Eagles met with RGIII
Jonathan Tamari
Quarterback Robert Griffin III wowed reporters with his poise, confidence and sense of humor Friday, and then dropped a little surprise: he met with the Eagles Thursday night.
Griffin, expected to be drafted as high as number two overall, was asked about his schedule and volunteered the info, noting that his next meetings are with Cleveland and Kansas City, two teams with considerably larger quarterback needs.
It's a surprise, but I wouldn't read too much into it for the Eagles. Likely they are doing their due diligence so they can be prepared just in case there is some unlikely turn of events that puts Griffin within reach -- maybe an unexpected tumble down draft boards, or a trade offer from a team picking early. The Eagles are here anyway, and it's hard to see what they would lose by taking the time to meet Griffin.
They have three picks in the first two rounds, so they have ammunition to move up, but, again, it would be a surprise if they would try to draft a top tier quarterback. For one thing, Andy Reid needs a big year, so drafting a prospect to sit for a season behind Mike Vick doesn't make much sense when they need someone who can make an immediate impact. (The Eagles have to pay Vick for 2012, so he's not going anywhere).
More importantly, I've long argued that if there is a coaching change approaching soon -- either through Reid's choice or management's -- it doesn't make sense to let Reid pick the next franchise quarterback. Whoever takes over next will have his own vision and want his own man to lead the team, not a leftover from the previous regime. It wouldn't be wise to invest in a young franchise quarterback only to have to change course again in a few years.
So while the Griffin interview perked up my ears when I heard about it, I doubt we'll see him wearing green this year.
ANYDAY now these gadget quarterbacks will take over the NFL. Please stop the experiments and let me know when one of these multi talented "weapon" guys wins the SB. The mold is out there for a winner, see Eli, Payton, Brees, Rodgers, Brady.. etc... itzjake
Sounds like a AR move. Cocky SOB tsump

RGIII, will be better than andrew luck. Mark my words, Well he will probably succeed better in the nfl. I just don't see the big thing with Luck, anyone else? Oh wait, he's the next best thing thats comparable to peyton manning. There is one thing you can't fake and that is speed and accuracy and RGIII has both. Didn't think he was 6'2 though. marks22
As much as Id love to have RGIII as an Eagle, it ain't gonna happen. All teams interview players they're never going to draft, it's all smoke and mirrors. JohnnyH
itzjake agree with you in that running QB's can make for an exciting game to watch, but come January when they are banged up, its the teams with the standard drop pack pocket QB's that make it to the big dance. watsonmr
This is typical Andy Reid trying to outsmart everybody and throw everyone off so they can pick an undersized defense pass rusher with a high motor to join his gold standard team. GET READY TO BE AMAZED NFL! ej610
The Eagles NEVER interview players they end up drafting. ej610
Just once I'd like to see them with an intelligent pocket passing QB. gordon7
I wouldn't assume Reid is leaving after next season. The Eagles should be a pretty good team, and wiil stand a decent chance of making a SB run. p-diddy
Surprised so many of you got a rise out of this news. Well, surprised probably isn't the word I'm looking for. Due diligence man. That's all this is. Cam Newton's year will help RGIII's hype machine. vafan
As much as I would like to see Reid outta here, it is not happening. Fat Andy will be here as long as he likes. chocolatethunder
Knowing how many coaches come and go and never get their hands on a franchise QB, methinks the logic that Reid may be gone soon and therefore the Eagles won't invest in a future star is ludicrous. Any new coaching candidate they might hope to lure to Philadelphia will have many questions. The first "How much you offering?" The second "Who's your QB?" gnarlyscuzz
Howie just wanted RG III's autograph Luriesucks
When it comes to Quarterbacks, Reid and Lurie are racially biased. They most certainly are looking for a way to get RG III, Roseman all but said the other day that taking a QB early over a LB is on the table. Lets Eat
