Eagles draft S Jarrett and CB Marsh
Jonathan Tamari and Jeff McLane
The Eagles drafted Temple safety Jaiquawn Jarrett in the second round, selecting one of the better safeties in a what is considered a weak class, but one who was not expected to be chosen until later in the draft.
They also took a cornerback -- Utah State's Curis Marsh -- in the third round after they moved back five places. The 6-foot-1, 197-pound Marsh ran a 4.46 40-yard dash at the combine. The Eagles swapped third round picks with the Ravens and also recieved a sixth rounder (191st overall) in return for the 85th overall pick.
Jarrett, from Brooklyn, is considered a hard-working, instinctive player, but one who does not have the size or speed of a top-flight NFL player. He started all but six of his college games at Temple and played in every game of his college career.
"A lot of teams like kids that are just natural football players and that’s what coach Reid saw in me," Jarrett said.
He is listed at 6-foot-0, 198 pounds -- around the same size as other Eagles safeties. His best 40-yard dash time was 4.54, not exactly blazing for a defensive back. But he led Temple in combined tackles last season with 74 (41 unassisted, 33 assisted).
"They see something in me that other teams didn't see," Jarrett said.
He described himself as a physical, disciplined player.
"This right here is one of the greatest situations for me," said Jarrett, who has played his college football in Philadelphia and said he was glad to be staying close to home.
Most analysts expected that Jarrett would last into the middle rounds of the draft.
Jarrett will join a young safety group that includes Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman, each drafted last year. His selection may spell bad news for veteran Quintin Mikell, whose contract is up and future in Philadelphia was already cloudy.
"I'm Happy For Jarrett I Love The Temple Players! Do Your Thing!" Mikell wrote on Twitter.
The second round started in unhelpful fashion for the Eagles: two of the top cornerbacks remaining -- Ras-I Dowling and Aaron Williams -- were taken with the first two picks. Then the Bengals drafted quarterback Andy Dalton and the 49ers took quarterback Colin Kaepernick, likely taking two quaraterback-needy teams out of the sweepstakes for Eagles backup Kevin Kolb, whenever trades resume.
While Dalton and Kaepernick might need time to develop, it seems unlikely that the Bengals or 49ers would invest heavily in another quarterback who would serve as a stopgap before they are ready.
Next Jabaal Sheard, one of the top defensive ends remaining, went to Cleveland, taking off another strong prospect at a position where the Eagles need help.
i went to two temple games and everytime on defense u saw this kid making hits and always making a play or involved in it..he plays alot like ronnie lott, has a nice burst to the football, and can read and react..he isnt going to get u many ints, but receivers will hestitate to go over the middle with this kid roaming..u wont see him get run over like nate allen did last year thats for sure..good wrap up tackler..dont knock him until u see him play..he is like trent cole..nonstop motor and never takes plays off. jarret is a upgrade over nate allen and quintin mikels..wait until u see him play and judge for yourself bigjay215
A good pick for the Eagles. Powelton villager
Don't be so quick to condemn this draft, Naysayers. Watkins especially may turn out to be a fantastic pick. The Birds needed to make the o-line a priority. Check out this prescient article written before the pick was made; I'm convinced (as much as anyone can be before there's a career history to track) that pick may prove to be spot on.

They needed a guard, not a tackle, and they got maybe the best projected guard available. Now, a safety with instincts capable of hitting and supporting the run. Perhaps a project, but a talented corner. So far, so good. They have targeted 3 glaring needs for the coming years. ExPhilly77
lol I love Eagles fans, always two seconds from giving up on a season that hasn't started yet. Give the picks a chance and lets see what happens in free agency. TRealEaglesFan
They passed on Aaron Bailey! Reid better take Colin McCarthy and Casy Matthews..Damon Berry would be a great late round pick up. new2vero2
The Eagles have drafted just the way you would want them to... as long as your a Cowgurlz Vigiants or Deadskins fan. Shawnadelphia
Watkins was a decent pick and I like the idea of Jarret and Allen at safety. But Marsh is hit and miss in coverage. Still need a veteran corner. MrMiles1
In Bizarro World, where up is down and out is in, Andy's scheme of drafting lower-round guys early all makes sense. NM Eagle fan
you guys slay me. The collective numbnut-edness nevers shines as brightly as it does on draft night. Every year it's the same thing boo-freaking-hoo and then they go on to a successful season. Don't you guys ever get tired of it? figgypop
Hey, look at all the ups we have. McDermott is gone, the defense can't help but be much better this year, the offensive line will improve, and I am as certain as I am handsome that Vick is studying blitz packages. Things are going to be just fine. The problem lies with the lockout and revenue sharing issues. WantToKnow
Trust Andy and Howie. They'll fill all the seats, have thousands waiting for season tickets, get into the playoffs, keep our hopes alive, sell a lot of merchandise, and then lose. It's a great success for making money. Forget the Super Bowl. It ain't happening with this team of businessmen in place. Your time. BigMike100
Iggles are doing the best they can under these uncertain circumstances. They got one potential starter in Round One. These two latest picks are potential upgrades. Meanwhile, by swapping picks they get additional selections in later rounds. Their record for picking occasional gems in rounds 4 & beyond is pretty good. It's a wise strategy. rad205

