Eagles not expected to pursue big-name free agents

POSTED: Tuesday, March 12, 2013, 3:57 PM

Free agency kicks off in about a few minutes and there are some relatively big names on the market for the Eagles to pursue.

But a word of caution to those that hope that Birds general manager Howie Roseman will sign cornerback Sean Smith or safety Dashon Goldson or outside linebacker Paul Kruger -- it's not likely to happen.

The Eagles have a host of holes to fill and are expected to target mid-level free agents in attempt to fill those spots and to avoid a bust contract like the one they handed to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha two years ago.

Case in point: The Eagles released Asomugha this afternoon after two forgetful seasons.

The Eagles have expressed interest in Dolphins tackle Jake Long, according to an NFL source, but landing the four-time Pro Bowler is considered a long shot.

The Eagles have made overtures to the New York Jets about trading for cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to league sources. Whether that means they will be able to bag one of the best defensive players in the NFL remains to be seen.

Roseman would have to give up mutliple drafts picks and would likely have to sign Revis to a contract extension for a transaction to occur.

Free agency begins at 4 p.m., but it will last for several weeks as mid-level veterans visit teams and narrow their choices down. That appears to be where the Eagles are headed.

These scenarios of the eagles building a winner are so ame it makes you sick. I have followed philly sports since the A's were in own and dad used to take me up to Lehigh ave. to watch a ball game. 67 76er's greatest team ever, 75 flyers the most exciting. The eagles I don't know, maybe the 80 team. To many years of Joe Kuharichs, Rich Kotites, etc, etc, . Look at their last 10 first round draft choices, even worse look at the 2nd and 3rd round choices. Mediocrity at best. 50/60 years of nothing but losers, what do pro teams in other cities do that philly does'nt. Other cities come up with a winner every once in awhile, is it philly or just the bad owners and management we get? Somebody have some answers let me know, its to late to abandon ship.

I have been completely underwhelmed by this new staff. We have the third most money under the cap and we are going after other teams back ups. Willing to bet Joe Banner will out smart AND out spend us. I am not saying we have to sign all the top F.A. S but let's get one or two top notch players as we can't expect to fill all our needs thru the draft

Those in managements job is not to avoid free agency, but to select the right players that will benefit the team. They blew it the last few years, and they only have themselves to blame. Thats what Gamble should be here for, to avoid making those same mistakes. There appears to be plenty of talented 26 and 27 year old free agents that you can build a team around combined with a few good drafts to make the team a contender again.

These comments and column are perfect examples of why I cannot stand the Eagles or Eagles fans. Apparently, because they don't/won't get the most high priced over rated free agents they are going to suck. Any sport I have ever known, shows that chemistry and continuity will overcome the most stacked team if that cannot play together as a complete unit. I guess if big dollars and highly touted free agents arent brought in, the team is going to be a bust. Look how well those over priced, Pro Bowlers that were cut in the offseason worked out for them the past few years. Get your heads out of the sand!

No point to sign big name players when this team is years off from competing. The team's QB isn't even on the roster yet. Start signing top tier players next season.

Eaglehaslanded,,,,, That was then and this is now. Spend the type of money that was spent 2 years ago "WISELY" and instantly contend.
Or,, Scared money can make no money.,,, nuff said.

Philly, true but it's like comparing apples to oranges. You have 5 guys on the floor compared to 11 for either offense or defense. Again, you need those 11 guys rowing in the same direction at the same time. It took the Heat a few years to put that all together. Take for example the Flyers before the salary cap, they would bring in an all star roster, but it never paid off for them. You need a good mesh to win championships. You can have the most talented people in the world, but if they can't work as 1, it is going to fail everytime.
