DeSean: I'll talk "closer to the regular season"

POSTED: Monday, August 9, 2010, 4:40 PM

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- DeSean Jackson briefly broke his vow of silence to reveal when he would permanently break his no-talking stance this training camp.

"I'll talk with y'all closer to the regular season," Jackson said as he got into his black, four-door Porsche Monday following afternoon practice. "Nothing against you guys."

The Eagles star wide receiver hasn't answered questions from reporters since he arrived at camp less than two weeks ago. He has refused most requests with a simple shake of the head. Eagles coach Andy Reid said recently that Jackson wasn't talking because he was focused on football and didn't want to have to answer questions about his contract situation.

Asked if that was the case, Jackson responded, "That's what I got an agent for."

Told by a reporter that his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, never returns calls, Jackson laughed.

A message left with Rosenhaus, by the way, was not immediately returned.

Jackson is in the third-year of the four-year, $3.058 million contract he signed as a rookie. During the off-season he admitted several times that he was dissastified with his deal. For the most part, however, he has not made waves.

Jackson arrived early for camp because he and cornerback Asante Samuel had to complete the off-season conditioning test they missed when they skipped the last week of spring workouts. Jackson strained his lower back on the first day of full pads hitting. He sat out for six days but returned Friday and has looked his old speedy self since then.

"I'm working hard," Jackson said. "I'm just trying to win a Super Bowl -- nothing else."

Who cares if he doesn't talk. He is not going to have anything important to say anyway.

It'as almost like they want him to say something stupid. He is acting quite prfessional about all this, no holdout or whining. I say leave him be and he will talk when he is ready. If the eagles try and low ball him they deserve to lose him.

Anyone that knows football would realize Djax is going to be doubled no matter who we play..he will not have a great year this year...someone else in that receiving corps will benefeit from his double coverage..

Why does everyone think Eagles hands are tied because of the CBA situation. That is what Birds brass wants you to think. They can give him $5 million bonus this year then redo the contract next year. Easy and everyone is happy. Oh its Banner and Eagles brass calling the shots. I think he will get something like this or he will not be playing, and I do not blame him. He makes a lot of extra dough for Jeff & Co., give DJax his share. GoBirds!

Next year the Eagles will make him the highest paid receiver in the game and he'll be worth every penny of it.

The kid has outplayed his contract. He deserves a raise and he is not causing a ruckus. The career of a pro football player isn't that long you gotta make your money when you can. Before I get the "they signed a contract" reply think of this, NFL contracts are broken by the teams all the time. If a guy outplays his contract then he should be able to have it reworked. The opposite is also true if a player underplays his contract the team should be able to rework it. Only way to make it fair is to pay rookies according to a round pay scale, whether 1st pick or 32nd everyone in the first round gets paid the same say $4mil 3/yr deals with a rework after the 2nd year. That way the players earn their pay.

Everyone always complains when guys open their mouths and we try and say how these guys need to concentrate on the game at hand, yet when they choose not to talk and try to focus on preparing for the season, people still complain. Hate to say it, but typical philly fans that want it both ways. We should be happy that at least for now he's staying quiet and trying to work on the season. Let's also not forget that we're all sitting in our respective jobs complaining about things that 99% of us will never be able to even come close to doing. Yes, it is our money that pay these guys so we are definitely owed a good product in return, no doubt, but I'm always amazed at how many people seem to scream and curse as if Eagles football is the only thing in their lives. I love watching the Eagles and definitely get a bit upset here and there, but let's not forget a little perspective people. It's a great distraction from our real lives, but again, it's simply a distraction, not a way of life. And for those who think I'm not a "true fan", maybe you should consider the fact that I have other interests in my life that, when it's all said and done, are more important than a game. Go birds, I'll be rooting all season long!