Some great bench players. I like the Eagles draft. First a Fireman, next a Temple boy, and third A guy from Utah State. At least the Giants selected three starters who will help them win their 4th Super Bowl....Unlike the loser Eagles who have ZERO! MRD
the trend this year seems to be unknown players with team first attitude. of course, what the hell else are you going to get when you are always picking at the tail end of the 1st round. confound all these winning seasons and playoff appearances! why couldn't WE get Cam Newton with the first pick overall? Guess we're stuck with Vick and Kolb again...you just know teams like Carolina and Tennessee are just laughing at us...sigh... hmmmmm- Billy McMullen, Tony Hunt, Matt Ware, Ryan Moats, Bryan Smith, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and now Curtis Marsh. If we are going to throw away our 3rd round picks, why not package it and move up in the draft?????
Jarrett will contribute, and possibly be a starter in the near future. The kid has natural ability, period. II Greek II Logic II
the draft record indicate that andy is mentally ill.

I have totally given up. I don't see why we even take part in the draft. Why don't we just take who ever is left over when the other teams are done. JimSeitz- You cannot judge a player by what you see on youz tube videos, of course they are highlights, kind of like watching Kyle Kendrick pitch a 1-2-3 inning and concluding that he's a top flight starter. If he's an over achiever and not all that fast, wait til he hits the NFL, where the speed and strength of the average player is way way more than the teams Temple plays. Doubt Q feels threatened. Still always hoping Temple gets more press and credit, so hope the kid turns out to be a special teams barracuda. Eephus
McLane, you make more wrong interpretations of what things mean than any sportswriter I have ever read, e.g. "While Dalton and Kaepernick might need time to develop, it seems unlikely that the Bengals or 49ers would invest heavily in another quarterback who would serve as a stopgap before they are ready." Neither of those hope/luck picks is near ready to play now OR is a sure bet for the future, thus neither would prevent a team from wanting a proven starter like Kolb to play now and in the future. If one of those guys develops, great, if not, they actually have a QB to backup. I think you need more time to develop.

So we lost no players, have vick for an entire year, got a much needed guard and still have free agency but yet everyone crying.... Quick question, who won the nfc east? fman727- I'm not crying but there are legit questions about these picks, but there are questions about almost all the picks only time will tell. Quick question who won the Super Bowl?
allrightknight
I'm amazed at New England. They continue to trade down and stockpile picks for next year. As usual, they now have extra 1st and 2nd round picks for next year while selecting solid players this year. The Eagles should learn from them. farley
3rd round follies continue...
The Birds seem to reserve this spot for a player who has some tools but is either too raw or really over matched when finally faced with NFL level competition.
Tony Hunt. Bryan Smith. Daniel Te'o Nesheim. And now we can probably add Curtis Marsh to that sorry list.
And yes, I would be delighted to be proven wrong about Marsh. But their 3rd round track record is not at all encouraging... CarpGuy

