Eagles met with RGIII

POSTED: Friday, February 24, 2012, 4:03 PM

Quarterback Robert Griffin III wowed reporters with his poise, confidence and sense of humor Friday, and then dropped a little surprise: he met with the Eagles Thursday night.

Griffin, expected to be drafted as high as number two overall, was asked about his schedule and volunteered the info, noting that his next meetings are with Cleveland and Kansas City, two teams with considerably larger quarterback needs.

It's a surprise, but I wouldn't read too much into it for the Eagles. Likely they are doing their due diligence so they can be prepared just in case there is some unlikely turn of events that puts Griffin within reach -- maybe an unexpected tumble down draft boards, or a trade offer from a team picking early. The Eagles are here anyway, and it's hard to see what they would lose by taking the time to meet Griffin.

They have three picks in the first two rounds, so they have ammunition to move up, but, again, it would be a surprise if they would try to draft a top tier quarterback. For one thing, Andy Reid needs a big year, so drafting a prospect to sit for a season behind Mike Vick doesn't make much sense when they need someone who can make an immediate impact. (The Eagles have to pay Vick for 2012, so he's not going anywhere).

More importantly, I've long argued that if there is a coaching change approaching soon -- either through Reid's choice or management's -- it doesn't make sense to let Reid pick the next franchise quarterback. Whoever takes over next will have his own vision and want his own man to lead the team, not a leftover from the previous regime. It wouldn't be wise to invest in a young franchise quarterback only to have to change course again in a few years.

So while the Griffin interview perked up my ears when I heard about it, I doubt we'll see him wearing green this year.

I hope Trent rested up and got smarter, he will be filling in before game #6. as for RGIII being drafted by Andy, that will not happen, first you could not afford the price to move up, and secondily the quarterback guru has identefied an unknown talent from way far, far away East Armpit that we will be spending out 2nd round draft pick on as our quarterback of the future, it worked so well the last time! Time is running out on this regime, I was 10 years old when we won our last championship, one man, one city can not endure this much sustained punishment, Jeffery, get your pointy head out of your nether region, and help us out! One more Super Bowl victory for an NFC team East that does not play in Philadelphia will send me and Philly over the edge! You wonder why we Boo in Philly, 12 Super Bowl rings in the NFC EAST, Phila. does not own one, enough already..

Two thoughts.....One, the defense really needs help.....Two, howie and Joe are salavating at the number of cheap 6th and 7th round picks they can get for all those first round picks.....ah, the sweet smell of money under the cap......good job howie and Joe...

Yeah.. A Jewish guy from Boston and a Mormon from California are racially biased against white quarterbacks when they only drafted ONE black one who happened to be the franchises face for 12 years.

    Yeah you're about bright..

I hope they do draft RG3 if they can.. but I think he is way out of reach in regards to the return the Rams would be looking for. Particularly being number 15 overall. But the Eagles could sweeten the pot because we do have good talent on the roster.

Problem is that we would still need a middle linebacker.
