EAGLES SIGN ECKEL

POSTED: Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 4:39 PM

The latest twist in the Eagles' fullback saga took place this afternoon as the Eagles signed Philadelphia native and former Naval Academy star Kyle Eckel.

In order to make room for Eckel, the Eagles released safety J.R. Reed.

Eckel, who attended Episcopal Academy, spent all of last season with the New England Patriots. He was signed from the Patriots' practice squad Oct. 1 and participated in the team's final 12 games and two of the team's three playoff games. Eckel scored two touchdowns and gained 90 yards on 33 carries.

The 5-foot-11, 237-pound fullback originally signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2005, but was released at the end of training camp. He signed with the Miami Dolphins, but landed on the reserve/military list.

At Navy, Eckel became the school's third player to have two 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

This guy is so good, he is not playing anywhere, so to make room for him we release a guy from a position that is one of our weakest. They are just grasping at straws and only straws that don't cost anything.

This means AR is either a genius or an idiot. After watching him handle personnel for all these years, which is more likely?

It all started with Duce Staley. Eat your value or get out. This team will not spend the bucks and I dont expect anymore out of tightwad Lurie. I have learned how to watch what

I think we are jumping the gun here. For the first time this year, the Eagles will be at full strength. I agreed at first they should have gone after Roy Williams, but when you look at what he has accomplished this year, it isn't much. We have Curtis and Brown coming back this week, you can put Jackson/Baskett in the slot, Westbrook in the backfield being backed up by Buckhalter... that is very promising. I agree AR has made some very questionable decisions in the past that had me scratching my head. But in the end, they were pretty good decisions. The key to their success for the remainder of the year is NOT TO FORGET ABOUT BASKETT AND JACKSON!! If they are kept in the rotation, they could be very lethal. With ten games remaining, the Eagles will win at least 8 of them.

So what's the official elapsed time on how long Joe "Engleberg" Klecko was our starting fullback between the time Hunt was released and Navy Boy was signed?