Notice how Reid went out of his way to say, repeatedly, that their first pick was all Howie Roseman's pick. If the Baylor kid doesn't work out, Reid can always say the GM wanted this guy, not me. mike l
A 26-year-old o-lineman and players they could have gotten later? Is this going to go down as one of the worst drafts in Eagles history? C'mon Andy. WTF? Right now the Eagles are #3 in town and the Sixers are closing fast. jp8899
WOW...What great picks for the Eagles. All Bench players for a few years! The Giants get WR Jerrel Jernigan. Watch out DeSean Jackson. The Giants have a good returner who likes to put up high stats. Lets see what you Got Jackson! MRD- That 3rd round pick was a complete joke. Why do we always throw away our 3rd round picks?
Whine, whine, whine all you so called experts on the draft. The kid from Temple will surprise all of you as will Watkins. slade1955
AR has once again done an effective job with the draft...johnnyu john ullman
Why am I scared that Reid plans to start Marsh this year......Please god don't be yourself and think you got a steal....Who needs nnamdi, Peterson, or a proven corner, we just got a steal in Marsh?!?! flyfightinbullies
I'm consistently amazed by the casual fan who thinks they know about the draft than the professionals. Give them some credit. At least the picks this year fill the apparent needs. twc
I think the people on this board that are ripping JJ obviously never saw him play. I've watched this kid religiously at Temple and he's everything that Philly sports fans claim to love in an athlete. He's been an over achiever his entire life and a natural born leader. He's not the fastest kid but he has a nose for the ball and is a ferocious hitter. Go back and watch his tube videos and read his story and it will be very obvious why the eagles drafted him. Frank Stephens III
What a team. Losers!!! shawnmac
once again the idiots comment. are you not paying attention to life? all the mock drafts were dead...DEAD WRONG!!! Get out of your mother's basement and stop masterbating and get a job and be a productive member of life JESUS tremo12
Jarret will be a positive factor on this team. I'm guessing he'll be a monster special teams player and will be an upside surprise to many Eagles fans. xxx
Wow....Another bench player! Don't the Eagles have Mikell. A bunch of moron management who don't know how to draft. A Temple boy just so he he can stay home with Mommy and Daddy! Hope he has fun on the bench with Fire boy! MRD
andy understand that what matter most to the philly freaks is that he draft a local guy. its a great story.

This is a bad joke. Andy shows absolute contempt for defense. He drafts small guys who NOBODY else has on their boards going that early and then gives them a coach who hasn't coached any defense at the professional or college level on defense!!!! yourdaddy!
I suggest everyone watch the clip that JJR provided. The kid may not have the name of a Casey Matthews, but this kid can play. Let's not forget Nate Allen got a season ending injury at the END of the season. My guess is the Eagles are moving on from Mikell and know that the 2 other safeties we have won't be good enough. They both showed flashes at the end of the season, but Andy knows he needs better tackling out of that position. papabear702
Interesting that Eagles didn't have that info about his probable draft round status. Can't believe how stupid this team is. Charon
Very odd to me that there have been no picks traded up or down by Andy. Sorta hoping birds would get at least an almost "sure thing" w/ picks #1 or #2. Not sure there's ever a "block-buster" trade in the third round. I hope there's a method to this madness. wordsword
why didnt andy move up to get this guy?
now we gonna win the big one.
I know it. I can feel it.

@JJR1117, I can't lie, my first thought after hearing the pick was "WHO?!?". But after watching that YouTube video, I'm definately sold. Not many highlights of him snatching any passes up, but definately a rock solid pick. Kid flat out hits. I definately like the direction Andy Reid is going in. Grabbing up a lot of talented, team first guys with some real life mean-streaks. I'm ready for them to ship off Kolb now for Johnathan Joseph and get this season under way. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!! 2011 is OUR year!!! papabear702
Wtf fat boy & the accountants. This guy was rated as a 3rd or 4th round pick. Another reach Ted Mosby
Sorry this was a bad pick. Safety just wasn't that big of a need. they should have been looking Oline, corner, or line backer.
They better take either Greg Jones or Casey Mathews in the next round. I really am getting tired of this were smarter than everyone else so we'll take players who nobody has ever heard of.
You think they would have learned, when they take big names .... Maclin, Jackson, McCoy they turn out to be superstars. andyreidisfat
AS LONG AS ANDY HAS CONTROL...we all know the results---its going to be competitive BUT not a Championship... carmen2
Is Nate not recovering well? I do like what I have read about Jaiquawn's character and commitment to the profession. I think this will work out better than it looks right now. MrHoosier2U
He didn't run a 4.3 40 but the kid can hit and he works his tail off.
Take a look for yourself:

Haha. "a player who was not expected to be chosen until later in the draft". Andy will show everyone once again that he's just different...and much more clever!!! Why wait and take a guy in the 3rd or 4th round when you can spend your 2nd rounder on him. Also, he's slow and undersized??? Perfect. Take that Steelers and Patriots!! You keep getting rings and we'll just keep outsmarting everyone. Sewellmatt
Eagles finally draft someone local. I have been commenting on the boards that they often miss out on NFL talent that comes from the surrounding area. And usually a Temple player makes the NFL every year. watsonmr- THey picked Westbrook about 2 or 3 rounds before any other team would have. They have not totally missed out on local talent.

Eagles draft management sounds like their clock management and play calling. Andy must've been hanging at the Linc on Saturday's watching Temple games. burholme
Andy will keep the Eagles competitive but a Super Bowl.......Forget it! fanup
