Don't expect Kolb trade

POSTED: Thursday, January 13, 2011, 12:33 PM

As entertaining as it may be to speculate about how much Kevin Kolb could fetch in a trade, and as much as the Eagles backup quarterback may want to start for another team, it is an unlikely scenario considering the NFL’s looming work stoppage.

The backup quarterback will not be traded – that is, if Andy Reid and Eagles brain trust even wants to deal Kolb -- unless there is a new collective bargaining agreement in place by the draft.

And why is that?

For one, Kolb – or any player, for that matter – can’t be traded until the start of the new league year on March 4. And technically, the 2011-12 calendar year won’t flip unless the owners and the players can agree on a new CBA.

If there is no deal, the owners are expected to lock out the players. And a new deal being in place by then – based on the current negotiating climate – is about as likely to happen as the Eagles winning next month’s Super Bowl.

The season hasn’t even ended and both sides are already dialing up the rhetoric. The constant back and forth prompted Eagles tight end Brent Celek to tweet the following this morning: “Why do the players union and the NFL continue to banter back and forth through the media? #getaroom”

So if an agreement isn’t struck by the stroke of midnight on March 4, then how long will a lockout last? There is no sure answer, but all signs indicate that it will drag on at least for several months. And that means, for almost all intents and purposes, that business will be put on hold. There will be no free agency, no minicamps and definitely no trades. (Sorry, Kevin)

The draft will continue on, however, although neither active nor drafted players can be traded. And if the Eagles are looking for 2011 draft picks in return for Kolb – and that would clearly be their preference – there would be no point in trading the 26-year-old unless the work stoppage ended before the draft.

Otherwise, what would be the point in trading Kolb even if the labor impasse ended the day after the draft? All the Eagles would be able to get in return were 2012 draft picks, and that would essentially be useless. They could trade Kolb for other players, but player-for-player trades are rare in the NFL, especially ones involving quarterbacks.

There are several other reasons why Kolb is likely back with the Eagles next season – Michael Vick’s durability and his low salary to name just two. Labor strife and how it will affect the business of the NFL is just one more.

So pay attention to three dates if you want to get a handle on how the Eagles will attack their quarterback situation:

-- A yet-to-be-determined late February date when the Eagles must decide if they plan on using their franchise tag to retain the rights to Vick, whose contract expires, for 2011.

-- March 4, when a new CBA must be agreed upon to avoid a likely lockout.

-- April 28, the first day of the NFL draft and when a new CBA would have to be in place if the Eagles were to want to trade Kolb.

You are right about that Kolb is still shell shock from that play and game wolf4 is a troll he is not a fan so nobody pays these tree huggers any attention. The past is the past Wolf is a ex-con or maybe stll a con that did not get a second chance, Tapes are out on Kolb and teams and fans know he is a dink and dump qb who throws the long ball to short and will get the receivers killed, what happen to the quick release. accuracy and as far as durabilty he was hurt 1st game and look like a deer in headlights in all his games after that Kafika looks promising and has probably learned more that Kolb and understands the system. I dont understand why people think Kolb has not gotten enough time to show what he has please Vick did not even practice with the firt team in training camp did not get a lot of reps and he came in with less than a year in and showed what he has and he will only get better once he is in training camp with starting o line (please fix ) and more reps. You can cry kolb all you want he is a back up and no more besides he owes the eageles for standing on the sideline making 11 million dollars for holding a clip board and he is crying. Send his ungrateful but to Buffalo and let him see how it fees to play with no o-line he will wish he was in philly. E.A.G.L.E.S.

Wow, how surprising you were the first to post here. 1)KK lasted 10 minutes, 2)kk sacked six times against Dallas, 3)KK 3 in one game, Vick 7 all year. Yeah get rid of the fast, elusive QB and bring in old lead foot. hahahahaha, stupidity born of desperation. It ain't workin' wiff. Tick...Tick...Tick...

If they go to an 18 game schedule, teams are going to highly covet a capable backup quarterback.

wolf 4 -- i guess you rather see kolb as a backup? because if vick is on this team, kolb isnt getting any playing time, idiot. since you are so in love with him, wouldnt you want to at least see him play. get a clue, moron. how is vick injury prone and kolb isnt when kolb got hurt the 1st game of the year? you have no football knowledge what so ever.

I also read on PFT that teams might be hesitant to resign their own free agents before a CBA in place. These contracts usually involve signing bonuses and owners want to put the financial screws on in every way possible to make the players cave. But then this could be viewed as collusion and grounds for lawsuits if not a single free agent is resigned by his original team during the period before the lockout occurs.

There's plenty of money to go around for the teams and the players. Just come to an agreement already.

I don't think it's smart to trade Kolb at all, even if there is a CBA. Lets face the facts, even if Vick is back (remember no contract as of today) he has only played a full season once in his career. Stats show that most likely Kevin Kolb will end up being the starter for 4-6 games a year, just because of injuries. Does anyone really feel comfortable with Mike Kafka running the team?
I ONLY deal Kolb if a team comes with a huge package of draft picks...

kolb played 2 games in 2009 and was hurt in the first game of 2010 how is he more durable please, i dont know what the buzz is over him. He is a back up qb and that is all and just like in 2010 nobody want to give Eagles their draft picks for Kolb they will not give up any 2011 unless it is Buffalo.
