupa now!!!! 3x pro bowler 28yrs old even if he plits reps with Mathews his instincts are awesome. Let's complete this thing. skindome
There is a pay sclae now in place for rookies. He knows how much he's slated to make, the only thing probably holding the deal up is how much of the money will be guaranteed. cremebroulet
Tatupa has had 2 knee surgeries. Get Watkins and Desean done, then just a veteran linebacker cause you need one, and maybe a veteran safety as well for small amount of money, and call it a day...
im a little skeptical of how the Asante situation works out..doesnt look like you'll be able to trade him, so probably keep him, DRC is your nickel this year, and then Asante gets cut after the year most likely. jim715
