Eagles make it official: Andy Reid era over

It’s official.

The Andy Reid era is over.

The Eagles announced today on their Web site that Reid, after 14 seasons, was relieved of his job.

The Inquirer and several other media outlets reported on Sunday, shortly after the Eagles ended a 4-12 season with a 42-7 loss to the New York Giants, that Reid was told Friday that he would no longer be the coach as of Monday.

The team made it official this morning. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. at the NovaCare Complex.

“Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” Lurie said. “But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.”

Lurie added: “The search for the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles will begin immediately,” said Lurie.

Reid met with Lurie this morning and was officially told sometime between 8:30 and 9 a.m. that he was being fired. Reid then met with his players as a group around 10 a.m. and told them that he was no longer their coach. He was emotional as were some of the players.

Lurie then addressed the team shortly thereafter. Reid was also given the opportunity to meet with Eagles employees and say goodbye. There was applause as he said his parting words.

Reid was still at the NovaCare Complex as of the early afternoon. He was meeting individually with players, as were Lurie and Howie Roseman, who will remain the Eagles general manager, a team source said.

After Lurie's press conference, Roseman will meet with reporters.