I applaud him. He is underpaid in a game where your career can end in an instant. So he's being paid less than he's worth and if he rips his knee up tomorrow, he won't even get the 4th year on his contract. The average fan cannot comprehend this because to them $750K is still good money. But it can all end tomorrow. I also don't blame the Eagles. He is a rail thin player who you don't want to guarantee big money to unless you have to and who will fall off quickly if he loses some of his speed. Both sides are right here. Let's just hope he has another great year and the Eagles redo the 4th year and throw him some guaranteed $$$ in partial compensation for what he did for this team in 2008-2010.

One big hit and DJ is done for the season. Kolb will be out by the fourth regular season game because he will crumble under big defensive backs storming down the middle right at him and Vick will take over. Like the bad old times, we will be no better than 8 and 8.

???Why all the hate for DeSean??? He's done nothing but produce since he's been drafted. He's done more than enough to warrant a new contract, but isn't being a loud-mouth about it as TO and countless other divas have been. What's to hate about the guy? You expect the guy to be a 'professional' and to blabber away for the fans, and then say he has no right to negotiate a contract. Don't you realize how dumb you sound?

I hope all the Iggles fans out there understand that with the emergence of Riley Cooper, and with all the youth, speed and talent we already had, this might be the best group of offensive players ever in Iggles history. Maclin and Jackson w/ Avant make trouble on the outside. McCoy and Bell can run the rock + catch the rock. Celek is a top tier TE and Weaver as our big back that can run as well. If Kolb can be accurate and allow for runs after catches, we can light the league on fire. We play in a tough division, but it should be a real fun year. I can't wait!!!

i like DJax staying quiet. Theres zero upside and everyone knows the CBA situation makes it impossible to pay the man. Continuing to bring it up is just stupid.

This guy is a T.O. MINI-ME. As Harry Kalas would say, GET HIM OUTTA HERE. I knew he was a FREAK-SHOW as soon as I heard he hired Rosenhaus as his agent. He does not FIT-IN with this franchise or city. This is why the Birds drafted Maclin last year. I would trade him now to the Jets, Raiders or Patriots for an OL and draft pick. Besides, he is undersized and one big hit from being a former budding superstar.

Eagle organization asked Jackson to keep his mouth shut about the contract and not cause any trouble and they will give him a financial payout like they did for McNabb, they also replaced McNabb's picture on the stadium (on I95) with the new face of the organization...a giant picture of Jackson

He is good! I think everyone knows this. By the sound of his comment it seems to me like he may try to hold the Eagles hostage for a new contract right before the season starts.

wise move DJ. And no, the eagles should not rush to fork over big money to a man (165 lb at best no matter how talented) who is just one solid hit away from missing major time due to concussion or who hasn't demonstrated he can consistently break free from tight physical coverage.

DeSean Jackson will have another monster year and get a monster deal when there is a new CBA deal in place after the season. Hopefully, the eagles will pay him like a top 5 wide receiver because desean is a beast.

ej610, do you really think that any of the reporters would respect his wish to not talk contract? Seriously, every nat'l reporter will ask him the same thing, philly reporters will too (hence, they are still asking him questions every day even though they know he's not talking to them)...and frankly, you sound like the big-headed one thinking Djax owes you daily comments to the media...is he really going to say anything new each day? All any of us should be happy with is no hold out and td's come sept!

@ej610... I don't think he's being big-headed or arrogant, he simply knows that the only questions the media want to ask him are about his contract in their unending attempt to stir up a controversy. So why even bother ?

What does keeping silent to reporters and fans have to do with his contract? He can just say, I won't answer questions about my contract. Instead, he has to be big-headed and arrogant and take his frustrations out on us fans. WE SUPPORT HIM and a new contract! Why is he treated us like this, we have nothing to do with his contract?

Seriously, I hope he never talks to the media - same goes for everyone else on the team. Nothing good ever comes of talking to the sports writers in this town. Doesn't matter what you say, they'll find a way of making it sound bad.

Good for him. The media always needs some sort of drama. I guess manufacturing stories is easier then doing research.

I still am shocked that the media and most internet marks will try with all their might to make Desean look like a problem or another T.O. I just wish that more professional athleats would just shut up and work hard, just like D-Jax.
